OSX is IMHO better than Linux for doing programming/web development. A full *nix-based system with proprietary software like Photoshop so you can actually get shit done rather than fucking about with shite like GIMP. Package managers available too like Brew. And since they're popular machines for developers every cool new tool seems to come out on Mac first, then Linux, then Windows (if you're lucky).
Having a functional (I think) bash CLI with an extremely polished UI and access to many higher-end developer tools really is great. I'm thinking of selling my Surface for a MacBook since I rarely leverage the benefits of the Surface (tablet, pen.)
Didn't they say tablets would replace desktops like five years ago?
They have for many people, tbh. Like, desktops are obviously going to be a necessity for our particular demographic for the foreseeable future, just because most of us appreciate playing hardware-intensive games and things of that nature. But for those who just use their computers for web browsing, simple flash-style games, social media, Netflix and video streaming, music services, and even light work duties? Tablets offer everything they need in a sleeker package at better price points.

The better price point is apparently about $1000 if you want a keyboard.

[editline]11th November 2015[/editline] But I guess it's just cheaper that way.
"It's trying to be a tablet and a notebook and it really succeeds at being neither. It's sort of deluded."
Tim Cook, on the new Microsoft Surface
This isn't politics or a public police case. He has every right to voice his biased opinion about his product made by his private company. It's called advertisement. I don't know which planet you live in if you think advertisement is wrong. :shitposting:
You're missing my point. His 'advertisement' pitch makes him look uneducated in computer technology and basically like an asshole. When the hell did politics get brought up? Mac has been using this marketing strategy for a long time. Shit on other available options in order to promote your own. Frankly, that type of biased marketing is an asshole move by anyones standards.
He said for many people, not specifically for the type of people who post on Facepunch. This will replace your average Grandma's computer for posting on Facebook and email. Fuck me guys.
Tim Cook is talking about the iPad Pro, though. The better price point is apparently about $1000 if you want a keyboard.
Ye, that's silly as heck. I was talking about tablets in general. Nexus 7's start at, like, $160 now and they are rad lil' gadgets. I just wish they would change the charge port. Micro USB is way too dang flimsy.
For casual users that don't care about how much stuff costs, sure it will probably be a good replacement for them. For more advanced users iOS needs to change a lot before that happens. A touch screen Macbook would be great, much like the Surface Pros but maybe they don't want to cannibalize iPad sales or something.
If the iPad pro shipped with OSX maybe, I'm a technical animator, MacBook Pro is my primary mobile workstation. I hardly ever use OS X anymore (mostly because the OS X version of Maya 2015 is an abomination) honesly I wouldent trust myself with any other kind of laptop, seriously MacBook pros are built like tanks you can't break them. I've fallen on it, dropped it from the second story of my house. Flung it across an icy parking lot when I tripped, the unibody is full of dents but I've never had to take it in for hardware repairs in the 3 years I've had it. (Except that one time I spilled beer in the keyboard and just let it soak in overnight.) I'd like to see an iPad pro take that kind of abuse.

I use my macbook pro to operate a digital audio workstation. I have it hooked up to a couple 27" screens Lets see the ipad pro do that.
For travelling business users who use a Citrix environment, can easily see this happening, still a small demographic though
iPads are getting more practical but if Tim Cook thinks that iOS is going to render OS X useless soon then he's nothing but a fucking idiot
does he not get the point of a desktop lmao a desktop just raw power. Just a really good computer with a lot of storage space that gets everything done. of/c there's always buying a cheaper desktop but you aren't sacrificing anything like you are with a tablet just to get mobility. For the same price of a flashy tablet, you could get a better computer. you just can't walk around with it.
Good luck getting me to use a iPad Pro for school when I have to be productive with lots of writing, editing, researching. Why would I even get a iPad Pro? For me a Surface would be the holy grail because it offers things I need.
I haven't had a working PC for about 3 years. I've been on the same ipad forever and for me it has replaced the need for a PC, I pretty much only browse the internet and use facebook. I'd like a gaming PC but I already spend all day sat at a computer at work.
He's either smoking a lot of strong kush or he's being incredibly optimistic.
Usually people "smoke a lot of strong kush" so that they can make sense of complex situations they can't understand. It may seem overly optimistic, but the person makes a lot of sense.
Bill Gates also said that no one will need more than 640k of memory.
Bill Gates also said that no one will need more than 640k of memory.
He never said that though. Or at least it's so hard to prove he said it that it really doesn't matter.

I've broken so many micro USB cables ;( [editline]12th November 2015[/editline]
Bill Gates also said that no one will need more than 640k of memory.
Iirc he's denied being the genesis of that quote. And even then, at the time it was pretty true. It doesn't mean that tech should have just -stopped- at 640k, just that a majority of users didn't need it immediately. I could say that no one needs more than 8gs of ram, but even now getting 16 ain't too bad and its only getting cheaper
R...O...F....L..... apples are for people who dont have a clue and tablets will be short lived as compared to PC's... (User was banned for this post ("Shitpost bump" - Craptasket))
Many people in this thread totally missing who these products are actually aimed at. For middle aged people with little tech knowledge an iPad is perfect. Yeah they could do more if they got something else, but they don't NEED to do more. They want an easy to use interface that's standardised and easily accessible apps to read the news, play a game or two, watch some videos & store their photos. If the reason you think his statement is false, or think iPads are pointless, is that they're too limited and not powerful enough: you're not the target market. You can go and bet something better for you because you're more clued up. But he IS right.
I have one and it's pretty much the best tablet ever but it could never ever replace a laptop
Christ, can you imagine how horrifying it would be to have your only computing experience consist of being locked up inside iOS.
That would be awful
He said for many people, not specifically for the type of people who post on Facepunch. This will replace your average Grandma's computer for posting on Facebook and email. Fuck me guys.
I doubt your average grandma could reasonably afford an apple product from within the last 5 years
I doubt your average grandma could reasonably afford an apple product from within the last 5 years
A grand really isn't absurd for someone who saved for retirement properly and is buying likely the last computer of their life. Maybe second to last.
Since someone necro'd this thread I'll just say the reviews i have heard aren't encouraging. Yes it's a great tablet but its not very productive outside of drawing applications, yet the promised stylist that makes this product, isn't included with it, much to typical apple fashion, its an expensive add-on instead of bundled with the tablet. The split screen apparently only works with a few apps so far and oddly enough you can't have two safari pages up side by side, you can only run two separate apps side by side. Overall it probably isn't replacing desktops any time soon because its still very inflexable and its price is way above what someone is willing to pay for a simple laptop
I'm confused as to who these "people" are. The most casual user would simply use a regular iPad, and most people concerned with getting actual work done will continue to use Surface/Windows machines.
My mom actually is using an iPad pro full time now, it's replaced almost everything for her. It's a pretty cool, however overpriced device. It's large, but deceptively light. She's a real estate agent and the screen is perfect for showing stuff off to people and it works as a communications device that syncs with her phone easily enough.
Hes not wrong if he just said tablets. If I needed just some internet/netflix machine I would probably just get a tablet at this point, which is what the majority of people just need. Its either, pay like $600-800 for a cheap shitty laptop. $600-800 for a shitty desktop UNLESS custom built, which the tablet buyers wouldnt do anyways. Or they can buy a decent tablet for like $400 thats braindead easy to handle and use. Extremely easy to bring places.
i mean if i were to spend that much on a tablet i'd get a surface book/4
