edit; nvm he has alot of trolling/shitposting bans
I thought you were perma'd i guess people change eh? v:v:v
the apathetic attitude to politics in this country is exactly why our government continues to shit on us and why australia has a reputation for being extremely restrictive.
It probably gets hot under that mask with all the fire and what not.
Yeah, but why wear an anonymous mask if you don't really care about being anonymous?
oh shit it's a t-rex! but seriously it's a good image
After listening to the radio this morning that interviewed a few protesters in Philly, I kinda have to say that some of these people honestly don't know what they're protesting. Kind of let me down a bit hearing these statements: "What's your sign mean?" "I dunno, some guy just gave it to me" "So why are you here?" "Because we have to show everyone what's what!" "Because of what?" "Because we have to show everyone!" "Show who what?" "You know, that we won't be put down!" "So why are you protesting today?" "I don't know, I only got here this morning" Not going to say that's for everyone, but at least those three people need to get their thoughts together.

A protester clearly articulating what they want isn't as eye (or ear)-catching as some fool with a sign babbling.
Do you think the media is not cherry picking stupid people? A protester clearly articulating what they want isn't as eye (or ear)-catching as some fool with a sign babbling.
Regardless of cherry picking, they were still people like that there none the less. I'm not saying it's a good thing nor am I saying that the whole protesting is like that. Just kind of let me down that there are actually some that are as the media is portraying.

I like how there's just some random shit laying there, including a guitar. Do people steal shit often in Australia or what? I'd never leave my things there like that.
politicalcartoon.jpg oh shit it's a t-rex! but seriously it's a good image
It's not entirely true. I've asked plenty of people why they've gone protesting and some were clear and concise but most fumbled and some clearly guessed. Here's the dumbest one: "I'm protesting banks, because, like, uh, they're taking money and spending it on war." That's fucking verbatim and yes, I had a headache afterward.
how is that stupid? like, at all? it was expressed badly but it's still pretty fucking spot on [editline]19th October 2011[/editline]
I like how there's just some random shit laying there, including a guitar.
Apparently we have the highest rate of theft, but everyone leaves their stuff lying about and feels fairly safe. there's probably a link between the two
There are different reasons why people will be at the protests. - They know exactly what they want, were probably one of the first people there, will stick it out to the end, and could probably give an hour-long editorial on why they're there at a moment's notice - They kind of know what they want and the protests seemed to be a good fit, probably won't be able to come up with a complex reason without some preparation (vast majority of people there are this) - They saw the protests on television and figured they should go join because they know there are problems but have no idea what because they don't read the news (media loves interviewing these ones)
I would only go protest if I knew what it was about and if I agree with it. (Eg People in Australian state capitals were protesting about the Mandatory internet filter 2 years ago)
lol i love the fact that i live in Australia but didnt have a clue this was happening. Probably cause im too lazy to check the news
This doesn't really prove the wall street movement as childish rebellion. Instead it proves the degeneration of political and societal activity to it's current I don't know, I don't care, just let me live and work in peace state.
To be fair, there isn't much of a problem in Australia compared to America. We have HECS to pay for Uni, didn't get totally destroyed in the GFC, and have a minimum wage of around $15.51 per hour and 4 weeks paid leave compared to the USA's $7 per hour and no paid leave. The only thing I could think that we could argue about is the political system, which is currently not as bad as the american one (although it's starting to get annoying...). It's an American movement to improve their lives, over here it doesn't hold up because we actually have those luxuries. The most I really wanna protest about here is how the media portrays our politicians and how biased it is towards the right-wing, and the left-wing gets completely shut down. Only thing I could draw a comparison about the Occupy protesting. TL;DR: Most Australians don't give a duck because we're actually doing pretty good.
how is that stupid? like, at all? it was expressed badly but it's still pretty fucking spot on
I assume you're replying to me, but I don't know. I'll answer anyway. It's stupid because there's no super conspiracy of banks that are funding war because they want to kill enough people so they can eventually take over the world. That's more or less what the guy said because I had to inquire further, but even if you went with just the quote it's still retarded. Banks don't spend their money on war, banks have very little to do with war besides making a profit from it.
Apparently we have the highest rate of theft, but everyone leaves their stuff lying about and feels fairly safe. there's probably a link between the two
I'm going to have to concur with that statement. I also miss your old avatar. :(

I also miss your old avatar. :(
The rhetoric of democratizing countries is essentially spreading western values and thereby opening them up to foreign investment by banking institutions. They don't call up Obama and say "invade libya need more oil", but the discursive mechanisms of statecraft promote banking interests. I mean, if they were directly funding war at least then the taxpayer wouldn't have to foot the bill What the guy said could be chalked up to being asked on the spot. I'd rather give him the benefit of the doubt than accept that the only people will to publicly fight for their rights don't have a clue what they're fighting for or about.
I saw the Occupy Brisbane site a few days ago, not that long after they had moved in. There were like 6 people, and one small marquee with a table. Protesting here is completely unnecessary and frankly, dumb. [editline]21st October 2011[/editline] Next time I go in I'll snap a pic and go heckle them.

Why would the Dutch protest about anything? It's a pretty cool place.
Why would the Dutch protest about anything? It's a pretty cool place.
As far as I see it its just a bunch of stoned people sitting in tents just like most festivals here.
