i'm not saying being overweight is fine and dandy in the army, but you need to watch your wording
This is pretty much just arguing semantics, the point is you can't accept everyone in the army and sorting out people best fit for the job is essential in that line of work.
Lmao what? You do not need to do a muscle up to get over a wall taller then you. I'm 260 lbs and 5'11 and I can't do a muscle up, but I could easily clear a wall that's just a bit taller then me.
Yeah buy you've got a metric ton of bullshit hanging off you and swinging around
I think what some of you basement dwellers are misunderstanding is that is either 3 pullups + a built body of say 80-110kg with muscle. And or, pullups with combat gear (which ways a tonne) plus the built body.
I can do 30 pullups, bicep and tricep pullups but you want to know how? Because I'm skinny and weigh less than an ant.
I used to do 15 pullups and now i can only do like 4
sometimes im so lazy that i can barely do 4 pullups, sometimes i can do up to 10 overhand pullups lol
I think we should discriminate, i'm totally for it. Being overweight in the military causes a fuckton of issues aside from the usual gear not fitting, not fitting into tight spaces on vehicles, etc etc. It also causes a fuck ton of medical problems. Almost every person I've seen for back/knee/ankle/foot issues has been overweight (not fit, fucking fat). My favorite line "doc, why do my knees hurt?" "well maybe if you weren't 5'4 and weighing in at 250 your knees wouldn't hurt"
corpsman up
3? I was expecting at least 10 for a minimum, anyone whos mildly in shape should be able to do 10 at least 10 unweighted pullups
Indeed indeed comrade.
My favorite, doc I can't sleep. Oh yeah, I drink about 3 monsters in the evening and smoke half a pack before I go to sleep.
3? I was expecting at least 10 for a minimum, anyone whos mildly in shape should be able to do 10 at least 10 unweighted pullups
10 is a helluva lot
my dad has to stay in shape for TV (like, hella ripped) and he can only do like 4, maybe 5.
If I swing my legs really really hard, I MAY be able to do 3 pull ups
that muscle is pretty useless if you have all that fat weighting you down so much
also, being too fat for kevlar and being literally a giant easy target doesn't help either.
also, agility, weighing down a helicopter, and a bunch of other stuff.
Also, health risks like diabete's and suddenly dying in the middle of a fight because of a heart attack or stroke.
maybe he can sit on his enemies?
No escape. This is the USA's new weapon.

It has nothing to do with being mildly in shape. It has to do with latissimus dorsi development, which is more difficult for certain people.
Depending on your genetics, body type and/or build, the Latissimus dorsi, also known as "Lats," may be a very stubborn muscle group for you - when it comes to building it up.
I blame the DI's at bootcamp. It's their job to get them ready, and their not doing a good enough job.
With a 100 pounds strapped to you? And taking a minute to clear a wall can cost you your life or your buddies life. A soldier should have a hold to a little bit bigger standard than the bare minimum.
There is a significant difference between doing a muscle up and clearing a 6'+ wall.
Namely, if you have a significant amount of fast twitch muscle mass in your legs, you can clear the wall with a short run and jump, using your arms just to carry yourself up with the momentum and guide your movement. Which really is just as good as being able to do a muscle up, if not more efficient because you'll be able to launch more weight with your legs than you'll be able to muscle up with your back and arms, on top of clearing the wall faster.

They do a good enough job with the men.
Could be a case of being able to take a horse to water but being unable to make it drink.

You should see what's been coming out these days. New boots are getting worse and worse.

Mildly in shape eh?

Oh look he's doing assisted pullups because he weighs a metric fuck ton. The amount of pullups you can do isn't an indication of much.
Is it because of his weight or because he can't bend his arms fully?

They moved the deadline to meet the requirement by one year.

He's doing assisted pullups because he's already been training for half an hour and by that point his muscles are full of blood, pumped to crap and struggling to complete the workload. Go do a few set of curls and get back to me on how good you are at pullups directly after.
Pullups are a decent measurement of upper body strength, like it or not.
In my country, you need a minimum 6 pull up to be seen as fit.
It's definitely easier if you're built and train for it. I've seen guys at the gym do dozens of pullups in a row. Fuck, on a good day I can only do a few.
i'm almost 2 meters tall
pullups are a fucking nightmare
I can do 0 pullups
However I can do 35 pushups so I'm not sure wtf is wrong with me
being marine fit isnt about just being strong and big, it's about being strong big and able to hunk around your own weight. Fitness is about balance too.
I can do 0 pullups

pushups rely on the backs of your arms(triceps) and the contraction strength of your deltoids(shoulders) and chest(pecs)
pullups rely on contractions of your biceps and your latissimus dorsi(your back muscles).

I'd say they're only a partial measure of upper body strength, as in lats and biceps. Still have pecs and triceps to worry about.

It's an indication of stamina. The military would rather have you thin as a rail and able to carry 180lbs worth of gear over 20 miles than be a massive hulk who can't make it more than 3.
I blame the DI's at bootcamp. It's their job to get them ready, and their not doing a good enough job.
I sorta agree but not about boot camp necessarily. Im in soi-east itb right now. We hardly ever PT and when we do it is usually only 15 minutes or less of suicides and lunges. The only big physical training events here are the humps. it sucks. I thought we would be getting into great shape especially when training to become an 03 but nope. The only real PT would be whatever you do on your own time.
I can walk up to any bar at any time and do 12 and I don't even work out
so wtf
I'm glad more militaries are opening full opportunities to women, but the standards exist for a reason. The same would go for a male recruit who couldn't do it.
[editline]27th December 2013[/editline]
It says in the article that many are doing just that
honestly if recruits are having problems doing 3 pull ups even in the middle of bootcamp, I'd wager there's something very wrong with bootcamp.
I can do at least 3 and the only thing I do is run from time to time.
My best guess is, that in the past there were issues with vastly differing standards for men and women in the US military which kinda meant a of the chicks didn't really have to excercise as much.
I can walk up to any bar at any time and do 12 and I don't even work out

If you are a guy, you do have significantly more upper body strength than women. Even untrained.
