almost none at all.
Maybe if the games weren't so overpriced people wouldn't need to pirate them? Only about 10$ goes back to developers from that 60$ price tag, the rest goes to marketing/publishers/distributors.
Hell I don't feel bad for Sony or crytek. Killzone 3 wont even be effected by this leak anyway, no one is gonna download a 40gig file/ have a bluray burner / buy a bluray disk just to play it.
I'm sorry to break it to you Crysis 2 fanboys but their overpricing the game, so I'm GLAD that it got leaked. Do you know why games are normally priced 60$ on consoles and $50 on pc? Its because developers on consoles also need to pay $10 royalties to the console manufactures that their game is on. So why is it that Crysis 2 on PC is 60? Maybe its just me, but I cant feel sorry for a company that overprices their game on the platform it was originally on.

Looking around I see that 50GBs are actually around 10$-$15 each

I Honestly am starting to hate the piracy community. Sure, a Crytek employee leaked the game, but, it does NOT help when there is people out there who would have bought the game and now decide not to due to this shit. Same goes for Killzone team.
What about the people that weren't going to buy the game but now are because they want the full experience + Multiplayer?
It goes both ways, Piracy of games doesn't do anything more against a company than it also does for the company
Atleast we had a demo or two this year.
You don't have to pirate to buy good games. You just have to exercise self-control and common sense. I've liked all the games that I've bought because I usually wait a few weeks before I make a decision to buy it or not. I look at professional reviews, solo reviews, popular opinion, as well as gameplay footage, interviews, and judgments based on previous titles from that company. I think the only games that I bought spontaneously were Dragon Age and Dead Space 2, and I found both of them fun.
Someone's never heard of paid or overly biased reviewers.
Shareware demos IS and will always be the best way to find out if you like a game or not.
Sadly publishers nowadays thinks demos are a waste of time.
There's a loader for hacked PS3's so you can load games directly from it's HDD.
But with games that size, the harddrive's gonna be filled up quickly
Actually yeah I completely forgot about that. Unless someone puts in a new HDD, you're right, it's gonna fill up damn quick.
Is it particularly bad that I find the idea of games being leaked months before release causing developers to rage against piracy rather than their own corrupt employees who leaked the game in the first place to be hilariously funny? :v:
Oh great, don't let RPS find this thread. We might get a flood of users.

I read reviews, a lot of them actually, and I play the demos when they're available. And I do all sorts of research into the games I actually like, I probably spend more time than I should doing this sometimes, but in the end, the best way to know if you're going to like a game is to play it. No amount of research equals that. 10 minutes, 15 minutes? I can make a pretty good judgement of whether or not I'm going to like this enough to play it for longer. Give me 2 hours and I know for sure. I don't think it's outrageous to ask of developers of AAA and AA games to make a 1-2 hour demo of their game, specially designed for that purpose. Similar to say, Dead Rising 2 Case Zero and Case West. I think both of those games are perfect representations of their full counter parts, and by in large, would give all players that want to really know and not buy on impulse, be able to make an informed decision. It's more than manageable, I assure you. Not to mention, the developers of these games are people, even in the biggest studios, the developers are people, most likely passionate about the game they're making, and the work they do, on some level. These are people that want to put out a quality product(generally), and want people to buy it based on it's quality. I believe they'd be okay with doing something like that for games. But who knows what the business end would say to that.
Pirates are people who have no intention on buying the game anyway, so really they don't affect sales in any way, they just use a copy that they can use freely.
This, "But I buy the games I pirate!!!11" is not a good excuse, you might, but most do not.
If you want to talk about good and bad excuses, let's talk about Activision pushing out a new Modern Warfare game every fucking year, then spamming it with a bunch of overpriced DLC map packs. Or how about how almost all companies in the gaming industry have decided to dump the concept of demos so it's impossible to even try the game before you buy it without pirating it (for what reasons, specifically, one can speculate... I suspect it relates to preventing gamers from deciding ahead of time whether or not to spend $60 on each game dished out)? Maybe we could discuss how CA and SEGA railroad through each year to produce a new Total War game, then spam it with a bunch of "new and elite" units that you have to buy if you want to have any serious chance of winning multiplayer battles with other players who have bought them (evidently, they've adopted Bobby Kotick's sales and production models)- all the while promising their loyal following community editing tools and modding utilities which have yet to be released TWO YEARS after they were originally announced?
One thing that I still question is how the hell do people manage to leak a game?
Actually yeah I completely forgot about that. Unless someone puts in a new HDD, you're right, it's gonna fill up damn quick.
Well with a adapter cable you CAN hook up a 3,5" 2 Terabyte HDD to a PS3.
But it's not a pretty solution.
And if you see someone with that, you can easily guess how much they spend on PS3 games.
Pirates are people who have no intention on buying the game anyway, so really they don't affect sales in any way, they just use a copy that they can use freely.
There's plenty of people who plan on buying a game, and just like that it's on their favourite torrent site.
Wasn't there a study a year or two ago that showed that music pirates were something like four times as likely to purchase the music as opposed to non-pirates. Not really a study, but:

CryTek noticed that Activision Blizzard is selling Black Ops for 60$ for the PC and it did very well, so they thought "why not".
I've played Crysis 2. It was a lot better than I expected it to be. This experience has actually convinced me to buy it.
Next up: Skyrim

First one was awesome. Second is only better.
Hehehehe, a Playstation game "joins" the ranks of Crysis/Crysis 2.
That's a good one.
I don't see how the pirates have anything to do with this.
It is the person who leaked the files on the internet fault. No one else, the pirates didn't do shit but download the leak. They're really irrelevant to the whole situation surrounding the leak. It isn't like they're going to do any harm, most people with a brain know these are early releases and bugs are a given. Most people will purchase the games despite the leak. When the full game is out it will get put on torrent sites and people will download them, it is bound to happen. It isn't going to effect sales. They're not the only games to get leaked before, hell look at HL2. That game had a leak and look at it.

No, because they can quickly sort out and lynch the employee who leaked it unlike pirates which they are powerless to stop
What people forget about when going "oh god so many pirates" is that the people who pirate are a rather small group who are more active in pirating a game than a normal person is at buying one. So one pirated copy is not always equal to one copy not sold. Most of these people would not have bought the game in the first place.
Although I generally support people who pirate, I disagree with pirating a game before it comes out.
Although I generally support people who pirate, I disagree with pirating a game before it comes out.
Why? It makes no difference what so ever.
Its still copyright infringement.
Its still a "lost sale" if you believe that.
Its still "theft" if you believe that as well.
It is not any worse than pirating a released game, nor is it any better.
