I fully understand what forced marriage is, what about my post gave you the idea that I didn't? It's still part of their culture that has been going on for thousands of years. I never said it was right not once, I said it would be wrong for anyone but them to forcibly change it. Frankly it is wrong, but I am not the one who needs to change it, and neither are you. Unless you want a large group of resentful people living in a society that had no hand in creating.
Fuck 'em. They can resent all they want. And if they try and do something about it, they can resent in jail.

I concede but I know I had a point in there somewhere oh well
So it's a sort of signal?
I first I thought the spoon was to give girls a crotch bulge and make everyone believe they were boys. The actual plan is far more sensible.
I'm glad someone else had the same train of thought.
Last time I took a flight was about 11 years ago, my youngest brother was 13 months old and the TSA took him away to a room because of his blue suede shoes, not evening allowing my mother in. They found a bomb. Just not the kind they were looking for. .
Holy fuck my parents would have gone ballistic.
I concede but I know I had a point in there somewhere oh well
your point was: "Forced marriage is wrong in my opinion, but you shouldn't change it in some countries because it's part of their culture." that's really stupid human rights, what do you not get
I concede but I know I had a point in there somewhere oh well
no you didnt, my condolences
Just start shouting you have a bomb or punch out a security guard Instant private interview
Or if your otherwise forced-spouse-to-be is with you, and they have the same feelings, agree to get into a fistfight with them. Prevents third party harm.
Is this really uncommon or am I ignorant for thinking arranged marriages were a dead tradition in western countries?
In western countries yes, but many first gen immigrants that came to western countries basically have bridal contracts on their heads and their parents|family send them out once they reach a certain age.
I agree in the individual cases, and this is a good program. All I am saying is to go into these countries where this is normal and force everyone to change is wrong. That's all I am saying. Nothing more.
I don't think forced marriage is a major part of any culture, religion or country for it to be a norm.
no dude, human rights is pretty much above everything else ....even culture
And the fact of the matter is that the vast majority of the world, even countries like Pakistan, are signatories to the UDHR which directly prohibits forced marriages.
A friend of mine is 16 and already 'engaged' to a south african girl by his parents. Guess he'd better take some spoons on his next holiday.
Valhalla
Welcome to the golden hall, brother! Enjoy the endless feast! But uh... first, can you just take your shoes off and step over there?
I'll admit, the title confused me at first. Still, this is a good thing. These kids shouldn't be forced into something as intimate and sacred as holy matrimony.
This is a more complicated issue for me. From my viewpoint it is wrong, however this has been going on for thousands of years and it is part of their culture. I am OK with making the decision that they should not be allowed to do this, but if that's the case then you are basically disallowing their freedom of religion, or at least making them change it. I understand how horrible this can be but at the same time I understand why they do it. I think it is wrong to arrange marriages but I personally do not believe I am ina position to change it, nor would it be right for me to do so. If these kinds of things are to change it must be through conversation, and a hero within their own culture who can set things right. I don't think it's right for an outsider to come in and make them change, no matter how much it needs changing.
The religion you're thinking of does not condone and even rejects forced marriages.

On top of that rights are not equal. For instance the right to life would be higher than the right for freedom of expression and many legally guaraanteed freedoms do not give you immunity from crimes either.

I conceded that I was wrong jeeze [editline]16th August 2013[/editline] What do you want from me? Do you want me to do backflips and grovel at your feet, cause taht isn't going to happen

The whole explanation of the kidnapping thing was really interesting and cool to be honest. I mean if it still ends with the bride saying yes or no (as it said she agreed afterwords) then I see no harm in it. It seems more like a kind of formality than anything. [editline]17th August 2013[/editline] They were already dating too so it's kind of like one of those really messed up things you'd pull on your girlfriend to ask her to prom or i dunno propose but the whole "yeah my daughter you get married to this man now you don't get to say yes or no" is fucked up i agree
Isn't this kidnapping thing also a part of Irish Travellers and Romani culture as well?
This same thing probably applies to teenagers that get sent to "reform camps" for being gay and such. Most of them operate in countries where they have no laws surrounding it, so kids are taken on airplanes to travel. If you put a spoon in your pocket or something, you'd be able to escape and get help before you left the country.
They've thought of putting a spoon in your underwear as the best idea to get noticed? Why can't they just approach a guard and tell him that they're being forced into marriage, it's not like their parents can do anything about it without causing a scene.

The guards are likely being told to keep an eye out for non-dangerous metallics as a sure fire way to catch this shit without the parents fucking it up.
Why do people force these kinds of marriages?
Dowry, mostly. Might marry 'em into a rich family and get some dosh out of it.

Is that a spoon in your pocket or are you just being forced to marry someone against your will
Okay, so putting a spoon in your underwear is effective, but what about a kitchen knife? Wouldn't that be extra effective? If the metal detector broke, you could just stab the people forcing your marriage.
