More people smartening up, good.
The thing is, if the invisible massless pink teapot really did exist, we'd have no way of knowing because it effectively doesn't do anything that allows us to detect it, or affects the universe in any way at all. So you can assume it doesn't exist.
What if the influence it has on things is also not detectable by our tools. If you want to disprove god(s) it's better to test them on logical basis. "All loving, all forgiving, entity condemning people to suffer for eternity"
Oh nothing, it's just the fact Christianity teaches people a number of things, things that a very large vocal portion of people then go out and do the complete opposite on many occasions. Thou shall not kill, that's a fun one. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor, even better. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witch-hunt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusades Not a very good track record on top of trying to persuade people that there is a magic man above the clouds that will judge your life after you die, and if he doesn't like you he'll send you to a horrible place that you will be the subject of horrible punishment for all eternity. but all the horrible things the people in the institution did or let happen are fine because God said so. but none of this is your fault specifically because, of course, you had nothing to do with it, but the fact you still support an institution that has violated the laws that it was founded on in multiple instances is quite irrational. why not just do good for the sake of being good, and not say an invisible magic man influenced your decision?. Do you fear being wrong?, is that it?, is that why you continue to associate with a hypocritical body?, just on the slim chance that they might be right about all this and it might save you from their supposed eternal damnation and your life will have some sort of meaning if you play along with their little charade?, or are you not that intelligent and just believe what people have hamfisted you over the head with. I and many other people know that these questions cannot be answered because the dead don't talk, you can do anything you goddamn (heh) want to and the only ones you have to answer to is yourself and other people, and no, that does not mean go out and kill people, though you could do that I suppose and the universe being reactionary will just have to roll with it, just as it has, since the beginning of time. and you could continue to entertain Religion and it's theatrics in front of a curtain of impenetrable ambiguity saying they have all the answers and because no one can see beyond the curtain not even them, no one can say weather or not their assumptions are right or wrong, so they maintain it automatically makes them right, I suppose, if it amuses you or gives you something to do with your time.
Like you said, it's not my fault that people don't practice what they preach (or should be according to their holy book). I'd also like to point out that I'm an atheist. I don't see why you're assuming I'm a christian. I just find it that religion is fairly defended in a thread that is predominately bashing. Though, members like you give me hope.
aren't moderators supposed to avoid making bad threads to be role model posters or whatever because making a religion thread that is fuckin screaming for a shitstorm to start seems like a pretty bad idea to me
I have. Anecdotal evidence countered with further anecdotal evidence. What now?
Now we both have our reasons for our opinion. I'm ok with that. Sure I don't like fundamentalists, but that goes for both sides. Atheist fundamentalists are just as bad as the religious ones. I know why I'm agnostic. If there is no way to decide a matter, I simply don't make the decision. End.
aren't moderators supposed to avoid making bad threads to be role model posters or whatever because making a religion thread that is fuckin screaming for an shitstorm to start seems like a pretty bad idea to me
We're pretty civil in here. Except for few posts going "lol shitstorm"
So you can assume it doesn't exist.
Assumptions are a crewed way of finding a fact.
We're pretty civil in here. Except for few posts going "lol shitstorm"
Gotta agree, this is the most controlled religion thread that I've seen on facepunch.
But the idea of it exists.
Sure. But that doesn't mean it exists. The idea of my house inflating to the size of a galaxy exists (because I just thought about it), but it won't ever happen.
Why be happy that something that shaped how we live today is becoming extinct? I don't mean God making people of shit like that I mean hisotry, for example the Crusades, Aztecs, Indians. Without religion the world would never be how it is now.
You're right, we should never have abolished slavery. It really shaped how we live today.
A world without religion. Does it feel kind of empty?
i dunno bout you but i'd prefer hoverboards and huge spaceships over obsessing over a book
We're pretty civil in here. Except for few posts going "lol shitstorm"
there's literally a GD rule against making religion threads this is a religion thread
Does this mean the Republicans won't have an excuse for being douchebags, eventually? v:v:v
its news in the news thread
Religion ruined my life, if it didn't exist i would probably sitting on mars now drinking tea with the Martians. But noooo! We just had to pray to shit that don't exist and now the Martians are dead since we didn't come in time to save them.
Odd Norway/Sweden isn't on that list, I know very few religious people. In my class on 30 there are 28 atheists, one agnostic and one Jehovah's witness.
I was already planning on having my children grow up without the knowledge of religion anyway.
Fundamentally, that wouldn't make you any better than the hardline religous people who brainwash their kids.
there's literally a GD rule against making religion threads this is a religion thread
This is a news section but yeah, when one of the main religions disbands or significantly changes and someone makes a news thread about it I'll report him personally.
i dunno bout you but i'd prefer hoverboards and huge spaceships over obsessing over a book
How can you say that? There is no way of knowing? Maybe reading, writing and arts would have been forgotten in the middle ages without the protection of the church, cloisters were pretty much the only ones providing knowledge to people in the dark ages of roughly 400 to 1100.
FP. Intolerant and ignorant. Edit: Point proven.
Alright, sure, I'm neither happy nor upset with this.
I'm no fan of religion, but saying it causes pretty much all the worlds problems is pretty ignorant.
the first few pages make it look like you guys would praise someone bombing a church...
Fundamentally, that wouldn't make you any better than the hardline religous people who brainwash their kids.
Depends whether he means suppressing all knowledge of religion or just not telling his kids about religion. If I ever had kids, I'd make sure they knew about religion. I'd make sure they think for themselves and come to their own conclusions about it (ironically my dad, a true christian, was the one who told me this when I was 6.) [editline]22nd March 2011[/editline]
the first few pages make it look like you guys would praise someone bombing a church...
Find me an atheist who has suicide bombed a church
I am just upset that half of Facepunch acts like this is the best news in the world. Really? Only a tiny, vocal minority of religious people are the anti-science, violent bigots you make them out to be. Most of us are just regular people.
i dunno bout you but i'd prefer hoverboards and huge spaceships over obsessing over a book
A world without religion wouldn't necessarily be all hoverboards and dandelions you know.
FP. Intolerant and ignorant.
people who don't read the thread. Misinformed and generalizing.

That tiny, vocal minority is messing up your reputation and I honestly don't see enough of you "normal religious folk" being equally vocal. It's like we're cleaning up your garden, you should be the ones doing that.
