I'm not trying to make a solid point, just disagreeing with the statement "Maybe people that smoke weed just generally have a lower IQ" - That in itself is faulty and it just doesn't correlate. I'm not saying that everyone who smokes weed is a genius/weed makes you smart. I just don't think it's fair to stereotype.
Yes, but you shouldn't argue against an illogical premise with your own untenable evidence.
that might be because their brain began to associate being high with creating. it's like if someone studies on amphetamines, they need to take the test on amphetamines to be able to fully recall the information.
i've never personally been creative on marijuana. at least, not moreso than being sober.
I know that when I'm high or drunk I write more proficiently and link story beats together in a stronger fashion than when I'm sober
but I know people like you who smoke or drink and don't terribly get anymore "creative" than their normal selves. my point exactly.
he often talked about mushrooms and types of weeds and tobaccos but never really seen any evidence to support he was into cannabis

It's a lot better than the kidney rotting painkillers dentists give you now???
well look at history, some of the greatest musicians were from the 60s through the 80s when drugs were the shit, if it werent for marijuana, for example, the rock n roll age would be way more dull.
That's an assumption bud.
How do I logic?

Wasn't there recently a study that said that there might be some grounds to the "Balmer Peak" joke?
Wasn't there recently a study that said that there might be some grounds to the "Balmer Peak" joke?
yes, I remember skimming through it.
Drugs. Effect. Everyone. Differently. No two people are the same or effected by all drugs or substances the same. The effects vary greatly between people.
That's the limit of this argument. Seriously.

Here is what I was talking about but like all good journalists they make it difficult to find the actual study so fuck it.

The effects of most drugs are pretty standard on everyone, unless you can show me evidence to the contrary. What you take from the experience is what I'd say differs the most and it also depends on the drug.
There is a lot of research which suggests that marijuana affects people predisposed to schizophrenia differently, but that's about all that I'm aware of.

i think he's referring to the whole, some people feeling more creative when they're stoned and others not.

the way it effects people is standardized in a physical sense to a degree, but mentally I really think people's mental states will change the end result of drugs and their effects on those people.
i think he's referring to the whole, some people feeling more creative when they're stoned and others not.
I also think he meant that when some people get drunk they act loud and beligerent and others become quiet and withdrawn, for example.
I want to know more information about the people that they said smoked and did worse on the tests.
I live in the city that the original study was done in, and there are areas here that house a lot of lower income families and also have a higher gang/drug dealer presence than most other areas here. (The sort of place you don't want to be passing through at night)
I feel as if they left these details out intentionally to make their study seem more valid.
the way it effects people is standardized in a physical sense to a degree, but mentally I really think people's mental states will change the end result of drugs and their effects on those people.
okay, agreed.
okay, agreed.
Yeah, I should have clarified that initially

well drugs will cause certain things, but the subjective experience differs greatly from person to person depending on their own personality and life experiences.
it's why one person might love drinking and another might just feel sick from it.

It's kind of funny how some pro-weed posters start high fiving without reading the article and miss this little gem:
However, Professor Poulton said that when looking at children from middle-class homes, the findings of a decline in IQ in adolescent-onset cannabis users remained unaltered.
So in other words, no, the study has not been overturned or rendered invalid, there's just a little more data and a little more specificity, but the study still does indicate a loss of IQ directly correlated with cannabis use.
Whether that means weed makes you dumb or is a misleading correlation without causation due to some additional factor remains to be determined, but good god you should read the actual article (it's not hard) before leaping to conclusions.

No the real problem is people read the article/headline and never bother looking into the study
When the previous study was posted some people rabidly defended cannabis and based their stupid opinion entirely off the BBC article and tried to defend uncertainties that way... even after graphs of the study itself were presented.
One of my friends smokes weed everyday, she makes all A's and B's in college and is in no way stupid. Some people are dumb and smoke weed, some people are smart and smoke weed.

Anecdotal evidence about outliers doesn't say anything about a drug's effects
Also funny how you miss this "little gem" that literally is right after the sentence you posted.
Many of the adolescent cannabis users in the [New Zealand] study were from slightly lower socio-economic homes, though not all.
you don't know what you're doing, do you?

That isn't evidence that it's not/is harmful.
IQ is the best test for determining aptitude at taking IQ tests
It's unsurprising that pot would not affect your score in a test that does a better job of determining your socioeconomic background than your intelligence

Anything that alters the chemical state of your brain is harmful, I am just saying that some people can be smart and enjoy weed everyday. I know a lot of people who smoke pot who do pretty well in school.

That's exactly why it's meaningless anecdotal with no relevance to the discussion of a scientific study
