Climate change escalating so fast it is 'beyond point of no return'

I really wish we had a resident climate change expert like how we have JohnnyMo1. It would be nice to have someone that can actually break down what I should be afraid of. I'm sitting here worried that humanity's going to be gone in a couple centuries and the world will be a dystopia by the time I'm 40.
We're all gonna die

both of those things are pretty likely

I doubt it'll be a dystopia in 20 or so years. I'm not extremely well versed, but most things I've read have talked about the global sea level being raised around a foot by 2050, and around 2 feet by 2100. That's a bit more than double the rise that happened in the last century. Not to downplay it, because thats still pretty crazy, but not really dystopia/world conflict levels, not until 2100 or so, which is when you will have a lot of rapid displacement and destroyed ecosystems.
The time to cut fossil fuels out of the picture was decades ago, doing it now is like calling 911 weeks after your house burnt down. Now don't get me wrong, we should still end the usage of fossil fuels, but we're incredibly late and the impact isn't going to be anywhere near as major as it could have been if people actually gave a shit and went through with it before the 2000's.
Yes, which is why we should live life instead of locking ourselves in our rooms and pulling our hair out over it, I mean what you're describing is a long way off, I'd honestly be surprised if anyone in this thread was alive to witness what is essentially the finale to climate change.
you find it unlikely some of us will reach past the age of 60?
Maybe due to the effects of climate change on our health in those years to come, but really? Fucking really?
Enjoy the civilization while it's still here.
Eghghg I hate reading about shit like this it's really really fucking bad for my depression and anxiety
Don't worry there will be a Mini ice age in 2020.

And that's relevant how? I was pointing out that King Tiger's post was stupid as hell. You don't take a bad situation and use it as an excuse to continue the same self-destructive acts as before. That's blatantly retarded.

Good job writing off what I said while not even addressing the fact that it debunks what you originally said. The point is you are not safe from climate change anywhere. It won't affect all areas identically but it will have negative affects no matter where you live and those areas least affected are still going to only last mere decades longer than other areas, if even that, at the current rate.
I wrote that post way before reading yours, but thanks for being a jackass anyway.
If you don't want want someone replying like that to you then maybe don't say stupid shit to begin with? It's kinda common sense to refresh a thread before submitting your post anyways.
So can we charge Exxon with crimes against humanity for their role in knowingly covering up and delaying action on climate change instead of warning us and taking action?
Probably not.
Eghghg I hate reading about shit like this it's really really fucking bad for my depression and anxiety
its also not something to really get anxious about. It's really bad, yea, but it isn't going to happen in a day, it's stretched out over hundreds of years, and probably won't even affect you. If you care a lot about the future of humanity after you die, yea, it's obviously gonna be a killer, but theres also planetary missions, and science is evolving to combat global warming, so who knows if some tech will come out eventually to counteract it. (you can say its impossible, but people have said that anything invented by science today was impossible 50 years before it happened.)

Too bad escaping to space is a moot point since we still cant effectively shield ourselves against radiation.

If you want to learn more about climate change you should watch videos by potholer54. He is [del]a climate expert.[/del] highly knowledgeable on the subject.
This one might be what you're looking for, but I'm not sure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNgqv4yVyDw&list=PL82yk73N8eoX-Xobr_TfHsWPfAIyI7VAP&index=31
Good job completely ignoring where I pointed out global warming isn't simply a matter of weather, lol.
It doesn't matter whether he ignored it or not. If you plan to live in a coastal town for the next 50 years you've only yourself to blame when prices for property inland gets jacked up.
its also not something to really get anxious about. plus tech is moving at a faster rate than before. In the past, it would've taken us about 50 years to transition from flip phones to iphones, but because we've had many different breakthroughs and hundreds of more people working together to reach the same goal, we're generally moving forward in a faster rate.
I'm going to throw a guess out here, but I think we could probably reach the point of affordable and available, every day EV cars in about 4 years or less, in all shapes and sizes (so SUVS, Trucks, 18 wheelers especially since big cities are putting a ban on diesel soon, Sedans, which now technically count with the Tesla Model 3.) That's just one step of the process but at the rate of expansion of technology I can definitely see it happening.
I've heard this so many times. This is why its so difficult for me to take these scientist seriously anymore.
It doesn't take much Google searching to find all the failed predictions. But a lot of the fault is that the Earth is a very complex system. And very rarely are models ever accurate.

I've seen these types of alarmist titles in news articles for the entirety of the time I could read. Its pretty much every year that there is a new article saying if we don't fix it right now then there is going to be no turning back. But then next year happens and it turns out they lied. Because nothing sells (or gets clicks) better than "the world is going to end."
I'm all about limiting pollution, recycling, etc. But these type of news articles harms attempts to help push humanity into more efficient technologies. Because when they turn out false then people question, "what else have they lied about?"

Not even sure if he said this in jest or not but yeah, he's right. If you're one of those people who truly feels hopeless about the situation but are too afraid to actually live life then you may as well do SOMETHING.
What's the incentive to stop using fossil fuels if this is true?
We're speeding towards a brick wall. Just because we're too late to not hit it, doesn't mean we should keep accelerating and hit it harder.
its also not something to really get anxious about. why do people keep thinking it won't affect our lives, in our lifetimes?
Are you going to be dead by 2020? That's the only reason I can believe people think it won't affect them, they'll literally die before anything kicks off.
How bad things will be is yet to be seen. But they're coming, and I personally think you'll be a bit shocked by how fast it will happen, I think we all will be.

What exactly is there to lose by treating the planet with respect and not wantonly dumping our shit into the oceans, the air, and the land?
What progress will really be hindered by not using coal or the like?
Is there a downside to our planet doing better?
It's really bad, yea, but it isn't going to happen in a day, it's stretched out over hundreds of years, and probably won't even affect you.
This isn't really true. Its full extent might happen over hundreds of years but we'll see notable effects over a span of decades.
It doesn't matter whether he ignored it or not. If you plan to live in a coastal town for the next 50 years you've only yourself to blame when prices for property inland gets jacked up.
Just because you have the foresight to do that, doesn't mean everyone has the means to do that
I also wonder how government will treat your property when push comes to shove during a crisis. My guess is it's imminent domain
What's the incentive to stop using fossil fuels if this is true?
So when is coming into a thread, making a shitpost and then never replying again going to have something done about it? Pretty tired of it happening.

There is pros and cons to every action. I, for one, do want pollution to be controlled and limited, if not outright eliminated.
But the biggest problem I have is that these news articles are lying. They've lied time and time again. So what happens is people start to distrust more than just the "climate change" articles. They start to distrust other articles. Like articles that explore the issues around fracking. Limitations in fossil fuel supplies (which have lied in the past), etc.
If someone is better than make points about why its better and why humanity needs to move in that direction. Don't lie about it and expect people to just accept a lie.

The person you replied to was replying to another person who lives on the coast, suggesting or advising them to move further inland away from the coast. Do you honestly think that as the sea level rises that property value inland won't skyrocket?

If you could get your city's shit together you could jack up the whole area and build a wall around it.

That's what Galveston island did in 1903. Albeit, they had a catastrophic hurricane clean the slate for them so there wasn't much left to rise. Raised the city 15 feet in some places.
I don't feel like doomsaying and defeatism are going to help here. We need solutions, we need people who're proactive and involved, and we need hope. If you don't want to be anxious and upset about this stuff, pour some of that nervous energy into doing something about it. Write to a representative, campaign for local environmental causes, but don't lose your shit until it's actually game over.
