Ignorant and hateful will always be ignorant and hateful, religious or not.
Same as there are rational and kind religious people.
Except you aren't born hateful or ignorant. You're raised to hate other religions, homosexuals etc etc. It doesn't have 100% success rate because people sometimes start thinking for themselves but it is pretty common.
But it was an excuse, not the cause.
The will always be an excuse. Just as Russia presented in Ossetia and USA in Iraq.
Religion was the main tool of convincing people to wage wars. And it still works.
I don't see why you guys are so happy about this your all fapping to this news report, and just because a couple of countries have no religion ofc people there will still be religious not to mention the rest of the world.
I think science is awesome but its the typical facepunch athiest that are complete dickheads to religious people.
Not to (regular) religious people, just religion.

Really, can't we all just accept each other?
imagine if humans never had morals
now imagine that world
Oh man a world built on logic? I can't wait!

Czech Republic is largely atheist due to lengthy communist rule in past. Most people are ignorant hateful pricks even when their families were atheist for two to four generations. Generally the church here shelters one of the best, most charity active and reasonable people.
Yes there are still nuts on the christian side and good people on the atheist side, but there certainly the trend isn't in favor of atheists.
Really, can't we all just accept each other?
Try telling that to the atheists of FP
I'm atheist myself, but the ones here tend to be as ignorant and biased as religious people
Slavery shaped our history too, are you missing it?
Yes.

You're replying like I was saying that religion is the only possible explanation for being ignorant and hateful. It's not. And?
finallY

Just going to throw this out there. If you're going to hate on religion at least understand it before falsifying claims about it. For example, Christianity teaches to love your neighbor as yourself. That doesn't imply hating other religions or homosexuals.

I am 15, silly goose.
Good. I 110% approve of this.

Suddenly it stinks of hypocrisy in here.
not your fault of course.
You're replying like I was saying that religion is the only possible explanation for being ignorant and hateful. It's not. And?
I am saying there is little or no correlation between being religious and being ignorant and hateful.
Once met a priest who ran a soup kitchen, he paid for it out of his pension and lives in near poverty as a result
Now you can argue all day that religion does nothing but cause pain and hatred, that this guys motivations are selfish because he wants to get into heaven, but at the end of the day this man put aside his wellbeing to feed many more mouths than his own while you stare at a computer and dismiss his beliefs as outdated and barbaric
I don't believe in god, but he warrants far more respect than most of you
(he as in the priest)
Then give your point?
point i'm trying to make is that you people need to stop thinking religion caused everything bad forever
yes believe it or not religion has caused wars(or rather misunderstanding did), as well as it has caused many people to group together under their common beliefs and help others out. i'm not saying that this justifies any wars, because it doesn't, but you people must understand that people are going to argue over the way their bread is sliced(or over an internet forum), if religion disappears world problems aren't going to, like everyone here seems to think.

Care to elaborate?

If he was Atheist would it have made a difference?
People do nice things for various reasons

You have a point and I'll give it to you.
Obviously, this would be something for non-religious people to be interested in.
Sure, it's a small area of the world but it's really all about taking the first steps.
For example, if you read the "Pi is wrong" thread, you had alot of people flip the fuck out and say that using pi is and should stay the standard and then you had people like me who thought that this was something noteworthy. There's nothing wrong with pi, but using "tau" in the right place makes things easier. Is it going to be accepted anytime soon? No, because we're stubborn. Just like there isn't anything wrong with religion. It's the people that take religion and used it like a mask.
In the end, humans deserve an end fitting the description of "2012" or a "Rapture" unless we make changes we really need but are too stubborn to even attempt.
Finally.
I'd like to point out that, surprisingly, religion isn't the key to worldwide morality mk
Oh look, christians rating us Dumb... how unexpected of them.
I'd like to point out that, surprisingly, religion isn't the key to worldwide morality mk
It never was and I don't think anyone here was making that point.
The problem is people, informative man.
HUMANS.
I was already planning on having my children grow up without the knowledge of religion anyway.
While me and religion don't get along, me and history do. Religion has played a critical role throughout human civilization. Even through our nomadic days, mythology was there.
Even as its days are coming to a end, and the curtain is slowly closing. I will always teach my children about religion in one form or another.
And also, I know a lot of people here are probably extremely against religion because:
a) Their parents force them to wake up early on sunday to goto church
b) Crazy christians in the USA.
Well, this may completely overrule you needing to go to the church in the morning. You should still wake up early.
Also, without religion you'll have crazy atheists in the USA preaching the same damn thing. Religion going "extinct" will actually have very little perks except tons of abandoned religious structures.
It never was and I don't think anyone here was making that point.

Humans are also the solution to these problems
I've always assumed that religious people simply believe in X because they have nothing else to believe in. So they want some type of superior reassurance that everything will be alright, or to serve someone who they can put the blame on in dire situations.
Personally, it's hard for me to respect an individual who only does good things because it's written in some book, rather than doing it because it's actually fucking good, but I respect them regardless, and you all should too. Whatever makes them happy is none of your business.
Again, this was probably said a millions times before, but don't fucking brainwash children into this shit at an early age. Or try to convert people. That's what really grinds my gears when it comes to religion.
Just keep it to yourself.
I love people that's fucked up in the head.
I mean each time i see westboro baptist church i get filled with joy and laugh at their silly signs.

Just stop.
Of course, it goes without saying.
