Maybe it's just me but they both look like flags for like a football team or something instead of a nation's.

The Union Jack in Australia/New Zealand's flag looks copied and pasted.
At the least, get rid of that or make it look less out of place.
Honestly a larger fan of the first than the second.

This was the old flag, now known as the "Red Ensign":

That's because the first design actually is a sports flag.
You show that design to anyone in New Zealand and they'll recognise it as the flag of at least five different national teams.
It's part of the reason they want to make it the national flag at all. Because if there's three things New Zealand is known for, it's agriculture, hobbits and that flag in a sports stadium.

It doesn't sit well with me as a New Zealander because in NZ, that specific image (a white or silver fern on a black field) is probably the most famous logo in New Zealand: the logo of the All Blacks, our national Rugby team.
