As a computer scientist, I don't see how there being 3E8 grammes in a kilogramme is any easier than there being 10 ounces in a pound.
What
how is that even related to computer science?
And there are 1E3 grams in a kilogram
also, kilo = thousand, thus, kilogram = 1000 gram, which makes perfect sense, unlike 10 ounces=pound
As a computer scientist, I don't see how there being 3E8 grammes in a kilogramme is any easier than there being 10 ounces in a pound.
'look at me i know what hexadecimal is'
And there are 1E3 grams in a kilogram
It's E as in a hex digit E, not as an indication of 10^x. Not that there is a point when the majority of non-computational units are determined using decimal and not hexadecimal.
Doesn't the UK still use "stone" as a measurement in some places?
Wait, Britain still has imperial speed and distance signs? why? I though you guys were decently metric over there. In Canada we changed all of our road signs over 1977.
Because that's how Britain works. Change one of the longest standing institutions to allow homosexual unions and nobody really cares; change the numbers on road signs and there will be a national fucking outcry.
Doesn't the UK still use "stone" as a measurement in some places?
yeah if you're like a billion years old
In Norway, we have the measurement "mil" (mile) which is 10 kilometers.
When speaking about the imperial mile, we often refer to it as an English mile.
Also called Scandinavian mile

Fuck the imperial system. What the fuck is a gallon?
The only thing that makes sense is measuring screens in inches, and thats because we've been doing it for a long time.
But measuring people in foots? What the bloody hell?!
Even as an American, I prefer using metric units for everything. The only time I use imperial units is for whenever giving values to other people who aren't accustomed to it yet.

Absolutely zero confusion about units and conversions here (plus deka-, deci- and hecto- are rarely even used)
My post was about how this "benefit" is nullified if your figure isn't a power of ten.

Why are metric weenies incapable of taking a joke?

I know right, how arbitrary. I measure people in light-nanoseconds. I'm not 6 and 1/3 feet tall you morons, I'm 6.44 light-nanoseconds tall!
As a computer scientist, I don't see how there being 3E8 grammes in a kilogramme is any easier than there being 10 ounces in a pound.
In what instance would you need to use units in hexadecimal anyways? Not to mention, there are other imperial measurements with equally arbitrary values in hex.
My post was about how this "benefit" is nullified if your figure isn't a power of ten.
So basically only when it would never be used, since computer memory size uses a modified system based off of metric where the closest power of 2 to a given metric indication is used for unit size while imperial is even more convoluted in hex or virtually any other number format.
yeah if you're like a billion years old
I remember seeing garry use stone to weigh his perfect girlfriend on his blog years ago before sarah
as if not being a power of ten making it pointless makes imperial measurement in the same circumstances better?
imperial is completely pointless. the rest of europe has moved on from it for good reason

garry is a 300 year old witch. but don't tell

If you're older than 20 you do, but doctors and hospitals will always weigh you in KG
There are 16 ounces in a pound . . . .
Further proof the imperial system is confusing. :v:
Last time there was an argument about metric vs Imperial it went on for half a dozen pages and everyone got very upset, so it would be best if you all just accepted that Imperial is superior.

last time there was an argument you were literally the only person arguing for imperial
[editline]8th November 2014[/editline]
FOR TWELVE PAGES
You missed the point
Luckily the point was "HEY LOOK AT ME I CAN USE LE HEXADECIMAL I AM KING BRAIN" so you didn't miss much.
it was a fuckin joke dick tracy but thanks for solving the mystery
[editline]8th November 2014[/editline]
also if you give a shit about imperial or metric systems or their use in various places, you really need to find something better to do
yeah if you're like a billion years old
Everyone I've ever spoken to will use stone when they tell you how much they weigh

Yeah right, try decomposing large numbers in bases other than decimal. Then do the same thing but with changing bases every time you move up a notch. This is your measuring system.
Don't hate on metric just because it was invented by the French :v:
Everyone I've ever spoken to will use stone when they tell you how much they weigh
it was a joke but ty for the info
Don't even fucking dare we'll invade like we did in 1812 raze canada of your metric bullshit.
Again
Metric is the easiest thing to learn ever. It would take a day, two tops, to learn the theory and I'd say about a month to get used to distances if you go outside often enough.
Just don't try to learn metric in Canada:
Food and drink: kilograms and litres
People: Pounds and Feet
Distance: Hours
Yes, Canadians measure distance in time. If I had to take a guess as to how it started, I would wager confusion between the imperial and metric generations. That said many Canadians can name off exact conversions between the two so I have no idea what happened.
does the uk use 12 hour or 24 hour clock?
Both but 24 is the standard

You're literally trying to use some kind of BS argument about being a computer scientist (if you are even, being in first year for it doesn't count) to push a measurement system that makes as bunch sense as measuring with your dick. There are tonnes of people with high tech jobs here, I'm a robotics engineer and I know there's a couple other engineers and scientists that frequent this section - your hypothetical "computer science" degree isn't making your point at all.
Food and drink: kilograms and litres

Yeah it's weird that way, but if you have a drivers license your height is on their in cm :v:
Distance: Hours
Yes, Canadians measure distance in time.
To be fair this is something that happens in the US too, especially in rural areas. If the road speeds vary too much then exact distance really isn't a good gauge of the trip while approximate time will be a very good gauge.
I use Metric, but I still use Inches for penises and screen sizes.

As an American, I haven't heard of much less use over half the units he's used in this video, but it should be clear the imperial system is easier to work with is because of its conversion factor. Unfortunately, I've used imperial all my life and that's all I can think in. I can't imagine how long a meter is, or how much a kg feels. Miles for distances just feels a ton easier.
I really don't see how it's a pressing issue for the U.S. to switch to the metric system in everyday life. I'd imagine anybody in a field of work where it's crucial to understand metric understands it sufficiently enough for the job, and it's so easy to learn that if an American scientist/engineer/etc somehow made it through his career without ever learning metric and suddenly needed to, it wouldn't be a problem. And of all the issues with America's decaying infrastructure and roadways, is switching the signs to metric really worth putting any funding towards? The average person can function in day-to-day life on imperial units. This seems like an only slightly less trivial complaint than complaining about American spellings such as 'honor' over 'honour' and the like. If you can explain to me how the average American using imperial over metric is a problem, I will eat my words. I'm not arguing for the use of imperial. I know it's illogical and arbitrary, but I just don't see how it's so important for an average joe to use metric in day-to-day life. If their career requires metric, they can learn it quickly, no problem.
