With Zimmerman's defense being self-defense, his viewpoint is apparently that Martin did attack him first. Whether this actually happened I'm not sure, but something to consider is that Zimmerman got out of his vehicle and chased a kid down who had done absolutely nothing wrong. Who is to say that Zimmerman accosted him first, armed, and physically larger and Martin felt like he had no other way out then self defense? Zimmerman had some cuts and bruises so obviously there was an altercation, but it was in no way balanced. Zimmerman had a firearm and a sizeable weight and height advantage on Martin. These things are relevant.

Martin was taller than Zimmerman, besides moderate height and weight difference doesn't have much correlation on who would have the advantage in a fight. Zimmerman's face was also pretty badly messed up, it wasn't just a few cuts.

Zimmerman stopped pursuit after the 911 operator told him he didn't need to pursue. He was most likely just standing around or walking back to his truck when the altercation happened. I believe Zimmerman felt that Martin was up to no good and decided to countermand what he was told by the dispatcher and followed him, fearing he would lose a possible criminal in a neighborhood with a high rate of crime. An altercation occurred and Martin was shot. Actually the fact that he went shopping says a lot about what he was doing that night. Someone who goes to a store and buys stuff and walks back to his house isn't typically going to be casing joints or starting fights on a sidewalk.
