FP. Intolerant and ignorant.
We are the Internet, what do you expect? Understanding? HA!
Slavery shaped our history too, are you missing it?
As an upper class white person? Yes :(
I am just upset that half of Facepunch acts like this is the best news in the world. Really? Only a tiny, vocal minority of religious people are the anti-science, violent bigots you make them out to be. Most of us are just regular people.
those people are somehow politicians
Well then clean up your own trash. That tiny, vocal minority is messing up your reputation and I honestly don't see enough of you "normal religious folk" being equally vocal. It's like we're cleaning up your garden, you should be the ones doing that.
I am being vocal, but people usually don't recognize me as being religious. And you aren't cleaning our garden, you are throwing trash over the wall and hoping we leave because of it.
Find me an atheist who has suicide bombed a church
What's that supposed to mean? Stalin was an atheist and he leveled thousands of churches and had more than 100,000 priests, monks and nuns executed.

While accusing us of generalizing.
What's that supposed to mean? Stalin was an atheist and he leveled thousands of churches and had more than 100,000 priests, monks and nuns executed.
Oh great, it's the Stalin argument. Crockoduck inbound.
I honestly can't stand anyone who needs some form of label to make them look better. Atheist, Christians, Anti-Smokers, Smokers..? I don't give a fuck what you are, just stop acting like everything in life needs some form of subjective meaning to be enjoyable.
those people are somehow politicians
There's also plenty of sensible politicians.
For every outspoken idiot bigot of a religion you can bet your balls that there's plenty of people who agree with him who you would think were rational people.
Please freeze me and then wake me when religion doesn't exist anymore, thanks.
What's that supposed to mean? Stalin was an atheist and he leveled thousands of churches and had more than 100,000 priests, monks and nuns executed.
He still didn't suicide bomb a church. He didn't kill those people FOR the sake of atheism, he killed them because he was callous and power-hungry. Here's a good quote : "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. "
I am being vocal, but people usually don't recognize me as being religious. And you aren't cleaning our garden, you are throwing trash over the wall and hoping we leave because of it.
We didn't cause your vocal minority to exist, they exist because you permit it. Truth be told I'd tackle someone throwing trash over the fence, hoping you leave because of it. Personally, I don't have a problem with a person's personal belief and I would never make religion illegal. While I would like people to have a rational explanation for what they believe, I accept that there are those who do believe things for no real reason, and so long as it doesn't affect their or my life in any impactful way, I don't care that much. Stalin didn't do what he did because he was an atheist. Hitler, on the other hand, was a Roman Catholic, but you don't see me attributing his jew-killing to his faith.

Thing's that make me say "Wow.." Usually you can dig it out of the older folk(everyone has a racist grandpa), but it does get passed down to younger generations which scares me. Then again I do live in the bible belt so it could just be that.
:gizz: all over this thread.
There's also plenty of sensible politicians.
my point being is that they're slowing down a modern society and causing more harm than progress, and shouldn't have power anymore
I'm a scientist. I don't look for answers, I find them.
Good! When you find those answers for things let me know, cause I'll be glad to read, and learn something new.
Find me an atheist who has suicide bombed a church
I cant, he blew up :downs:
While you are right, a staggering number of religious people I've met have some sort of hidden bigotry they don't like to admit. Then again I do live in the bible belt so it could just be that.
I know what you mean, dude. I thought one of my long time friends was a great, progressive christian, and this one time we were watching Watchmen. You know in the opening credits where those lesbians are killed in the bedroom and "WHORES" splattered in blood over the wall? He goes "oh yeah, I'm not a big fan of gay people, but that is just wrong" I mean sure at least he didn't agree with killing them, but it exposed a personal prejudice that I didn't think he even had. He's still extremely progressive for a christian (as are many in the UK) but I didn't expect it at all. Why did he feel the need to mention that? It's like if I went "I'm not a big fan of black people but..." I didn't actually say anything and forgot about it in a bit, but still... :v:
How can you say that? There is no way of knowing? Maybe reading, writing and arts would have been forgotten in the middle ages without the protection of the church, cloisters were pretty much the only ones providing knowledge to people in the dark ages of roughly 400 to 1100.
On the other hand, religious folk have in the past and present repeatedly stood in the way of progress and discovery on the basis it conflicts with their belief system. Take for example the idea of the modern solar system where planets orbit the sun - the original though was that the plants, stars, and sun orbited Earth because, after all, God made Earth so we must be the center of the universe. Or moving to protect the belief and education of intelligent design / creationism in Texas, as the recent news thread mentions. Voting against stem cell research, probably cloning research, and voting to suppress liberties of people based entirely on their sexual orientation. Religion is the leading cause behind war - the Crusades, our current involvement in the middle east ( Jihad is religious war ), a relevant factor behind the racism and xenophobia in general, a factor during the second world war, a root cause of slavery, and generally used by people as an excuse for their own actions. Imperialism was made accessible by religion - in many cases countries of a Christian / Catholic persuasion claimed foreign lands as their own by "acting in the name of God" despite having no legitimate claims in whichever country was claimed. Religion itself is a tool. If people used it as nothing more than the allegory it is, the world would be a better place. Instead, we have people treating a book as the absolute truth and corrupt people using the tool incorrectly to achieve their own goals that often directly conflict with the teachings in the Bible.
What's that supposed to mean? Stalin was an atheist and he leveled thousands of churches and had more than 100,000 priests, monks and nuns executed.
Stalin was more into Astrology then Atheism.
Once met a priest who ran a soup kitchen, he paid for it out of his pension and lives in near poverty as a result Now you can argue all day that religion does nothing but cause pain and hatred, that this guys motivations are selfish because he wants to get into heaven, but at the end of the day this man put aside his wellbeing to feed many more mouths than his own while you stare at a computer and dismiss his beliefs as outdated and barbaric I don't believe in god, but he warrants far more respect than most of you
I agree with this. Although im an atheist and believe the world would be a better place without relegion, you can't deny that there are good religious people, who shouldn't be discriminated because of the actions of a few.
The idea of a god will probably never disappear. Religion, maybe.
"'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."
I've argued about the failures and senselessness of religion on this forum for five years. I'm tired of having to go through it again every few months. There are plenty of old threads about this around. Go read through them, they'll provide more than enough evidence.
my point being is that they're slowing down a modern society and causing more harm than progress, and shouldn't have power anymore
I agree with you but how do you propose these people be identified and removed from power? Democratic elections are our best bet to ensure level headed people have a say in important matters, it's also how idiots and bigots get into office since there's always a group of people who are persuaded into voting for them.
I as an atheist embrace to thought of the psychological disorder known as religion becoming extinct.
I'm not against religion in any way. It's just that religion in its current form is not really good. The idea of religion itself isn't bad. I believe there's a god. If you don't, that's ok. Just don't try and force me to not believe in it. [editline]22nd March 2011[/editline]
I as an atheist embrace to thought of the psychological disorder known as religion becoming extinct.
People like you are the reason why religious people are so fucking annoying.
Religion, particularly christianity had a HUGE impact on european culture that is still present even today. Our morals and habits come from many hundred years ago. I myself live in Finland and the amount of atheists has skyrocketed in a few years. I personally believe that religions have a place in society to fill the spiritual side of life and give advices to people. It's a huge gain, but also a huge loss.
I as an atheist embrace to thought of the psychological disorder known as religion becoming extinct.
Because anyone who believes in god is mentally retarded, right? You're a real winner, aren't you?
