For all we know he will be brushing this off and bragging to his gangster friends about how he popped two people, of course the story would be revised to fit his tough guy act. Or he could feel terrible about it and regret it for the rest of his life.

As far as I'm concerned David's response is what actually matters. If he decides to play it off like he's a badass or like he isn't at fault for their deaths is when he really deserves punishment. The kid, as "hoodratty" or "wankster", is still human and probably feels a crap load of remorse. He deserves time, yes, for being an irresponsable teenager. He's probably sitting in jeuvenile hall, with his face in his hands crying his ass off.

While it was an idiotic thing nobody wants or expects to hit and kill two people. It was an accident and as I said it was an idiotic thing to do but honestly you've got to move on. David is still alive, probably fucked up after an event like this and you gotta be supportive toward him. Telling him what a stupid prick he is isn't going to help him learn from this and become a better, more careful person, it's only going to bring out his defensive side because that's all he can do. I can say for sure that he's feeling awful after this event and he's going to have to find a way to cope with it, and that is either by staying human and feeling sorry about what happened but to try and look to the future and do better, or by shaking this off by denying he did anything wrong and supressing his human feelings becoming one of those fucked up people who become more or less psychopatic, angry pricks.
