Chef Who Blamed Picky Customers for Shutter Says He's Tired of Trying to 'Satisfy Patrons'

You really think this guy couldn't keep a restaurant open because he doesn't have gluten free food?
His food was probably shit, people managing restaurants are clueless as fuck. I know this because I watch kitchen nightmares with Gordon Ramsay.
Can't get enough of the ram.

It's a small fast food Chinese place. What do you expect when you go in there? It's not like pf changs or something.

I have been to both excellent, and terrible small fast food chinese places. Some of them really are just fucking godawful.

Oh lord, tell me about it, when I was training to be a chef in college, we also had alongside our course, one hospitality management (basically, the people who would run the restaraunts). Two questions I heard, being seriously asked. "Whats the Yolk of an Egg" and "How do you boil and egg?" I seriously fear for the restaraunts they ended up running.
I feel for the cook. My brother's a chef and he sometimes gets rather annoying customers with all kinds of special wishes. Even though I think it's not as bad as it is for this guy.
Seriously: Think about what you want before you order and if you're allergic to anything, let the staff know BEFORE they make your dish. Usually saves a lot of time and anger for everyone.

Same, I had a people chopping their fingers off on the first day of cutting vegetables lesson.
Also, at least half the class withdrew cause it was too hard for them when they entered internship.
I only managed to cut the tip of my thumb off slightly, admittedly that was one fucking stubborn carrot. But I absoloutely refused to use the meat cleaver, ont he grounds that if I'm ever going to injure myself on a piece of kitchen equipment, it'll be that.
Sorry cuntdrop, but it doesn't work that way. You use a businesses resources you fucking pay for it you little shit.
But it's California, not surprising.
Wow. I'd have strangled him with his iPod earbuds.

No I agree, some of the best places I have eaten at are hole in the wall places. But generally when I go into somewhere like that, I am not expecting the best/healthiest food.
Wait people are surprised that a small chinese place uses MSG and can't tailor to your every whim?
Figures...
These yelp reviews are good

If MSG is the tipping point for your health, then I wonder why you are eating at what looks like a a small step about a fast food Chinese place.

I think the closest thing i have ever done to making a custom order at a restaurant is swap a topping for another one at pizza hut. honestly didn't think they would if you asked at most places.
The most I've done was ask for a baked potato even though it wasn't on the menu, they were happy to get me one regardless. I dunno why people have to be such cunts to restaurant staff.
Better watch out, I bet they have dihydrogen monoxide in their food too!

I don't either, but to give an example I went to a place that looked like any other normal chinese place, the food looked pretty much the same, tried to eat it and it was actually too gross to even eat at all. The food was so bad it wasn't edible, and even that place is somehow still open.
With so many service complaints their food was probably just actually pretty bad
Of course this is all anecdotal and speculation.
I don't get people who make complicated custom orders. If you don't want what's on the menu why order it?
Aside from places where the whole point is custom orders (pizza places, Subway) the only custom order I make is 'no onions', and if there are onions I'll just remove them myself.

Don't you check reviews of the place before heading there?

I'm glad yelp has a funny rating
The brand I use calls itself "essence of umami". Sounds a lot less imposing.
sounds like a sick burn
Has anyone ever conducted a solid experiment with you?
Double Blind. MSG added to multiple dishes.
No.
It obviously may be a completely subjective belief for me, it might be something completely else in the food, I'm also completely aware that most people don't have the slightest issue.
I admit, I may be using far too definitive language (it does cause as opposed to it may cause) but I digress.
There's also a reason why it's best to not make a huge deal out of similar things. Believe MGS or something completely different in food doesn't feel too great for you. Limit the intake of it and don't push your view on other people and for instance avoid chinese food, since you know it gets used there a lot. Or avoid some premade food, since they include it often as well.
I was a cook all through college and people who either don't read the menu or think about something like breading chicken having gluten are the bane of my existence. I'll be fine with you just asking for your order to be slightly different ahead of time but don't be surprised when something is made with the ingredients it requires to be made.
As a scientist I can confirm that the following statements are 100% correct.
-Bread and grains are amazing and gluten and carbs are the flavor bits.
-MSG - Colloquially known as Makes Shit Good. As a physical chemist I can say that we typically refer to these types of compounds as a salt with a double tasty bond to an amino acid.
-Animals are great and research has shown that meat is even better.
Send in Gordon Ramsay, quick!

I hate the rubbery pickles and awful mustard they use, so I custom order anyways. The great thing with those orders is that you're guaranteed a fresh item, granted nowadays most fast food places won't stack up food under the heat lamps unless it's common items during major mealtime rushes.
I'm going to have to do that next time I get anything from McDonald's... Granted, I haven't been there but once in the past year.
I should try a chicken mcgriddle some time, there's a mcdonalds a few blocks from my dorm.

This must be what death incarnate looks like...
I applaud the guy for actually having the guts to stand up to ass-hole customers rather than giving in because most people are too afraid of being sued if they do anything.
Seriously fuck "The Customer is always right!" Policy that some places have that forces you to heed to the demands of some ignorant entitled asshole who treats you and everybody around him like shit.
