Also considering that the Maori weren't indigenous. They colonized the land. They came over during the 1300s, Europeans came over during the 1600s. That's like calling the Saxons the indigenous people of Britain during the Norman invasion.
Indigenous also applies to the very first people to settle the land. I don't get why you think the Maori's aren't important. There aren't that many, but unlike most other countries, their culture was completely integrated into the english culture. Ditching their recognition would be like ditching recognition of african-americans. On the flag, I don't really like either of the flags. The second one's definitely somewhat better, but I've never been able to look at it the same way after someone pointed out that it looks like the Major League Baseball logo.
Looks like some sort of Major League Kiwi flag
See?!
This happens every fucking decade or so, fucks sake
Just make the entirety of this poster your flag.
What's wrong with the flag as of right now? Say what you want, but the Union Jack is pretty bitching when it comes to flag designs.
The problem really is is because people get confused between the Australian and New Zealand flag, I don't know how, they're entirely different but somehow people fuck up We both use the same blue and have the same union jack but the stars are different, we use white stars, they use red stars with a white outline. We also have one extra star there while they don't, but it's still the Southern Cross. We have a commonwealth star to represent the general Commonwealth, they don't because they favour the crown (which we do as well) Tbh the polls show not so much support for this so I doubt it'll change

I don't think it's entirely fair to make fun of people who get them mixed up because they are not 'entirely different'.
New Zealands population is only 15 percent Maori, I don't see the point in making them the face of international recognition. [editline]10th March 2014[/editline] 79 percent of the population has european descent. NAH LETS SAY FUCK THAT AND GO WITH THE FLAG OF THE MINORITY. It's as if the United states held a referendum on changing the stars and stripes to this.
new zealand culture is heavily entwined with maori culture. using maori symbolism isn't making 'them' the face [editline]11th March 2014[/editline]
The government likes to represent the Maori minority in every way they can, despite being only about 15% of the population. Literally every government/council/school related thing has a Maori translation available, despite literally only 4% of the country (out of 4.4million) can speak the language to any degree of fluency. Considering anything the government puts anywhere is plastered with graphics of native New Zealand plants or birds, as well as the frankly blatant affirmative action Maoris have, I'm going to be a bit of a wingnut and say that the New Zealand government is trying as desperately as possible to distance themselves from their European history.
you need to grow up. god forbid you have to coexist with a culture you only don't identify with because you're pakeha or something. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] also lmao at you buying into that moriori bullshit, question: do you have 'the pakeha party' liked on facebook?

Billy T. on the flag or bust.
Current flags fine.
The current flag looks very similar to Australia's flag.
Current flags fine.
are you even remotely tied to New Zealand
Why don't they just make a contest out of designing the flag, like Canada did back in the 80's?
are you even remotely tied to new Zealand
I think he visited with the band decades ago
Honestly I'm surprised we don't have a design with the pohutukawa on it. I'd consider that much more iconic than the fern. Though I do love that second design.
The leaf looks hard as fuck for grade twos to draw at school.
Current flags fine.
we'll be sure to take your opinion into consideration
Maybe they should be entitled to be governed in their own language because their country was invaded and subjugated.
What country wasn't
Also, Cuba Puerto Rico.
Which one is the Flag of Romania and which one is the Flag of Chad?
The leaf looks hard as fuck for grade twos to draw at school.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who judges flags by this quality. Literally the only criteria for being a good flag to me is that it should be easy to draw by hand. Also no black. I don't like black on flags.
You get this if you have black on flags.
Paul McCartney beat me to it. I know it's dumb, but it reminds me too much of the black Jihad flag.

Both possible variants are horrible imo. They look like a logo for some food company. Especially the first one, which is also grim as hell. I don't know if it's a big problem that their flag is quite similar to Australia's one, but at least their current flag looks way better then both of those in the OP.
They've got the same issue as us because, we can't figure out what truly represents us In Australia, people proposed using a Kangaroo but the problem is, all designs for the Kangaroo silhouette is the same design as Qantas's logo, all we have really is the southern cross and commonwealth stars And tbh the Union Jack makes it look heaps better, for both Aus and NZ [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] There's also a lot of potential that this flag referendum is going to restart the flag change argument over here, so good fucking work New Zealand, it was quite peaceful but now it's going to be a shit storm of news programs trying to find our fucking identity
Flag isn't going to change (we know this because of all the constant media surveys about it), and all the designs are either too tacky or too maori for everyone here. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] John Key is also desperately trying to grapple everything on the table to make sure he can squeeze the votes out. His government doesn't really care about the flag.
It reminds me of the generic rebel black flags from Empire Total War.
please
All I know is the first design was used as the flag for a fascist New Zealand in Victoria 2.
I swear this thread is almost a carbon copy, post for post, of a thread on the exact same topic about a month or two back.. Found it! http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1356390
