I had a feeling this had been done before.
"Brought bang up to date" Ahh, "updated" classics! Because how else could you improve on Karate Kid, Annie, or Ghostbusters?
make everyone black
why create new and interesting characters or stories when you can just make genderswaps? honestly there's no problem here but dumb changes like the fairies being the women's institute and shit like that is just stupid.
It's probably because of a British thing but the idea of "The Wise Women of the WI" being played tongue in cheek and for laughs is actually appealing to me. Heck if this whole situation is just played for laughs it actually sounds jolly amusing, panto and theatre has had a LONG history of genders-swapping, the head of the witches coven is traditionally played by a man in drag. Heck drag queens starting out being played for laughs in theatre, on tv etc... probably helped make the public image of said people a little more approachable. Perhaps we should approach social issues with humour to "break the ice" so to speak, and once it's fine to crack a harmless joke about them it's easier to talk seriously about them. Take the BBC SitCom "Citizen Kharn" which is about a Muslim man and his Muslim family doing Muslim things, it's hit and miss as fuck but the humour, while being stereotypical, is also utterly innocent, there's no malice in it whatsoever and that's a GOOD thing. It should be OK to crack jokes about people, normal people crack jokes about normal people, if ya put some social group on an untouchable pedestal they become isolated from everyone else breeding resentment on both sides. I say we need more gender-swapping humour, and more transgender humour and more everything humour, until we can laugh at things casually how is anyone ever going to accept them?
I'd argue that having well written characters would do better for women rather than simply having characters be female.
Shhhh it's 2015
I'd love to see them do Beauty and the Beast in the same manner.
And you know that they'd never do it because it'd put a woman in a beastly, "negative" role.

I mean, wouldn't a good progressive female character not be a clone of another one? It kind of just makes it not as special because of that.

Sure, "looking progressive" might play a small part in the decision, but there's also a pretty high chance they are just doing to see where it goes, if it works and how it could be improved in the future. You don't need to create brand spanking new characters to mess with things like gender norms and stereotypes (and fuck, if they did that here you'd all be complaining about shoehorning in characters). They wanted to take something well know, and change it a bit. Who gives a fuck?

Not sure I see the problem. Sleeping Beauty is public domain, anyone should be allowed to change anything they want about it for any purpose. If someone wants to make a gender swap version, let them.
I fucking hate this year.
And you know that they'd never do it because it'd put a woman in a beastly, "negative" role.
Or Gaston, if they picked Disney's version of the story. But that'd be the fun part of it. You rarely see any amazing female antagonists in these kind of stories.
It's a goddamn story why do you people care so much? How does this negatively effect anyone? What's wrong with not wanting to reinforce gender stereotypes on kids? I'd argue this does a better job of not reinforcing gender stereotypes because it takes a tale already ingrained in our culture and reverses the roles, familiarity helps. Seriously, this reactionary approach to absolutely nothing is shocking. I can't believe this is an actual problem to you people.
you act like disney has never done 'interesting' female villains
Thanks for putting words into my mouth I never said. I said they were rare, not non-existent.

Well written females > Characters simply being female is good enough.

Welcome to the world of the oversensitives....now to work out how to get the fuck off this planet.
I don't want to live in a politically correct world anymore. [editline]1st December 2015[/editline] Insufferable cunts, the lot of them

I wanna see a gender swapped Beauty and the Beast.
I don't want to live in a politically correct world anymore. [editline]1st December 2015[/editline] Insufferable cunts, the lot of them
never thought i'd see a world where people are this triggered by some small happenings in a mid-level play production half way across the world. but here we are.
its fucking sleeping beauty
Low expectations doesn't mean it has to be fucking terrible.
never thought i'd see a world where people are this triggered by some small happenings in a mid-level play production half way across the world. but here we are.
Slow your roll, bud... triggered is the wrong word, more like annoyed.
Slow your roll, bud... triggered is the wrong word, more like annoyed.
I'm just saying the people in this thread seem more offended and over sensitive than any of the purported ravagers of modern theater
I'm just saying the people in this thread seem more offended and over sensitive than any of the purported ravagers of modern theater
More like, we, the sane and well-adjusted of the world don't crumble to their feet the moment we don't pander to their inane insecurities, and speak our minds about it. We're not offended or over-sensitive, it's contempt.

Oh, right, because you disagree with them, and it offends you. Gender-swapping has been a thing in theatre for centuries. This is just elfbarf yet again making a thread that panders to "oh no our society is crumbling because people are recognizing gender as something other than strict 1940s social roles!" This has nothing to do with insecurities. It's just saying "hey, look, the play is pretty much the same when you change the genders, maybe they're not so dissimilar." That's it. If you feel contempt because a single stage across the Atlantic ocean wants to have some fun by adding a twist to a classic story, you're a sad, sad, sorry person and you need to re-prioritize what you're focusing your anger on.

Are we, or this forum, just seeking out headlines and anti-sentiment and just chucking it in a bucket labeled "Tumblr-Feminist Hogwash" like some kind of masochistic confirmation bias? Is there going to be a point where an event or a headline involving some sort of gender subversion or at the very least innovation ( atleast at a level of real human beings) isn't met with the thought of "I wouldn't consider to do this, so they must be the mal-adjusted ones." If this play ends up to be a feminist cull, and all the seats are actually lined with dick-guillotines finely tuned to make the good men of audience manhood-less, maybe this reactionary outrage might've had some sort of purpose but for now it just seems like a goofy waste of energy. Maybe bristoltheaterreview dot com will expose the truth that all the play really was was the collective works of Margaret Sanger read aloud to a captive audience. Geez louise look what I've gotten into Edit; in other words, what I meant was
If you feel contempt because a single stage across the Atlantic ocean wants to have some fun by adding a twist to a classic story, you're a sad, sad, sorry person and you need to re-prioritize what you're focusing your anger on.
You're confusing me for someone who gives *too much* of a fuck over all this. Just voiced my opinion and I think this whole thing is bullshit, that's it. But by all means, go ahead and retell Macbeth by making Macbeth a trans pseudo-panto-bi-judo-sugoi-kawaiisexual, if that's what you're into. Just know that I am of the opinion that I'd consider it retarded. [editline]2nd December 2015[/editline] *Jazz hands*
no hes literally telling you to calm down you old man and stop worrying so much about what some people are doing for a dumb stage play
No man he's just trying to let people know he doesn't care. What good would the internet be if you couldn't just call people insufferable cunts without being mistaken for having commitment.
It'll be the story of a closet furry who finds out his girlfriend is a werewolf, they yiff before Gaston does them in fire.
That exists and has won multiple prestigious awards also internationally, minus the part after the comma :v:
It's a pretty big spoiler for [sp]Wolf Children though[/sp].
[editline]edit[/editline] Made the post quote-safe.
