I don't usually say this, but... can it be the Year Of The Linux Desktop soon? Pretty please?
Linux has to actually be a good consumer product first. Which it fundamentally can't be, because the community developing it doesn't want that. They develop for people like themselves, and wonder why the general public doesn't get it. And that's not to mention all the incompatibilities that still haven't been ironed out, the completely different file structure, lack of unified support (the forums don't qualify), etc. Linux is a good thing, but it's not the best thing for everybody.
That's funny. I've been trying to force a Windows 10 update on system since not even getting the Windows 10 app automatically after the initial announcement and despite having a genuine Windows 7 pro, having the hardware that sure as hell exceeds the requirements, and supposedly having already reserved it after forcing the windows 10 app to show up, it still hasn't happened and it seems it never will in my specific case.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install Job done. I don't have it in english but the first option in the installer should be something like "Upgrade this PC now," that's the one you want.

I just find it rather suboptimal that Microsoft can do stupid things like this without having to fear any repercussions in the desktop market. Their biggest threat is people leaving that market entirely for mobile platforms.
What are they gonna do, steal my identity? It's not like I'm important anyway. Destroy my credit? I don't have any. Take my money? I have none of that either.
this is terrible reasoning for not having a secure pc
How do I delete the folder? It's sucking up 6 gigs of my precious SSD space.
Try hiding the "Upgrade to Windows 10" update? I've done so earlier, no folder on sight. Probably deleting the folder might help as well. I'm not too sure.
Wish I could get it but Windows 10 REALLY doesn't like my Graphics card
So does mine. Went for 3 days with a black screen that I gave up and went back to 7. Unless they could get 10 to work on my card, it's a no-go.
What are they gonna do, steal my identity? It's not like I'm important anyway. Destroy my credit? I don't have any. Take my money? I have none of that either.
its your choice if you want to fuck yourself over do you least have a backup?
its your choice if you want to fuck yourself over do you least have a backup?
No backups. No updates. No antivirus. I live on the edge and nothing will stop me.
No backups. No updates. No antivirus. I live on the edge and nothing will stop me.
You are remarkably stupid and I love it. Keep on being stupid, stupid man!
I'd be using 10 right now but it made my PC unusable.
I'm going to be totally honest, I don't see what the problem is. It automatically downloading if you have auto download updates enabled checks out. Windows Update is literally doing its job. Its motto is "I've got one job so fuck everything else". Which was literally the case in 7 until recently. :v:
No backups. No updates. No antivirus. I live on the edge and nothing will stop me.
your computer could become part of a huge botnet that is used to take down websites on a daily basis and you could very well be completely unaware of it because you chose to be willfully ignorant. malware does not solely affect you when you are infected.
With what? I've been using it since a month or so before release I have not found anything that is incompatible.

If you're holding out on 10 you're doing yourself a disservice, 10 is fast and compatible with 99% of things 7 and 8 are. I'm totally ok with Microsoft trying to rid the consumer world of old operating systems.
My troubles with the privacy concerns aside, it doesn't run right on any of the machines I have. It's fast, it's just got all sorts of memory leaks and the only solution the Windows fanboys have is "lol buy a better computer." Yeah, my current operating system runs A-OK without Windows 10 so I'm just going to keep the current OS and the current PC and say fuck you to anyone who doesn't like it. Plus I'm already making the switch to Linux one small step at a time, just finished cobbling together a junker desktop (go go gadget AMD 1.8GHz) to run some stuff and decided to install Debian on it.
I've noticed this, I only have a 120gb SSD and GTA V is taking up most of it, it leaves me with only 14gb of space left to manage, I noticed that the free space kept dropping to 10gb after turning the PC on for awhile because Windows felt the need to keep wasting my SSD's write cycles and space constantly downloading and failing to install windows 10 (that I never asked for) I finally got a clean install of Windows 10 so it doesn't affect me now but for people that don't want Windows 10 it's a right pain in the bum.

