What's wrong with this? Are you guys all pirates or something?
It sets a dangerous precedent
I just tried, typing "tor" does not suggest anything, however typing "torrent" gives me piracy related suggestions. Nice going Google.
is this just in america or world wide?
is this just in america or world wide?
Worldwide.
God dammit Google.
From Wikipedia hmm
Semantics. By private I meant that it is not funded by any governmental association or federal funds.
What's wrong with this? Are you guys all pirates or something?
This comes up in all threads even remotely related to piracy, it is not about the piracy it self. It is the fact that if Google can be pressured into blocking the word "torrent" from appearing in suggestions what else can they be pressured into doing? If they were to say be forced into removing something entirely from all their searches they would be effectively removing something from the internet. It is a dangerous precedent.
Is it really that hard to pay for a game/movie/tv show/etc? Pirates are the scum of the fucking earth, poor fucks.
Semantics. By private I meant that it is not funded by any governmental association or federal funds.(that we know of)
fix'd
Oh and btw this isn't the first time google is blocking something from autocomplete because they also block porn. So stop bitching.

oh no autocorrect i can't type complete words!
no
Didn't think it would. [editline]27th January 2011[/editline]
oh no autocorrect i can't type complete words!
It's also instant search.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE7043SZ20110105 Would that count if they went to Google for services?
That article isn't conclusive about actual government funding but it is indeed possible. I don't know how entangled Google is with the actual government, but since it's not totally owned by the government it still holds its individual ground as a "semi-private" company.
Is it a bad thing I am becoming a conspiracy theorists?
It's also instant search.
yeah that sucks i lost my enter key [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] both enter keys
yeah that sucks i lost my enter key [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] both enter keys
I guess you lost your mouse as well?
For all you idiots that can't read: Google is NOT restricting you from searching for torrents Google is simply stopping autocomplete from automatically completing your torrent related search terms, for example if you type "to" it will no longer automatically fill in "torrent", but if you type "torrent" yourself you can still search for it!
Sad when the few are able to make laws restricting the many. Even though its not that big of a thing compared to youtube or anything. I dont think I will see a difference personally though.
It's the groundwork for (future) censorship. And problems.
It's the groundwork for (future) censorship. And problems.
Thats what i'm scared of.
It sets a dangerous precedent
Exactly. The fact that Google even bent the in the slightest way to appease the corporations pressuring them is what makes this significant. We don't need another Chamberlain!
Where is the basis for the assumption that Google did it because the MPAA, or RIAA "pressured" them to do so?
It's the groundwork for (future) censorship. And problems.
I think this story is a little fearmongerish.
