One in 10 people in the UK do not have a close friend, and even more feel unloved, survey finds
Oddly enough, I bet this statistic is less in the US. US residents are overall friendlier, to be honest. The UK just feels colder and unfriendlier - both in weather and societal flavor.
Dicks are dicks everywhere, and nice people are nice everywhere.
I don't think that there would be a big, noticeable difference between Americans and Brits on the standard of how "nice" the average citizen is.
I mean, I went to the doc today and then went to the store, and I struck up a few friendly conversations with strangers. In truth, I believe most people are good at heart, and a shitty, vocal minority of dickweeds make us think otherwise.
The fact that people in this thread genuinely believe most people are shit is kind of sad.

Although reading the thread, it would seem people across the pond are kind of shitty.
Maybe that's ONE perk to living in America.

I don't really put a lot of value on those "friendly" conversations. From experience, it's just people trying to amicably function around other people, and that's all there is to it; no true feelings or anything there at all. Sometimes, once in a great while, you'll find that sort of genuineness and friendly demeanor, but in most people (including myself) it's just a bullshit facade that's put on to make things go a little more smoothly throughout the day, and maybe to manipulate a little as well.
The older I get and the more I'm forced to deal with people, the more I find myself hating them. And myself, actually, because in a lot of ways, I'm becoming more and more like they are. I seriously have always hated them though, or at least preferred being on my own to being around them. Ever since I was little, that's been the case.
There are still a few people out there in the world though who make it feel like a great place to be and make life feel pleasant, if only for a little while.

Brits are reserved. Striking up a conversation at random in public is incredibly strange, so people are going to act uncomfortable and try to end the conversation as quickly (bluntly) as possible.
People who don't have any friends at all are usually the same people who are dicks with everyone or have such high fucking standards for friendship they start hating your guts for one differing opinion.
Can't you see, this is the land of confusion.
On the plus side, 9 in 10 have close friends. :eng101:

I know that this is generally true, because, well, I live in the bloody country and I almost never see casual conversation, but I find it funny as hell because I made casual conversation with a stranger about dildos once, and the guy I struck up conversation with is one of my best friends to date.

seems about right
That's because people here are assholes 9 times of 10
This is a pretty shit thing to experience, no doubt. I have quite a few "friends" (let's call them acquaintances or Facebook statistics), not quite as many actual friends, much less GOOD friends, and finally, the life-defining demographic, your best buddies. Now these are people I'd give my life for. We know each other inside-out and I love these people unconditionally. You are blessed to have even one of these glorious human beings. I have 2. Having these 2 people in my life, cheering for them when they're doing well, laughing with them at the most retarded things and just plain knowing that in a world of 7 billion, there are 2 people somewhere out there who sincerely care about you brings warmth to my soul. Aside from your mother/father, it's this tiny-tiny group that has the potential to complete you as a human being and as a person. These very few people will probably matter the most to you during your life. Cherish them, and respect them.
Abstract mathematics is a friend enough for me.
If you need a friend, get a dog.
I've been through enough friendships to understand that there is nothing more pure than a pet's love.
How can you be lonely with the entire world at your fingertips?
I have one really close pal, even though we live 200 miles away. We play xbox and chat shit, then when I visit my mum, I'll visit him and it's like nobody went anywhere. I've also got a close pal from work who I'll normally smoke a bone with after a work.
But the reality is my gf is my best friend. I'd be nothing without her
I'm lucky to have some good friends both Irl and online.

And I mean really lucky
I'm still mates with a guy I met in year 2 of Primary School, he was my first ever mate and helped me out when I was being bullied. I still contact and catch up with him during the holidays and great-full I've been able to maintain a friendship for this long
My high school mates however all seem disposable in some sense, I can only see me keeping in contact with a few of them but not all I know.
I'm still mates with a guy I met in nursery, most people suck cocks in an industrial capacity and my work colleagues are just giant mongos, why would I want to be close to them?
I still go for pints with my friends from school, I've known my best friend for 20 years and I enjoy the company of my work colleges, granted I'm not into football which is a common topic, but I enjoy a drink and the conversation. I'm also still friends with my ex.
It is sad how technology can bring us closer together and at the same time make people feel so lonely. I can be friends with you guys.
Hey, what are online forums for.
It's like a hooker it's cheap and usually temporary. Except facepunch doesn't forcefully take money and laugh at your small penis. At least so I hear.
In Australia everyone is mates. If you get called a cunt it just means they love you
I fit into this category too!

Well no, unless you're one of those people that buy gold membership.
I have no friends :( I do programming but I'm not good enough to befriend the good people.
I'd say my best friend is my brother, but he's my brother.
Best friend's are a double edged sword in Britain, sure you have a best friend but its also the person who infuriates you the most and you usually hate em as much as you like em.
How can you be lonely with the entire world at your fingertips?
idk you could try hating 6.1% of the british population for no reason i could see that working pretty well

sick friendship tip: quoting bible verses and slinging backhanded comments at people is not how you make friends

Surely if you can't stand the prick, then they're not a particularly good friend?
Yeah everyone I know bitches and whines about those who aren't there, I know they probably do it about me as well but at the end of the day if I cut out everyone who did I'd have no one left.
You are also bitching and whining about people behind their backs.
Anyone down near brighton/worthing? Lets go to the cinema! we should make a fp brit steam group so we can play some games together.

I've never known a best friend as someone you have a love-hate relationship with. Butting heads sometimes is inevitable, though.
