discrimination fixes nothing
Having a certain set of standards you need to fulfill in order to hold a certain position is not discrimination.
Having a certain set of standards you need to fulfill in order to hold a certain position is not discrimination.
exactly, which is why i corrected him further down on that page :rolleye:
wait so what exactly do you do?
SOI= School of Infantry. 0300 is Infantry (0311 to be specific) and Infantry related MOSs. He's completed boot camp and is now training for his job specialty.
I sorta agree but not about boot camp necessarily. Im in soi-east itb right now. We hardly ever PT and when we do it is usually only 15 minutes or less of suicides and lunges. The only big physical training events here are the humps. it sucks. I thought we would be getting into great shape especially when training to become an 03 but nope. The only real PT would be whatever you do on your own time.
Plus you've got all a approximate diet of 6000 calorie diet per MRE and that chow hall food isn't that great for your either. SOI and MCT are where you get fat- much fatter than one might've thought they'd gotten from Boot Camp. Once you get to your first duty station there'll be field exercises and plenty of humps.
honestly if recruits are having problems doing 3 pull ups even in the middle of bootcamp, I'd wager there's something very wrong with bootcamp. I can do at least 3 and the only thing I do is run from time to time. My best guess is, that in the past there were issues with vastly differing standards for men and women in the US military which kinda meant a of the chicks didn't really have to excercise as much.
Pull-ups for females is still new. The transition has not yet trickled its way down to where it's all mandatory from recruiters and drill instructors and beyond. It'll take more time, but at the moment they're testing the waters seeing where the Marine Corps. is at and what it can do to improve.
I'm not entirely understanding the conditions here. Three pull-ups and hanging above the bar for 15 seconds shouldn't be difficult for anyone who has been training for half a year or more. Are they doing it as a part of an entire course of various physical tests while geared up? If so I definitely see how it could be difficult.
snipples
-snip, wrong thread, didn't mean to necrobump-
I know this was a pretty big bump but if anyone's interested the standards changed yet again and now you can choose between pull ups and push-ups (both genders) http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/2016/07/01/11-things-marines-need-know-corps-new-fitness-rules/86582012/ [editline]12th July 2016[/editline] That should even the tables with the whole female pull up thing. Though you can't maximize your score doing push-ups.

This isn't something you want to make a trend in your armed forces.
So they reduced the requirements for both genders so that women could pass them at a higher rate. When promotions come down to perfect PFT scores it makes a whole world of difference. They didn't reduce the requirements either, if anything they made it more physically intense for females.
So they reduced the requirements for both genders so that women could pass them at a higher rate. This isn't something you want to make a trend in your armed forces.
Having high standards is good, but having a a group of people who can't pass those standards is worse. I think its awesome that you can choose between the two, pull-ups fucking suck.
After years of debate about whether to require women to do pullups as part of the PFT, the flexed-arm hang era is officially coming to a close. Starting next year, all Marines, poolees and officer candidates will have two choices when it comes to flexing their upper-body might: pullups or pushups. Brian McGuire, deputy of fitness branch for TECOM’s standards division, called the flexed-arm hang an "inadequate test of upper body strength," adding that the pullup is preferred because it requires an individual to overcome his entire body weight, while a pushup requires he overcome only 70 to 80 percent. So why include pushups at all? McGuire said it was because the Marine Corps didn't "want to create a manpower problem by having some female Marines failing." “This is a very big change in fitness testing," he said. "One of the key principles is to ensure a greater distinction between Marines at different fitness levels. ...While it incentivizes pullups, if the individual cannot do a pullup, the individual doesn’t fail.”
I can't believe I actually wanted pt
Oh my god. I can't believe I actually wanted pt
"They told me PT made me sexy!"
Pull-ups and push-ups target completely different muscle groups, used in different situations. I mean, if you get in a situation where you need to climb a rope, you need strength in your back and not the chest. They should really test both.
Having high standards is good, but having a a group of people who can't pass those standards is worse. I think its awesome that you can choose between the two, pull-ups fucking suck.
Isn't it lovely how quick we went from "they won't lower the standards don't worry" just so that we could switch it up with "actually lowering standards is a good idea". And people wonder why people get concerned about matters like these.
Pull-ups are actually quite difficult to do. 3 pullups sounds easy, but unless you prepare yourself you probably won't be able to, hence why it's the standard. Mind you, there's really no excuse that people who are wanting to join the marines can't do it.
Its not easy only if you had never done anything with your arms or if you are heavy. At 79 kg I could do almost 20, fast forward 2 years I am 92 kg and can barely do 4-5. Shit i gotta start dropping weight. Wait a fucking second. Default ratings. Oh, im replying to 2013.
I don't understand why they don't just practice doing pull-ups? Everyone can do them with enough practice and training.
Im a weak slightly chubby person but over the course of 2 months i was able to go from not able to lift my weight from straight up stretched arms to knuckles under my nose for 20 times. if i can do it, everyone can. Looked damn fit too, should start again.

And people wonder why people get concerned about matters like these.
They increased the standards, particularly for women who now have to do push-ups rather than the flexed arm hang. Minimum and maximum PT scores went up and while you now have the option to do push-ups, they matter less than pull ups. Pull ups are slightly more effective measures of upper body physical endurance than pushups, but when you have to do a hell of a lot more push-ups than pull-ups it balances out. I do wonder why people get concerned about matters like these, it's not been adequately explained to me.
