What?
I agree that Australia doesn't do nearly as much as it should to provide for those in poverty, but I'm pretty sure the US is already a lot worse.
Doesn't this basically mean that is would be illegal for the poor to stop being poor?
Well, the democrats are having it very easy the coming time. They only have to say 'vote for us, because we aren't republicans'.
What happened to USA ?
There is a small thing called exceptionalism that makes everyone attack anyone who critizes the USA for the reason: "You are just jumping the hate america bandwagon"

Issue is, with Obama's lack of popularity, the same could be said for Republicans.

It's the republican's fault that he can't get anything done anyway. They vote out everything he throws in and then they bitch about him not getting anything done.
Gotta love politics.
Called by me and everyone else.
When will people recognize Idaho? :smith:
What's an Idaho?
good game, republicans.
make living illegal next time.
Well it looks like the Republicans love to continue to reinforce my opinion that they're all idiots and they would like nothing more than to run this country into the ground.
Welp, Guess who's not getting voted for next year?.

I doubt it, I live out in the middle of nowhere so I know a lot of people who have to live completely off the government and they all have cars, homes, plenty of food, internet, and cable so I think people exaggerate just a little when they say the US doesn't provide for the poor.
It's not like poor people try to be poor... This is fucking retarded.
[editline]20th March 2011[/editline]
get them into rehab programs to stop them from spending all their money on crack if you really think it's a huge problem.
So they are going to outlaw being poor?
They tried doing that in the early 1800s and look how successful that was amirite?

AMIRITE?
I always try to be sensible about republicans, but it's so very hard when you hear about bills like this.
Normally, I'm all for hating on Republicans.
But here I have issues.
1. The title of this thread is misleading.
2. The article is a bullshit blog post written by someone who didn't read the bill at all well.
3. Nobody in the thread is reading this.
This is actually quite brilliant. so basically, think about it this way:
1. A debit card for your welfare. you can only really use it to buy food and other essentials, such as repairs if your car breaks down, or clothing.
2. The 20$ is not some legalese nonsense. It's very simple. You can withdraw 20 dollars from your account and do anything you want with it. It's a bit of money you can use to get a haircut for a job interview, or just to buy drugs and booze. Whatever you want with that $20.
It's not, as of yet, particularly exploitative or bad. It simply suggests that we standardize it in such a way that it can't be as easily abused, if anyone did that, while not harming those who need it.
And abuse is, in theory untrackable. If they knew who was abusing, they would cut them off.
goddamnit my state caught a case of the retard from AZ and AK
Sources
There should be a link to a source somewhere in your OP. If you're posting without a source, it should be a scanned image of a magazine. If there is a news report video without a text version as a source, you may post it.
The Onion isn't a source. Neither are Japanese Porn Websites. Editorials, blogs, and other opinion pieces are not news (certain blogs, like Kotaku, Huffington Post, & the Drudge Report are okay).

The OP cited the actual bill, how is that not enough?
Nope. I work 2 jobs, and until recently, I walked to both of them no matter what the weather, and I live in Minnesota.
Don't sit there and act like Welfare isn't abused. I know that there are people that need help, I'm not disputing that, but there needs to be an incentive to get off welfare. Welfare is to help get you on your feet. It's not supposed to just be free money that you can ride on as long as you meet the requirements. That's the point these lawmakers are trying to address. It's a real issue.
People on welfare aren't "riding on it", they're surviving on it.
You make it sound like you can just refuse to work and still get paid until you feel like you want to contribute to society again.
The OP cited the actual bill, how is that not enough?
Try reading it in full.
The premise isn't that bad to be honest, it makes it possible to track purchases and monitor abuse of unemployment benefits. I think the cash allowed to be withdrawn is too strict, but the premise of the card is pretty good.
Is there any upper limit on what could be afforded by the card? Or is it up to whoever overviews your purchases?
The last time this kind of argument popped into existance with nearlly 100 years. This is one of the many reasons why I hate Republicans!
I doubt it, I live out in the middle of nowhere so I know a lot of people who have to live completely off the government and they all have cars, homes, plenty of food, internet, and cable so I think people exaggerate just a little when they say the US doesn't provide for the poor.
Oh, for fuck's sake.
Good for them. Have a look in the cities or the ghettos sometime, won't you?
Also, are these people Caucasian?
This bill is purposely being misinterpreted to make the Republican party look bad. People who despise the Republican party are very eager to accept what is being said about it without reading into it at all.

It's based on how much welfare you get, and by extension what all is available to be bought.
And the 20$ could be higher, I suppose, but again, that part seems like it's fairly easy to change with legislation, possibly a committee or something.
The OP cited the actual bill, how is that not enough?
He cited multiple shitty blogs/opinion pieces about it that didn't actually cover what the bill did in any way other than ridiculous.
He created a misleading title that is intended to make everyone agree, because everyone on FP hates Republicans(For once here they are doing something right guys).
He then posted a link to the bill, which nobody actually reads because why bother? The title is where the important info is.
And the rest of us in different country around the world just watch.
And shake our heads.
We seriously don't know what to say anymore...

To what? The idea of the creation of a welfare system with regulations in place to ensure that it is in fact used for it's intended purpose?
[editline]20th March 2011[/editline]
You guys do understand the Wonkette is satire, right?
[editline]20th March 2011[/editline]
And that the forbes article cites the crooks and liars article, all of which are just shitty opinion blog posts.
Add it to the states that are Republican states that have fucked up this year:
Wisconsin
Montana
Indiana
Ohio
Minnesota
I assumed Wisconsin was how it was due to it being the birthplace of McCarthyism, but it looks like all the Great Lakes states are having problems.
They should check and see if there's something in the water.

The problem is Republicans.
Illinois isn't having Republican problems like the others. :smug:
Isn't this like hella unconstitutional? I mean seriously, I think this goes against like every declaration of human rights out there. Also how the fuck do you enforce this law? Do cops walk around and stop anyone they want? Isn't that against the bill of rights?
[editline]20th March 2011[/editline]
When will Republicans realize that making something illegal =/= the problem going away?
What I find even stranger is that Republicans are supposed to be for limiting government, but here it seems like they want a police state... Just like the pseudo-fascist Tea Party
