It's a fucking deer. Might be rare, but it's nothing really special.
The albino part didn't help it nor would it help the gene pool in any way.
It's just a dear with no color to it, not a new species.
Gavin will have a large trophy to remind him of his hunting success. The family is having a taxidermist create a full-body mount of the deer.
They're doing what I would have, it's one of the best trophy kills in years. And to anyone who thinks this is awful, do keep in mind that deer are basically giant rodents who do nothing but eat flowers and plants in the neighborhood and shit everywhere. Not to mention they fuck like rabbits and often cause traffic accidents because they're like lemmings waiting to die in the middle of the road. This kid got to it before anyone else, it was only a matter of time before somebody killed it, this kid happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Surprised it actually survived for more than a few years, albino anything usually has very poor vision and if its true albino its blind.
hunting culture is unhealthy and disgusting
It's sad that people no longer have respect for life. Whether or not deer are overpopulated in some areas, this is not why this animal was hunted.
And instilling that you should be proud of killing something in 11 year old certainly isn't fucking creepy

You know if hunting has been around since literally the dawn of time and has remained despite its relatively unnecessary nature in this part of the world it's probably for a reason.

Not to mention that it's extremely easy to spot for predators.

No longer? I'm fairly certain animal life has not been as respected as it is right now?

I understand hunting, and have no problem with the act of a respectful hunt. The problem is the context of the hunting. Hunting should be an act of respect, and for resources. Not so you can take a picture with a dead animal and put its head on a wall.

I don't see the problem with making a trophy out of an animal you killed if that's your hobby, as long as the animal isn't endangered or didn't belong to anyone.
The deer was albino, sure, but other than the rarity of the fact, it's still a deer - aka a big animal with a copious population and that lives for six years.
Also define "respectful". You're killing an animal for food or bragging rights, it's a basic human function.

barbarism isn't a hobby. I digress, though. I've said all I need to say on the matter.

bragging is not a basic human function. bragging is a function of the ego, which you are not.
Whether or not deer are overpopulated in some areas, this is not why this animal was hunted.
uh no that's exactly why this animal was hunted
if there wasn't an overpopulation of deer, the local DEC/game commission/conservation commission wouldn't have issued any hunting permits or tags for them

Do you think that's how the 11 year old perceives it? That's what matters and that's what I'm talking about.
I think the complex thoughts and emotional rewards of a human hunter far outweigh the inane comprehension of a dear.
he should just be shooting practice targets, fucking little shit just took an animal out for no god damn reason
a regular buck that spreads like wildfire in the area, fine sure, eat it for meat, but a fuckin rare albino deer?
the dad that taught him should be castrated, dickwad.
what should they have done? captured it and put it in a zoo or something?
its a white deer, it has next to no chance of surviving in the wild
white deer generally dont survive long in the wild anyway unless there is some strange extenuating circumstance that stops predators from killing them
plus deer are huge pests and have enormous overpopulation issues, anyone who is against hunting them hasn't gone out in winter and seen families of dead deer huddled together after they all starved to death
that makes it ok then

what an unenlightened comment. It's not a bad thing to cherish life.
Why the hell is this such a big deal? It's a freaking DEER. It's not a person, it's a freaking deer with a genetic disorder that makes it white. Do humans go out and hunt down Albino humans because they're rare and unique?(And yes, there is albino humans.) No, we don't. Facepunch, please stop being like every news agency when it comes to stupid things like this.
what an unenlightened comment. It's not a bad thing to cherish life.
So you're okay with eating mass produced meat coming from animals that have been packed in the smallest possible space but kill one random animal in the wild and suddenly it's barbarism
Do you think that's how the 11 year old perceives it? That's what matters and that's what I'm talking about.
I have no idea how this kid learned to hunt, but I took my hunters safety course when I was a kid through boy scouts and they made it abundantly clear that hunting was, at its core, about conservation, skill, and respect for nature
not all kids are violent psychopaths dude, I help run youth hunts and I don't think I've ever met a kid that was like "YEAH BOY I LOVE KILLING THIS IS JUST LIKE CALLADOOTY"
Hah, holy shit, what's up with all these "respect all life" and "asshold killed a rare albino deer" comments?
It was an albino DEER. An ordinary deer, except it got handed a short card by genetics and was born albino. It wasn't some sort of Grand Majestic Albino Deer of Wizardry and Peace. It was just a deer. Like any other deer. The only thing that set it apart from the rest of the hordes was it's unusual color (or lack thereof). And considering the nuisance deers pose in general, it was only a matter of time until someone else hunted it, or nature ran it's course it and just got killed for lacking any sort of camouflage.
I'd understand if we were talking of a species of deer, specifically in grave danger of facing extinction, but this deer was not that gravely endangered deer. Capiche?
So you're okay with eating mass produced meat coming from animals that have been packed in the smallest possible space
No I'm not, but good assumption. I very rarely eat meat. I am transitioning to a pescetarian diet.
(The nervous systems of fish are not developed enough to feel pain, plus we eat FAR too much meat anyway. If all americans ate a REASONABLE amount of mammalian proteins, we would not have the problem of the meat industry)
how is getting mauled by a pack of coyotes better than being killed instantly by a bolt?
[editline]e[/editline]
or starving to death when winter comes around and there isnt enough food to sustain the population?
Boo hoo, someone killed a deer and is going to eat it, boo hoo. Get over it, this wasn't some magical creature, this was a run of the mill dear with a genetic defect. It's not endangered, it's not protected, it's delicious.
I have no problems with hunters doing this, so long as they either eat, give away, or sell the meat from the animal and don't just discard it.
