What are we going to do? Fully synthesize hydrocarbons that we use for plastics? It's possible but unlikely to ever be practical.
We have to stop burning oil, it's the biggest waste of an amazing resource. For the environment and climate, and to save our source of hydrocarbons that we use for far more important things than fuel.
Read up on Synthetic Genomics, I hear they recently signed a deal worth 300 million dollars with Exxon Mobil to produce fully synthesized hydrocarbon fuels through genetically modified algae. And yes, the technology has already been developed.
$5 a gallon ~ $1/litre.
In the UK we're paying £1.20/litre. Meaning we pay the equivalent of $9/gallon.
Stop your bitching.

yeah but you dont have 300 million people to tend to and your dollar value is higher
plus we need gas for our columbian drug cartels
Please, don't mistake me for Obama.
Why can't we ban for stupidity anymore?
yeah but you dont have 300 million people to tend to and your dollar value is higher
What is that even supposed to mean?
Well guys, it looks like it's time to switch to a different fossil fuel, and cooler cars.

With all the double taxes we still pay more for everything then you Americans do.

I pray that you're just trying to sound uneducated.
"Your dollar value is higher"
He actually converted it into equal currencies to show the difference. What part of 5$ per gallon versus 9$ Per gallon don't you understand?
"Yeah but you don't have 300 million people to tend to"
Oh no, America only has 300 million people. The rest of the world, who pays more, has over 10 times that.
Don't even forget about the taxes that help out the poor, or as uneducated Americans call it: "SOCIALISM HURRRRRRRR"
he said the UK not the entirety of asia
jesus fuck
you want cheaper gas?
go over to the middle east and kill innocent people for it cause that seems to be going pretty damn well right now xD

it's gone up to £1.30 here, and i've even seen stations selling it for 1.40. fucking rediculous considering how we're being encouraged to use public transport instead which is even more expensive..
Glaber is probably one of the dumbest people I've ever met in my life, even over the internet. How the fuck can you trust talk show radio hosts over scientists who barely make money off what they do? Do you know how retarded your logic is? You'd get laughed out of anywhere if they ever took you seriously and found out how you get your info.

American exceptionalism is only exceptionally stupid.
This is why I refuse to get rid of my 4-Cylinder car.
We pay around 1200 USD every year to the community (about 30 houses in total) to fund trash collection, snow plowing and similar stuff. I don't think water is included as the bill is static.
If it's anything like how we do it here, water is included on the same bill as trash collection for some reason. I always assumed it was so you couldn't stop paying for trash collection and take your stuff to the dump yourself without losing your water, but maybe there's more to it.
The level of complaining around here is still much lower than in the US.
Because the spoiled US sees this rapid increase with fear: Most of the car models there take twice or even more the amount of gas compared to cars here in Europe - Because gas was cheap there and now it will become very expensive (how it is for us already)
Modern cars sold in Europe with an average to upper power of 80-150 hp take around 3-8 l/100 km - depending on if it's turbo loaded, using Diesel or Benzine etc etc.
Anyway, my point was we are complaining for a way longer time about gas-price now.

That works on the paper, but it will never fit humanity's demands of gas - Ever. Same for other "bio-diesel" or similar. One point is the waste of food in order to generate gas and the other is, we simply do not have enough land for letting the plants grow up to fit our demands. It's a nice idea but the conceptional problems deems it to be useless as a long-term solution.

Wow, 300 million. Even Germany has around 90 million right now so it only takes 3-4 European countries for the same amount of citizens. But we have more than only 4 countries in Europe with the same high price of gas, so don't think about the US being "so special".

The US is already doing this. We can't interfere and risk WWIII (despite the fact it isn't right to do this)
It's already 5$ a gallon anywhere but the US.
I was like, $5 per gallon? What's that in litres? Answer, ~$0.76/Litre :colbert:
Right now, it is $1.09/litre where I live.
why do i get the feeling gas companies are just making crap up to weasle us out of our money
why do i get the feeling gas companies are just making crap up to weasle us out of our money
Why do I get the feeling we shouldn't be using oil for fuel anymore?
Why do I get the feeling we shouldn't be using oil for fuel anymore?
Because it's true.
Oil company: "Huh, action time is over. We think many people now got used to the higher prices due to vacation time so let's just leave them that high"
Holy shit, this. They do this every single year here in Finland too. They increase fuel prices for the holidays/winter so people would be inspired to use public transportation or trains or something (that's the official story anyways), and the prices are supposed to be lowered after a few months but they never do! Same goes for heating/electric bills too..."Yeah, it's going to be a cold winter and people are consuming a lot of electricity so we are going to increase the prices a bit for a few months"....summer comes, prices stay up. Every. single. fucking. time.
why do i get the feeling gas companies are just making crap up to weasle us out of our money
because in part they may be, and in part, the Government is involved. (see the drilling moratorium)

It's not just an idea, they've already started production and if the worlds biggest corporation is willing to invest 300 million dollars into a joint venture with them, I think you should have some faith. On paper, it looks to be about 10 times more efficient than standard ethanol production.
And the best part is how you can modify these algae and bacteria to perform any function as long as there is a precedent in living biology. Like sucking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and using it to produce fuel.
because in part they may be, and in part, the Government is involved. (see the drilling moratorium)
Less than half of your oil is domestic
It could of been more if we didn't have that moratorium.
Where I live prices soar between 7 and 9 dollars per gallon.
It could of been more if we didn't have that moratorium.
Less than half of your gas was domestic before that as well

$300 million is nothing to a big oil company - but it makes them look good whilst they squeeze every dollar out of oil they can.
i say this alot, oil is impossible to fully replace
theres bound to be a major world collapse
Actually, if solar panels had a higher % efficiency, it isn't too difficult to store the energy in cells and/or use it to perform electrolysis of water. Not to mention nuclear energy, which if fusion were currently possible, would be a very clean source of energy with a virtually limitless fuel source.

Wind turbines and solar panels
Cover vast unused areas of the ocean with them
Fuck it, if gas prices gets any higher, then I'm installing a wood-gas generator in the trunk of my car :argh:
They take some time to start up, but that could probably be automated, and controlled with a timer.
