To be honest, I think most of the Israelis know exactly what he did, and their praise comes exactly for that reason.

I still don't see how none of it would "click" as wrong to people.
Brainwashing like this scares me

Most people are content to believe what you tell them from an official source, and rarely do they try to question it as being anything other than the truth.
That's proportional also to the level of knowledge and world awareness that they have. I could tell somebody from the sticks that the Eiffel Tower was a famous monument from Germany rather than France, and they'd probably believe it, having no other source to check. And if you drum it in often enough, they'd believe the lie for the truth. This is a simplistic example but the best I can offer for now.
If you tried the same thing on somebody in an urban setting with limited knowledge about the world, it wouldn't work so easily because there are sources of knowledge more easily available here if they bother to look - books, the TV, internet, newspapers, and so forth. If it does work (and believe me, it can be distressingly common even among the educated) it often takes root even firmer than in the case of the guy from the sticks.

Well I've been to Israel a couple of times and when I talked to the people there, they said that they hate Palestinians and Arabs, I know for fact that not everyone there is like that but the majority is.
After the shit that happened with Osama bin laden and hamas, everyone there became super-intolerant to anything that could remotely suggest that they're arabic/muslim.
It's just this big cycle of hatred.
Actually to be more precise they didn't even refer to them as Palestinians, they just called them Arabs/Sudans
As long as both sides are taught to hate each other, this will never end.
