Box Office: ‘Pacific’ on the Rim of Disappointment Stateside, Beat By ‘Grown Ups,’ ‘Despicable Me’ S

i went to the theater when the first grown ups came out.
jeez, how the mighty have fallen
I quite liked it.
[sp]They did hype the Jaegers too much only to have them destroyed. Woulda loved to see more footage of the Russian and Chinese Jaegers[/sp] <-- Some movie spoilers.
I personally loved how [sp]the Jaegers weren't invincible, in fact they were very fragile and always looked beat up when they finished a fight. I also thought it was a nice touch that the pilots got hurt too[/sp], actually I was kinda worried that wouldn't happen but it did. The Jaegers also had a great feeling of weight to them. I guess what I liked most was that they made a movie about giant mechs feel plausible with little details like that.
That's sad when you lose to Grown Ups 2
I had to fix that because Despicable Me is actually good.
Pacific Rim was the most enoyable film I've seen at the cinema, I think.
Every single time I thought "this can't get more awesome" it somehow did. Every single time.
I admit it was more of a guilty pleasure than a serious film, but that's not any reason for it to be less enjoyable. The plot wasn't "bad", either. It was one of those situations where it actually really amused me because of how random some parts were [sp]like the "oh they were what dinosaurs are btw" part[/sp], but it didn't detract from the film as a whole. They also avoided any cliche love stories.
I just saw it last night. It was a bit cheesy, but enormously enjoyable nonetheless.
y'all nignogs should see it. perfect bro movie with some bros
I still don't understand the hate Facepunch has for Grown Ups. It was immature in parts, sure, but it's a family movie and kids like immature shit, as do some adults. The whole thing is about a group of adults who were childhood friends getting back together and reminiscing about the good old days, and acting like kids in the process. Even if you don't like the humor, it's an entirely realistic situation. The movie was a family comedy, and a decent one at that. Was it for everybody, no, because not everybody has the same taste in comedy, but to say that it's the worst fucking thing ever and all that nonsense is ridiculous. It was a decently put together family comedy and did well for that reason. You don't have to like it, but you have no logical reason to hate it. Especially since Jack and Jill is a thing. I mean, Jack and Jill can be summed up the same exact way, it is a family comedy, obviously geared more towards kids, so it stands to reason that there is really no logical reason to hate it, other than it not being your comedic cup of tea, but I mean shit. If you're going to choose to hate something Adam Sandler has done, why are you picking Grown Ups when that movie is a thing.
I saw it last night with my wife, and while neither of us thought it very good, it's certainly far better than anything Adam Sandler let's fall out of his ass these days. It's a shame Kevin James doesn't do another sitcom because King of Queens was amazing.
I came into the theater with little expectations and was blown away by scale of the battles and CGI. Really would have been cool to have more battles in the city than in the water, but they were all really good. I love the little details in the movie, especially with [sp]the vacuum created by the underwater nuclear explosion[/sp]. Also would've liked to see [sp]fights involving more Jaegers than just the last 4 (2 of which got taken out pretty quickly)[/sp].
Really recommend it, saw it in IMAX 3D.
I forgot what Grown Up 1 & 2 are about
Update on the foreign for Grown Ups 2. PR is now wrecking GU2 but please try to step it up America.

Grown Ups had mediocre comedy, mediocre acting, an overall shit plot and bad acting. If you're into slapstick "humor" then yea, sure, maybe you could look past the other flaws, but even then it's a stretch to say that Grown Ups was "good" or even "acceptable". There are family comedies that are good, but Grown Ups is not, because it is the same fucking humor that we've gotten from almost every Adam Sandler or similar film in the last decade. It brings absolutely nothing of value to the table. It adds nothing to the film scene. The entertainment value is of the lowest level, just above exploitation films, and in all honesty I'd rather watch a good exploitation film than a shitty family comedy. At least with an exploitation film your senses are being applied, while with this shitty film at best you can get a chuckle because something outrageous happens that just barely meets the criteria to be seen as humor.
Sure my standards with films are higher than your average joe and so Grown Ups is obviously not pointed at me. But I'm tired of having shit tier movies coming about watered down and chugged out to sell to the maximum amount of people who would rather watch some stupid shit for an hour and a half than go see something that effort, time, and passion has gone into, like Pacific Rim, not matter how good or bad that film may be. All the greatest films we know are not films produced and marketed because of their market appeal but because they are artistic, amazing storytelling devices, or contain something of value. Instead we just get films which people see for the sake of a cheap laugh that they would otherwise get by watching the TV for a half hour. It sells better now to make cheap shit than it does to make art, an that's a damn shame. It's no wonder that original concepts are dying in Hollywood and the few that come out are buried under shit or forced to a meager cult following, condemning them to minor budgets and limiting their potential.
So when we have directors like del Toro making amazing things which are by all means art, or at the very least passionate and well-composed storytellings (Hellboy cough), then this is something that has value to it. Grown Ups 2 does not have value. Grown Ups 2 gives us nothing. Grown Ups 2 is a cheap ride, an just like the games market is pushing marketability over merit and contribution.

