• Valve to show off new game/experience at VR Showcase (Jan 28th)

If this is just a "content showcase", it's almost definitely going to be that Portal 2 VR demo where you rebuilt the robot guy (from a year ago I think?). It would show off Vive without having to develop a brand new demo, the Portal 2 one still hasn't been publicly released afaik. Best video I could find:
Happening?
Valve doesn't create games anymore, they get others to do it. Which is interesting because they are suppose to hire the best in the industry which raises the question of what do they do with their time?

[editline]PostalIsTheImpostor[/editline] It actually blows my mind by how wrong you are. Like, basic fact checking is somehow an impossible feat.
Hopefully its Team Fortress 3 with more hats than ever.

See Valve didnt actually make it. They hired people who then made the product while working at Valve, with other Valve employees, overseen by Valve. See Valve just takes all the credit for their employees work, the people who work at Valve who make Valves products.
a new dod would be fuckin amazing
a new dod would be fuckin amazing
Yeah make it Wehrmacht vs British Army so they don't have to worry about trying to balance the M1 Garand vs the Kar 98 and end up making the Garand total shit. The British Army has more in common with the German Army anyway because both were based around the same weapons, while the Americans decided to be the odd-dog and base around the soldier.
Ooo this is interesting. Hopefully it's a new game!
Ooo this is interesting. Hopefully it's a new game!
b-but i thought valve doesn't make games :( [editline]17th January 2016[/editline] my brain is going in circles please stop partaking in the spinning of it :saddowns:

Yeah, there's nothing to unveil about the Aperture demo. If they indeed show something new, it's more than likely going to be a new tech demo or maybe the VR spectator for Dota which has been talked about. Not holding breath for something significant.
virtual steam sale arg experience pretty sure its not aperture demo. they are done with it.
The only way they'll show of the aperture demo again is if they're expanding it or some shit.
Still. I can't wait to see this VR Demo for myself because the amount of minor details they've placed into this project is very high and i can only hope that it will set the trend for the industry.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if it WAS hl3, valve really wants VR to take off and releasing the new half life game with it would be a surefire way to do that.
Limiting a game known for running and gunning at high speeds to room scale VR would be the dumbest thing Valve can do with the franchise
Limiting a game known for running and gunning at high speeds to room scale VR would be the dumbest thing Valve can do with the franchise
You do realize that moving around the room is not the only way to move about while using the Vive, right?
imagine if it is a half life tech demo, not a game, but a tech demo [editline]17th January 2016[/editline] also do we know when source 2 is coming out?
Have people really not learned anything from the latest "ARG"?
Even Ricochet 2 would get me excited if it was Source 2 and also an actual commercial game instead of a tech demo.
Valve doesn't create games anymore, they get others to do it. Which is interesting because they are suppose to hire the best in the industry which raises the question of what do they do with their time?
Valve in 2010: "Oh hey guys, we don't make games anymore so let's work on Source 2 for five years straight! We need a new engine for the 0 games we plan to make with it!"
imagine if it is a half life tech demo, not a game, but a tech demo
Imagine if they had done that with Source originally in like, 2003 at E3.
also do we know when source 2 is coming out?
Technically Valve already considers it to be out with Dota. But as far as the proper SDK goes, no idea. Wouldn't surprise me if they waited for Vulkan to be out first. Maybe we'll hear something at GDC.
They should have outright stated "This isn't a Half Life entry" if it wasn't, Valve is going to have a lot of upset people if it's a port of Portal or a new L4D
We honestly shouldn't pay any attention to Valve if they don't make something we actually want, so they stop fucking with their fanbase. No HL3/L4D3/Portal 3, Valve? Then no customers.
You do realize that moving around the room is not the only way to move about while using the Vive, right?
This was said back in December by Valve's Ken Birdwell:
If players actually did all of the actions from Half-Life in VR, they’d be fatigued in five minutes. It doesn’t mean we can’t use that fiction; we just have to figure out a new way to approach it.
Source I'm not saying the new VR experience can't be related to HL, but it's certainly not HL3.

Its just saying that you can't do absolutely everything, not that VR HAS to handle everything.
it's probably just gonna be another tech demo lol. but of course people are still gonna expect the most and then collectively fly into a rage come the 28th anyways.
And people are gonna be smartasses about it as if it wasn't obvious
Imagine if they had done that with Source originally in like, 2003 at E3.
they did use half life 2 as a tech demo, as in the full game
That says all of... fuck all to support your argument? Its just saying that you can't do absolutely everything, not that VR HAS to handle everything.
How does it not support it? It's very tiring for players to play a VR game like HL where you run around and shoot stuff. It would be very dumb to make a game where you have to take a break every 5 minutes so that your lungs don't explode. I'm aware that there are mechanics such as Teleporting and playing with scale in VR, and of course you can make an HL experience with them, but you can't just make a traditional Half-Life in VR. I'm not even talking about playing with a KB+M / Controller scheme while seated because it causes a lot of nausea to people prone to motion sickness, and it makes VR more of a 3D gimmick rather than a new way to experience games.
