Iran can hardly lead any proxy wars with the US, let alone in Syria. Also, business competition. Weapon deals, loads of money in the long run.

Supplying and helping him in every imaginable way except actual combat troops

It certainly participates, that's correct, yeah.

At least from what we can discern, unsure what else is hidden well behind the scenes.
