I've read of a few cases where people have sued lottery winners for virtually no reason, and get money as settlement because going through dozens of legal battles would be too expensive.

That's what I meant, you're tax exempt from whatever you win because they already paid them. If you win 100 million in euromillions, you keep those 100 million, whatever the value was before has nothing to do with you because they already paid those taxes.

Christ, if I won 100+ million dollars I'd build myself the most badass house ever, and with like the remaining money I'd use a huge chunk to start the awesome R&D company that I want to eventually create (would have an almost Valve like approach to work in regards to doing your own thing and such).

This means that it doesn't matter because whether they pay tax before hand, or you pay tax afterwards, the tax is paid. The only difference is the moment.