Note;
Critics ratings on RT dont mean crap and have nothing to do with how good the movie itself is.
90% of users liked Grown Ups 2, which is actually higher than Pacific Rim which 87% of users liked.

implying dumb people laughing at deer piss, and fart jokes means the movie is good. all it is is for adam sandler to shove product placement all over the movie to cash in and give his friends some super easy money.
[editline]14th July 2013[/editline]
the ending to jack and jill was literally a fucking 30 sec ad for dunkin doughnuts.

90% of users liking it means nothing other than it appeals to a greater audience (who also happen to have suffered head trauma I can assume). Critic reviews of movies are actually fairly reliable compared to say, games, as there are fairly objective things you can judge movies on and people can agree on, character drama, suspense, etc.
I am completely serious when I say pacific rim was one of the best sci-fi's i've ever seen in theatres.
However, one thing bugged me above all else: These huge, 1000+ ton, solid tungsten monsters are hauled around by like, 6 helicopters. Couldn't the robots just... walk to wherever? or hell even fly there considering most of them had rockets?

I find it kind of funny you're defending a PG-13 movie as just some family comedy for people to take their kids to when an actual family comedy is reviewing far better.

maybe they have an energy system or rocket fuel?
maybe they have an energy system or rocket fuel?
hmm. possible. But still my main gripe is that they were hauled around by 6 helicopters.

I hate slapstick humor and I can't stand Adam Sandler so it doesn't mix well for me.
I hated Jack and Jill too. I'm entitled to my opinions.
People who are talking trash about Pacific Rim either:
1) Haven't seen it and are being contrarian because it makes them seem superior and aloof to stupid fun.
2) Saw it but are still dead inside and hate fun.
3) Expected it to be a ~serious sci-fi epic drama action~ movie with giant robots beating up monsters with cargo ships and were upset when *BIG SHOCK* it was cheesy and over-the-top.
It was ridiculous and silly. It was a gorgeous bat-shit crazy cheesy Kaiju movie, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
I think my favorite part in the entire movie was [sp]when the advanced kaiju was searching for Newton in the city, then Gypsy Danger shows up dragging the container ship and swings it up like a sword then smashes the fuck out of the kaiju. It was such an incredible scene.[/sp]
Pacific Rim seems like nothing more than a gimmicky, patronizing money grab, as far as I'm concerned! It's like the director just Googled "nerd culture" and crammed as much shit together in one movie as he could to bring people to the theaters.
You do realize making a movie like Pacific Rim is the opposite of a money grab right? This movie was a huge fucking financial risk.
Fuck if you want to see a money grab movie go see Grown Ups 2.
[sp]Don't see Grown Ups 2[/sp]
Before I go see it, do they go inside the kaijus? If so, for how long? This is important 3:
Before I go see it, do they go inside the kaijus? If so, for how long? This is important 3:
[sp]Yes, there is scene where a group of black market scavengers go inside of a recently killed Kaiju. It lasts about two minutes and it very blue.[/sp]

I wouldnt say anyone who watches Grown Ups 1/2 is dumb. Everyone i know personally happened to really like the first one.
And i think that when many viewers like the movie, it means a lot more than a few critics saying its bad.
I personally never noticed the product placement, and the dunkin doughnuts thing was meant as a joke (ffs, it was Al Pacino doing it)
Ive always enjoyed Sandlers movies, same with my friends and family

Too much corn and cheese for me.
I'd watch it if it comes on TV and nothing else is on, though.

Well we all have our inner demons.
Good movie =/= Good Sales.
Despicable Me 2 in my opinion wasn't a very good movie sequel in terms of storyline but it sold well with the young audience because of the humour and well thought out story pacing and probably because of the Minions. Pacific Rim didn't have good Marketing strategy