I have no idea how it happened, but it's running great now. I'd give it a few months, then give it another try, if you still want to use Windows. Most of the issues and incompatibilities should be ironed out by then.
Linux has to actually be a good consumer product first.
It is.
Which it fundamentally can't be, because the community developing it doesn't want that. They develop for people like themselves, and wonder why the general public doesn't get it.
Entire distros like Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, and OpenSUSE were all built on user-friendliness. You could use them without needing to touch the terminal. This would hold water if you're talking about something like Arch or Gentoo, but it is silly to think that is representative of Linux as a whole.
And that's not to mention all the incompatibilities that still haven't been ironed out
This is only the case because companies do not even attempt to develop for Linux because there are much fewer users than Windows. This would change if the Linux desktop became mainstream.
the completely different file structure,
Linux supports NTFS (which is shit, by the way) reading and writing, and native Linux filesystems like ext4 and btrfs are basically the best on the market right now.
lack of unified support (the forums don't qualify)
The forums are good enough for just about every problem you run into, especially Ubuntu's as that's the beginner demographic. I don't understand why you think forums don't qualify.
I don't feel like "upgrading" to Microsoft Snooping System 2015. The fact that they're forcing this so hard is only gonna piss people off.
Don't want to sound like a conspiritard but did people seriously forget about Microsoft relations with the NSA, specifically the PRISM program? Win10 definitely seems like it was tailor made to comply with the needs of said program, with all its 'telemetry' that can't be disabled even if the end user specifically tells the system not to send 'telemetry' back to MS. MS even went out of their way to hardcode access routes to their telemetry servers and prevent them from being blocked in hosts, you have to block all of that on your router and even then that's not guaranteed to work. I'm really not sure why anyone security or privacy conscious would even consider using Windows 10. In the end though it doesn't matter, because they retroactively added the telemetry stuff to Win7 and 8.1 via update, I'd seriously consider looking up how to remove them while you still can, before they integrate it too deeply to be removed.
You fucking cocksuckers. I have a 4 gigabyte internet plan and I was wondering why I'm at 10 gigs now. With $15 a gig every gig over the limit, Microsoft just fucked me of $90. Way to go cockslobers. I don't even have auto updates on. You god damn fucks.

And those are just the ones we know about. To a degree, it does not matter. Unless you are entirely self contained and not connected to the internet at all, the NSA will get your info if they want it. That is if what your saying has any element of truth to it, and it isn't just for usage analytics. [editline]11th September 2015[/editline]
You fucking cocksuckers. To say that user tracking is somehow OK and that it's fine because everyone does it and the NSA could just get whatever information they want anyway doesn't excuse Microsoft, nor is it a good mindset to have.

Just that saying "its PRISM" may be treading into scaremongering territory.
Fuck off MS. I don't want to use your useless upgrade system that does nothing but fuck things up, and I don't want to upgrade to your spyware OS.
http://think-squad.com/post/128800839680/microsoft-is-downloading-windows-10-to-your I've seen the files myself on 7 Pro…
While I have reserved a copy, I have not downloaded or planned to upgrade any time soon, yet my update history is also showing "Failed Upgrade to Windows 10"

They announced this at /build 2015, developers have been wanting this for a while, and people didn't care until news networks misinterpreted what it is. Fuck this fucking stupid 'botnet windows 10' shit, its entirely misattributed and isn't true.
Why the hell is everyone pointing fingers at Windows 10 stating its a botnet / spyware OS? I have seen nothing, absolutely nothing confirming this so far.
Yeaaah, I need to get a newer PC before installing 10, my computer won't be able to handle it.
With what? I've been using it since a month or so before release I have not found anything that is incompatible.
I haven't been able to use my USB3 ports at all since upgrading, the drivers just won't work.
Wow, it got salty in here real quick. I'll address the Linux thing later, but as a former fanboy myself, I really don't see any significant advantage in Linux other than price.
I think 7 is still fine for now. Its not as outdated as xp was. 7 is still a modern os
