Memoribility and Symbolicness.

Take the new mexico flag for example:

This flag tells more about it's state with less, First it tells of its spanish colonial history with it's colors, while those colors represent how hot and sunny the state is. The symbol is of the zia natives of the state while doubling as a symbol for the sun.

Basically looking memorable and being able to tell more about what it represents with less is regarded highly among vexillologists.

if they wanted to add some maori design in it why not put it in the centre of the southern cross or something? maybe I'm biased because I really like nz's current flag, it looks and functions perfectly fine.

I'm glad we got rid of the Red Ensign. While Britain was our mother country at one point, and we share the same Monarch, we're fully independent. Getting rid of any British symbols in the flag shows that.
