It's neat how people are so easily swayed by things like invisible children. Watch a 30 minute video and you're suddenly the foremost expert on humanitarianism.
To be honest I never watched the video, but I shared it anyway.
essentially they point out the problem that the international community doesnt care and that it is low on the radar, and as a result they want to make it big on the radar. Instead, why not learn why something like this is is so ignored, so low priority? why doesnt it matter to anyone? why was kony able to actually achieve this level of power? what let it get to this point?
If he dropped dead right now it wouldnt solve much for long... someone would rush in to fill the gap. i wish these guys could see the bigger picture sometimes..
Interesting that these people would make a video ti help another nation, though with that help also brings things like dependence on foreign aid. Not something you want any country to become reliant on, though I do hope that there will be a time when Africa can support itself, and get rid of the corrupt fuckers in power keeping it that way.
Don't you just love how us Americans are quick to try to fix other countries yet we neglect our issues here.
Not to say those countries aren't in bad shape, but not everyone in America can related to the "1st world problems" meme, and our politicians are being corrupt, something allot of those worse off countries have experienced for far longer and far more potently.
So I wasted 30 minutes feeling sorry for some fake cause :(

Last time I checked, Kony was still killing people and kidnapping kids, and Africa in general is in bad shape. So not all is wasted.
Here's a quote from Obama about the Lord's Resistance Army Disarmament and Northern Ugandan Recovery Act.

"Mr. Limbaugh, it's just 100 peacekeepers." Yep, yep, yep, that's how Libya started, and, by the way, there's no end in sight for Libya."
Well sounds like someone put a whole shoe store in his mouth.

Yeah, but nothing Invisible Children have done to change that.

'Don’t blindly fly yourself to a developing country like a Western idiot.'
This article posts like me.
I think the writer should be fired.
i helped uganda before it was cool. oh, the congo? you've probably never heard of it.
Seems like there's very little middleground between "KONY 2012 SPREAD THE WORD AND SHARE AND LIKE AND BUY OUR MERCHANDISE" and "INVISIBLE CHILDREN IS SATAN'S LEFT PINKY".
Even if you don't donate (to the right charity organization), you sharing the story makes you part of the crowd that's currently making headlines. And headlines usually grab the attention of politicians, especially when they're trying to impress young voters. Enlarging the audience also enlarges the number of people that actually donate or do something. Either way, it's nice to see a little awareness raised. Even if there's a lot wrong with how it was handled and how some people reacted.
Far from perfect, but that doesn't mean you should condemn it. Or leave it like it is. Raise awareness about the problems of this project an dish out something against the people that annoy you with blind paroles at the same time.
*Cough*Mogadishu*cough*
How you can help: think about your consumption behaviour, use less oil dependent ressources(they mainly fight about oil down there)
Kony has been kidnapping kids for over two decades and now people are acting like they care? To me, this video is just a piece of Propaganda and the charity is not trustworthy.

I think first of all we need to get rid of the IMF, World Bank and the WTO... then maybe Africa can start to stand up on its own two feet.
I've never liked this facebook activism stuff, it just seems like activism for lazy people.
I've never liked this facebook activism stuff, it just seems like activism for lazy people.
Its a way to get people informed who otherwise are completely oblivious to a matter. We may live in the most interconnected time ever, but people have no idea about what is happening around the world. The only thing that really gets their attention is when a video pops up for a cause. In this age, even trying to get people to support a good cause requires a lot of clever marketing.
Yeah I remember hearing stories of adult males stealing handouts of others for example. In Mid-East too.
Africa has been through a hell, and the younger generations exposed to cruel violence are really affected psychologically. So little by little I hope Africa grows healthier.
Well, it sounds good on paper, but most people are just being armchair activists. They share the video on Facebook and next week I bet this whole thing will have already blown over. I know nobody on my Facebook friends who's shared the video will take any further action - that's not to say there aren't people who won't do actual stuff to help, but most of it is just people doing a fire and forget.
Yeah, but that isn't a problem with IC. That's a problem with people. While IC can encourage people to act, they can't just force every single person on earth to actually deal with it.
If you have a friend that tries to get rid of pest, and he tells you about it, and you say "i'm going to help!" and then leave your friend hanging with the pest while you chill, then it's YOUR fault. Slacktivism isn't a product of IC. They have actually done stuff, unlike most of their supporters. It's not IC faults. it's people.

I wouldn't mind it if people actually did shit.
The tone the article is written in pisses me off.
Example:
Self centered American kids are flying around the world to change it.
"Yeah dem darned americunt kidz is so self centered, flying around the world to help people in need!"
Kony has been kidnapping kids for over two decades and now people are acting like they care? To me, this video is just a piece of Propaganda and the charity is not trustworthy.
I watch the news pretty much every single day and I'd never heard of him until yesterday. People aren't SUDDENLY acting like they care they are just starting to care because they've actually heard about it.

I'm the exact same. I always watch the news every morning and have done for 3/4 years. Not once have I heard kony's name on it. Personally, I feel IC have done a great job in creating awareness. This time last week probably 1% of my school will have heard of kony's name but now i'd say about half know of him. My only gripe is I really don't see how all of this will get him captured.
Also, my cousin works for IC as an unpaid intern. From what I've seen it's actually a really good charity. Obviously with a video that gets 36million+ hits in 4 days, it will generate a massive amount of hate.
"Yeah dem darned americunt kidz is so self centered, flying around the world to help people in need!"
i don't dislike that quote. a great proportion of students only go abroad to do these charity things because it looks good on a cv
I find it hilarious how people think putting up posters in areas in towns all over North America will actually cause any effect.

Awareness in what? That Kony is still alive? Not only is IC a bullshit 'charity', they don't even know what they're fighting.

Supposedly to convince (eventually) the U.S. government to do more to capture Kony, which is bullshit. Sending 100 men and women over help to catch a single man was more than enough. (Or whatever IC really want, helping Uganda, stopping the LRA? Not entirely sure.)
The Us government has already taken action ages ago.

the last time IC convinced the government to get involved it disrupted peace talks and led to a retaliatory slaughter by Kony
this is why "white saviors" need to fuck off. they don't know what the fuck they're doing
