really you never talk about the weather with foreigners over the internet
I never have. Why would I?
Facepunch is as close as I get to having "foreign friends".

oh :(
I guess it's just something that comes with being close friends with foreigners.
this thread is now Imperial vs Metric

Nothing makes me feel stupider than knowing that a lot of FPers are from non-English speaking countries, and yet they can speak and write English near-flawlessly.

they put something in the water in europe that helps them learn english... don't worry
No but really since america is the "dominant" world cultural power chances are their exposure to english is much greater than your exposure to foreign languages... also consider most of the internet is in english (56% in 2011). You have to consider those 2 factors.

I saved this in a txt file a while ago. It's not my words, but I think it's something that's never brought up.
"Celsius is not superior, freezing and boiling points of water are incredibly arbitrary things to base a measurement system on. I agree that a zeroed measurement system like Kelvin is best for scientific pursuits, but for human useability Fahrenheit is truly king. The big draw for it is that the 0-100 range in Fahrenheit range is a good measure of weather in most sane parts of the world (for instance Arizona gets down to about 35 in the winter, but sometimes down to the teens, and gets to about 115 in the summer).
And for what feels hot and cold, it matches test grading, 70-79 is average, above that is warmer, below that is cooler."
30 is hot
20 is nice
10 is cold
0 is ice
40 is "my body is inside an oven now"

however the resolution is way too great
I don't think you can really feel the difference between 70 and 71 F however I'm pretty sure some people can feel the difference between 29 and 30 C

At least we're not at each other's throats.

You would think then that the rest of the world would get with the times and start using the Imperial System they way they learn English.
[sp]I jest[/sp]

So? I don't see how that's a bad thing.
Instead of 60 degrees of resolution (-20 to 40ish), you have 120 degrees of resolution (-10 to 110). Why does it matter if "some people can feel the difference between 70 and 71"?

because that's too many options?
would you like to have 12 different sizes of drink at your local fast food chain?
(and yes it matters when it comes to thermostats and stuff)

I don't see it as that, I see it as more precision.
Instead of "32.2", you just say "90". It also activates a part of you brain that says "That number is high, it's hot". I don't see how "35" is hotter than "90".
And "too many choices"? I've never had that problem, I just go by fives, my thermostat goes by fives.
Also, I agree with metrics for everything else, but Fahrenheit is better at telling the temperature than Celsius to me.

We never really include the decimals when talking about temperature. We usually generalize it as 15, 20, 25, 30, full numbers. Anything below 15 is not interesting and considered cold. Below 0, freezing. Etcetera.

But you never go above 40ish and never go below -20ish, depending on your location. I like Fahrenheit because you have more of a scale, Celsius just seems too constricting to me.
Anyway, we can argue the minutia of facts for and against temperature scales forever. It's the only system that's actually good in the US.
I don't get the problem with the day/month/year ordering on that chart, it makes sense either way
it can be "October 18th, 2012" or it can be "the 18th of October, 2012"
I will always measure my lawn by the yard, my gun by the inch, my car by the ton, my state by the mile and my steak by the pound.

09.12.06
Is it the 12th of September or the 9th of December? That's why it doesn't make sense.
40 is "my body is inside an oven now"
We get 40+ all the time in summer in Arizona. :v:
I always found it funny that the USA is all about independence from Britain yet they use imperial measurements when even we don't.

Do you think we like this stupid system, conversions in chemistry are the worst
Do you think we like this stupid system, conversions in chemistry are the worst
Honestly, if you're a chemist and having issues with conversions, odds are you shouldn't be a chemist at all given the immense amount of math needed besides converting units.
I'm going to take this one step further and say fuck Celsius too. Kelvin master race.
According to Wiki, "[absolute zero] equates to −459.67° on the Fahrenheit scale..." So there's a frame of reference.
Not really that special to be honest. My university has an NMR machine that reaches around 3K/-270C
It's not a machine, it is an instrument. It is surrounded by two jackets, one filled with liquid helium (liquifies around 4k) and is surrounded by a second jacket filled with liquid nitrogen to keep the liquid helium from boiling.
Do you think we like this stupid system, conversions in chemistry are the worst
Where the fuck do you work/learn that you use Imperial units in Chemistry? I only learned metric, and I even live in an ass-backwards part of the country. We only ever used liters, joules, and grams.

Why go through the pointless step of conversion?
Metric is much much easier and more efficient, the Americans should have converted at least a century ago.
