• Religion may become extinct in nine nations, study says

I'd like to point out that there won't be a mass religious exodus or anything like that; it seems like a lot of you are posting as if suddenly all religion will be wiped out. In the study, correct me if I'm wrong but they're predicting an easing out of religion until it fades and disappears. Undoubtedly in the coming years pro-religious groups will again try to garner attention and following. That's exactly how it's worked for centuries, and I believe they intend to keep it like that.
I think humanity is past the point of needing something to guide it towards 'good' and 'morals'. Religion is no longer crucial for absolutely anything.
facepunch atheists lmao
Oh look, christians rating us Dumb... how unexpected of them. [editline]22nd March 2011[/editline] *sees where this thread is going* I'm getting off while I can.
You know, by making that post you are stooping just as low as religious extremists.
Just going to throw this out there. If you're going to hate on religion at least understand it before falsifying claims about it. For example, Christianity teaches to love your neighbor as yourself. That doesn't imply hating other religions or homosexuals.
It's also saying that any other god than the Christian's God is false and everyone who's worshiping him is wrong, committing a sin and will go to hell. Same for being gay. And I'm not making this up, I can find the verses for you if you don't know your own bible. And it's not the first or last contradiction in the bible.
I am saying there is little or no correlation between being religious and being ignorant and hateful.
The Christian church in my town teaches that the universe was created in 7 days, at the beginning there were only 2 people, a pair of every animal of the earth was saved by Noah's ark, gays are horrible people, same for people having other religions. Not ignorant or hateful at all, nope.
we will just find other thing to hate each other for :v:
While me and religion don't get along, me and history do. Religion has played a critical role throughout human civilization. Even through our nomadic days, mythology was there. Even as its days are coming to a end, and the curtain is slowly closing. I will always teach my children about religion in one form or another. And also, I know a lot of people here are probably extremely against religion because: a) Their parents force them to wake up early on sunday to goto church b) Crazy christians in the USA. Well, this may completely overrule you needing to go to the church in the morning. You should still wake up early. Also, without religion you'll have crazy atheists in the USA preaching the same damn thing. Religion going "extinct" will actually have very little perks except tons of abandoned religious structures.
I use to be a happy Catholic until I realized it had just as much going for it as a fiction novel. I've since dropped any religious belief at all and think that it's a corrupt organization (Catholicism) fueled by delusion and miss-information, passed down from generation to generation as fact. It's therefore generally indoctrinated into people at a young age and therefore I can't blame people for believing in a God or deity. Yes, there are good and wonderful people that are religious and it claims to spread good and charity and all that jazz, but I still believe the world would be a nicer, more scientifically literate place without it. It's time for it to go. I hope all religious people will "see the light" and come together under humanity rather than their one true, all knowing, all powerful god that is the only real one and all the other gods are false because my ancient book says so. I still respect and tolerate their decision to believe in bullshit, though.
It shall be a grand day when the harmful opium of the masses is finally extinguished. The dream of Karl Marx, Lenin, etc shall be realised, and one less evil in the world shall exist.
I think humanity is past the point of needing something to guide it towards 'good' and 'morals'. Religion is no longer crucial for absolutely anything.
There's just no point for it anymore.
i use to pray to god then realized he probably didnt speak english because he's some sort of fucking cosmic entity that creates everything with the flick of a switch or some shit like that
Oh Facepunch Atheists, you so crazy Really, you're on the same level as the religious nutjobs you claim to be so much better than
Yes it teachers that sinners go to hell but it doesn't tell believers to hate the sinners.
There is a giant difference between what's written in the bible and what are people teaching. If you can't see it then you are ignorant. If people would follow the bible as they should, the "lets go to war because they are heathens" wouldn't work. But then again, everyone who works on sunday would be stoned to death.
They should start taxing religious organisations now in order to hasten its decline. People will go as far as to brick up their windows or not buy soap in order to avoid paying tax.
I think humanity is past the point of needing something to guide it towards 'good' and 'morals'. Religion is no longer crucial for absolutely anything.
Humanity has always looked for some type of religious guide for the longest time now. Religion is just a way to fill the hole in the understanding we have for humanity. Like if your children ask "What happens when we die?" You probably aren't going to tell them the truth as a parent. So, you'll probably make up something comforting. We like to feel good and we like to think we understand things.

I have to agree though, If pastors/preachers/etc actually taught what Jesus preached then Christians wouldn't look as bad as they do now.
when is the last time you heard an atheist picketing a gay bar or strapping a bomb to his vest and detonating it in a hotel lobby?
Religious extremists kill people, Atheistic extremists annoy people. Though I wouldn't be surprised if some mentally unstable atheist shot up a church or something stupid like that. People in general have a tendency to be assholes.

Religion isn't the problem, humans are.
still doesn't denote the fact that the entire premise of christianity is based off of human arrogance

Mainly people doing things that the God explicitly forbidden, supposedly following his teachings.
Yeah, it's not the religion itself that I dislike, but what grew around it, and against it. Mainly people doing things that the God explicitly forbidden, supposedly following his teachings.
I couldn't agree more. It's sad how the ones ignorant to their "faith" get the most attention publicity wise. It also irks me how people in general are oblivious to what they say they believe in.
The reason I want religion to decline is because there are men who abuse it in order to gain power, money and land. All I want is for religion to decline so much that it can never threaten people anymore. Fine with people worshipping something. I don't like it when they take it further than their own home where they pay for the erection of religious structures or serve in the holy war.
I'm from Wales, and I do not believe in God.
Do these idiots really think religion will become extinct in Ireland in the foreseeable future? Really? Fucking Ireland? Self-righteous morons in their ivory tower.
