I don't think "people like it" is an argument against the fashion industry being irresponsible and dangerous in how it depicts people
I'm arguing that it doesn't warp people perceptions, because in order for the industry to have existed in the first place, there had to be a demand.
Do you feel that applies to advertising as well (fashion is essentially a type of advertising), because psychology would disagree with you
Except you haven't explained how the industry appeared in the first place. In order for it to exist, a demand must exist in the first place.
sounds like a big event
Except you haven't explained how the industry appeared in the first place. In order for it to exist, a demand must exist in the first place.
The industry appeared to advertise clothing brands
The industry appeared to advertise clothing brands
Right, and why would skinny models be the best choice when deciding on models to wear the clothing?
Right, and why would skinny models be the best choice when deciding on models to wear the clothing?
Because that's what men like looking at, I suppose. Most of the fashion industry is run by men edit: this article asserts basically the same thing, except with the emphasis on how it's run by gay men (skinny women look like adolescent boys or something)
Right, and why would skinny models be the best choice when deciding on models to wear the clothing?
I did read somewhere that a lot of fashion designers like fairly androgynous, extremely skinny and angular female models because it makes it easier to design stuff for them to wear, and it makes it more striking. I haven't got a source for that though.
Because that's what men like looking at, I suppose. Most of the fashion industry is run by men
Right. Does it seem more likely now that the demand for skinny models was actually set by the consumer rather than the industry? Because, you can go on about how it warps peoples tastes, but there needs to be something in the first place to establish that. Of course, there are plenty of people who don't like skinny people when they get horny (like me) and instead search elsewhere. Seems most likely that the reason that the industry promotes skinny models is probably because a lot of people genuinely like them, and the income lost by pissing off other people (who don't like such skinny models) is too small to get bothered about. You can regulate it to prevent the nasty cases of people starving themselves to death, but I don't think that it would also cause peoples tastes to change at the same time.

Usually the people who actively follow fashion are people somehow involved in it.

To clarify this statement, imagine that all companies manufacturing soap use unattractive models to sell soap. Will people stop using soap or even reduce their use of soap as a result? Obviously not.
Shoddy argument. If even one of those companies used a slightly more attractive model for their soap, then their soap sales would increase. Other companies would follow suit, and competition would result in attractive people advertising soap.
I don't think you'd find that the average person finds fashion models all that attractive
Yet somehow it increases sales?
Yet somehow it increases sales?
There's a perception that people do find it attractive
They don't look 'normal', they just look fat.
Holy shit is that just their "model" face or are they all clinically depressed?
They probably look clinically depressed cause the model agencies keeps telling them they are too fat, when in fact they are normal.
