Valve is opening a new studio in San Francisco, says a former PopCap programmer. Valve has acquired Star Filled Studios, a two-man development team that was founded by ex-PopCap and Blizzard employees, Jeff Gates and Tod Semple. According to Tod's LinkedIn profile, the acquisition happened sometime last November and Valve is currently in the process of expanding.
"My recent startup was acquired by Valve and we are opening a new office on the San Francisco peninsula... We are opening a new Valve office on the San Francisco peninsula."
This isn't the first acquisition in Valve's history. In early 2008 they acquired another California-based company, Turtle Rock Studios, and took over the development of Left 4 Dead. But that studio was eventually closed later that year and the employees were relocated to Valve HQ in Bellevue. TRS was reopened again in 2010.
There's no indication as to what Valve will be using their new San Francisco offices for or how large it will be initially, or anything like that. We've reached out to Valve for more information, so we'll get back to you if we hear from them.
Thank you to our resident investigator Barnz for the information.
He's made an economy out of hats
I think that's bad enough
I, for one, welcome the growth of our lords and saviors.

I'm okay with Google and Valve running the world from California

What's so bad about that?
(other than russians laundering money with it...)
I actually imagined Gabe getting so rich that he ended up being the administrator of the whole world and making a citadel somewhere just like in HL2.
Minus the stalkers, combines and headcrab shelling... And all the other bad things...
The only logical explanation is that they want to sit next to Double Fine, and steal Tim Schafer.
california, a good choice
i welcome you, valve
If someone were to write a news article informing us that gabe newell went to a convenience store im sure itd be rated winner hundreds of times.
what is valve up to i wonder
Cool, maybe I can tour there with my friends.
This is exciting wonder what the studio will be working on first.
God damn it. I was hoping it was going to be San Diego, all I could see was "San" from the homepage
I know one person who might come back to California from valve HQ, but his work is lets say 'unique' to the general cabal. But I wouldn't be for sure until he tells me.
This is great news, I'm in San Fran about to graduate under visual development, might apply for a small internship position or something once I finish my portfolio.
Lord Newell of Valve, your burgeoning empire's borders have grown.

oh christ the thought of it. that'd both be amazing and awful. if tim and valve worked together that'd be great, but i like to have titles coming from more than one dev, lol. spread out the talented people

I know I'll be applying to beta test their hardware if it opens up. Though, this might conflict with people I know who want me to work on wearable computing.
washington will always remain the best
That's all fine and dandy, now when are you going to make a studio here in the South.
Driving from Virginia to California is not fast, and I wish to bow down to my king!
they're in my two favorite places
valve has good taste
Could this mean that Californians will have to start paying sales tax through Steam...?

Virginia would be a terrible place for a game studio. The 4 places gaming and similar companies thrive in the US are Washington State, California, Austin Texas, and Cary/Raleigh NC. You go where the money and success is.

either software, ports, or (hopefully) very different styled games compared to their own.
Yes fuck yeah I can drive there.
Welcome to sunny California!
It's been raining and piss cold for the last week.
MAke a studio in the UK
