Fukushima Has Leaked 168 Hiroshima Blasts of Radiation

govenment keep blotting information in main media and tell people stay calm but we no know
bad becuse japan people see world by media too much
Oh really, 168 times the 40's Hiroshima bombing?
That's just a stupid comparison. Because if you blow up 168 modern a-bombs, there wouldn't be anything left of our planet.
You would need trillions of nukes to destroy a planet.
You would need trillions of nukes to destroy a planet.
If you mean in the most literal since of the word, then yeah.
That's shocking. And I was one of these people saying it wouldn't be this bad...
Well I guess lessons were learnt, it's still not a reason to abandon nuclear power, *cough* Germany *cough*

You don't need to be within the "complete destruction zone" to die. This chart is flawed in so many ways I don't know why you would even post it.
I don't even get why anyone in this thread is talking about power and energy. This has NOTHING to do with power or energy, it's radioactive material. Atomic bombs are designed to release as little material as possible to minimize the nuclear fallout, so of course a leaking nuclear reactor is going to release a relatively high amount of radiation.

BAD READING WHERE ARE YOU!?

contrast: if you detonate one nuclear weapon you'll have violated a dozen treaties and would have a hundred countries declare war on you

Civilisation
We're talking about weapons here. Power is more important.
Uh, no. Drop a bomb with twice the yield of the Tsar Bomb released in twice the time and tell me it's not stronger than the Tsar Bomb.
In fact this is what other posters here have pointed out in reference to Fukushima leaking out 168 nukes worth of radiation. It wasn't destructive. Why? Because energy was leaked out slowly, thus lack of power.
Please tell me you don't honestly think a nuclear weapon's explosive power comes in the form of ionizing radiation.
Uh, no. Drop a bomb with twice the yield of the Tsar Bomb released in twice the time and tell me it's not stronger than the Tsar Bomb.
The bomb would be stronger, right?
Horrible. Hopefully this doesn't fuck with the world's climate too much.
The bomb would be stronger, right?
Yes.
Believe it or not having an extra 50 megatons TNT equivalent of energy is a lot more important than having that energy dispersed 39 nanoseconds faster.
That is .000000039 seconds, by the way.
contrast: if you detonate one nuclear weapon you'll have violated a dozen treaties and would have a hundred countries declare war on you
detonate more and there will be no one to declare war

But watching Dr Strangelove tells me radiation would linger into the clouds and kill BILLIONS. :)
Slightly annoying how in the article, government officials said the comparison isn't legitimate, and anyone with common sense could see it's really just sensationalizing a figure, yet gizmodo and the telegraph both fucking make it.
Well it didn't get thrown all over the place, like a nuke. Most of it was spilled into the sea, meaning it'll thin out.

-snip- for retardation.
Wait the bomb dropped on hiroshima was around 15 kilotons, do we honestly not have nukes in service stronger than that? Were all the multi-megaton bombs decommissioned after the cold war?
what
did you actually read it
This is frustrating news.
A deadly leak that's seeped into the earth, water, food, and urine of Japan.
Fucking hide the urine.
Hate to say it but this is such hyperbole i'm amazed it made it to FP without being shot down.
The amount of radiation is insignificant when you realize it's been expelled over a longer period of time than hiroshima, Fallout from a nuclear blast travels much faster and is delivered much faster. This hardly affects anyone not within a 2-ish mile radius. Unless it's irradiating dust and shit in which case hoo boy.

I believe radioactive fallout seeps into the groundwater which then dissapates and re-emerges as Black Rain. Probably some other residual atmospheric radiation that causes it but that's my understanding. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I reckon you'd get irradiated more by sticking your bollocks in a microwave than being anywhere except within a 100 mile radius of the reactor.
[editline]27th August 2011[/editline]
Japanese government and hospital workers conducted the study, which found radioactive levels of up to 3 millisieverts residents' urine up to 25 miles away from the reactor, stemming from both damaging cesium and iodine isotopes. "This won't be a problem if they don't eat vegetables or other products that are contaminated," said a professor from Hiroshima University. So, in other words, it won't be a problem for the residents of Fukushima if they stop living in Fukushima.
I bet i piss more radiation after swilling Coke than that.

noshutup.
Chernobyl is more of a worry because it's been doing nothing but irradiating more dust and shite aswell as all the dust and shite that's already inside it and if it collapses it will send dust and shite into the air irradiating the whole area(and more) over and over again.
STALKER does not qualify you to talk about chernobyl nimrod.

I'm comfortable with the maintenance they're keeping on Chernobyl. The plant isn't completely abandoned like so many people think. And I could've sworn parts of it are still running or they are working on getting it running or something.
yes i know i'm just saying that's the worry of the sarcophagus collapsing/why it's necessary. this is not that much of a worry.

shortterm that is, longterm the groundwater in japan is gonna be fu-huuucked

Calm down. It was a joke. Sheesh
And I suppose you're all qualified to talk about it how?
And yet coal kills far more people every year from cave-ins and mine explosions. Not to mention black lung and all those other fun diseases that come from burning coal!

I based my knowledge on radioactive doomsday on a movie. Remember that. :)
