Because there was a half dozen or so subreddits that had people that shared CP, and those all got shut down so now everybody here hates reddit because of the two worst sections of reddit: the now long gone pedos (that are still infesting 4chan's /b/) and the shitty comedy/pictures one.
The problem was that Reddit's mod team knew about the CP boards and actively did nothing to get rid of them, it wasn't until SA got involved that anything really happened. Even then it took a lot of 'convincing' to urge the Reddit crew to do anything. 4chan atleast bans child porn on sight and the community tends to self moderate by spamming and saging CP threads.
Sometimes I wonder why I even browse Facepunch.
imo, it's the only forum that I can tolerate every other forum has image macros spammed everywhere, "xD, lol, trololol" roflmalocoptor" as responses, super self righteous right wingers who think whites are discriminated, etc. I know you see that here sometimes too, but on other forums it's agreed upon and accepted, and much more common. [editline]17th May 2012[/editline] I like how the moderators here ban people for everything, unlike other forums where the only way to be banned is flaming, cursing/censor bypass, and posting a picture of a woman *gasp* showing a little bit of her breasts
Isn't the owner of 4chan constantly on the verge of bankruptcy because of how little cash the site makes, or was that a rumor?
Not really, investors/advertisers are practically jockeying with each other for ad space there because of 4chan's enormous user base, one of the largest of any website in the world. Such a large audience is irresistible to advertisers , regardless of any potential stigma associated with said users.
All saging does is make your comment not bump the thread, it doesnt make the thread dissapear any faster than if you didnt comment anything
If you push the thread to its image limit while not bumping it you effectively kill it. It either 404s or gets deleted by a mod/janitor after that. And that's if the afformetioned mod or janitor didn't already shut down the thread.
Isn't the owner of 4chan constantly on the verge of bankruptcy because of how little cash the site makes, or was that a rumor?
until around 2008 that was the case. moot is fine now. also Google has been toying with buying 4chan for ages but they keep coming to their senses. [editline]17th May 2012[/editline]
imo, it's the only forum that I can tolerate every other forum has image macros spammed everywhere, "xD, lol, trololol" roflmalocoptor" as responses, super self righteous right wingers who think whites are discriminated, etc. I know you see that here sometimes too, but on other forums it's agreed upon and accepted, and much more common. If the average age is 30 or higher there's a good chance that the content is well above the quality we've got.
Moot would never allow it.
He's been apathetic and willing to offload for years. He's also an idiot who genuinely thinks it's worth far more than it is, which is why it hasn't been sold. But it's not being bought so it's a moot point.
Have you ever even been anywhere that isn't /b/? The other boards can often have some quite entertaining discussions.
Like /tg/ with it's Monk and the Luchador stories.
I would love to see 4chan shut down. Not because I hate the site, but just to see the mass chaos the internet will endure. Thousands of 4chan refugees will flock to Fark, SA, Facepunch, 9Gag, and Reddit; and they will turn those sites into what 4chan used to be before Google turned it into an extension of the Youtube comments section.
lol moot hates his own community anyway. He does have another site anyway. Can.Vas, though it's not 4chan related.
You know, if 4chan was ever acquired by a giant company like Google, Google would probably end up selling the browsing information of the users? Advertising is the bread and butter of Google's business, and that's the only financially viable reason for acquiring "a large user base". Basically, the novel relative anonymity of 4chan would be completely fragmented
I hate all you guys who just hate on other forums because either you don't understand how they work or its just plain xenophobia. In Reddit, its not like here or SA where the moderators create new forums. The community creates their own subreddits, and when pedos got on there they created pedo subreddits. Those got shut down, and there are hundreds of other subreddits and dozens of good ones. Hell, even the post above yours said to not just judge a site based on one section. How would you react if all of FP you knew about was the OIFY?
this isn't why redditt is bad at all it's the upvote system that creates a giant circlejerk. (like ratings on facepunch)
He's also an idiot who genuinely thinks it's worth far more than it is, which is why it hasn't been sold.
Or maybe it's because he doesn't want to sell it. Maybe he doesn't want to watch the community he made wither and die because some other company tried to monetize it. Maybe he likes being able to use it the way it is and doesn't want there to be a thousand ads and user's information being sold.
You do realize that 4chan records poster IP addresses etc, and will provide them to police if required
There's a difference between providing required information to law enforcement when they ask for it, and selling information to companies who want to advertise their shit.
I poked around in 4chan's different boards on some occasions and oh god the moment you actually look at the text instead of the pictures you realize what a stinking shithole that place is. /tg/ stood out to me as an occasional exception, but even there tons of creepy people forge plans on how to bang the first female NPC they encounter ASAP for no apparent reason other than the obvious. The average standard of a board there seems to be LMAO pics here, that should tell you a lot. I'm glad it exists tho, otherwise these people would spread to other sites. Eeew.
Crunchyroll claims they're more superior then somethingawful and 4chan. But that's old news. Though 7chan might be better, either way, it's still crap.
lol moot hates his own community anyway. He does have another site anyway. Can.Vas, though it's not 4chan related.
He doesn't hate his community, he's an active member. I saw a thread recently on 4chan where moot talked to the community. He said that he doesn't visit other communities much because he simply likes 4chan, he's said that he browses regularly and that he often takes part in threads anonymously like everyone else. [editline]18th May 2012[/editline]
The average standard of a board there seems to be LMAO pics here, that should tell you a lot.
I disagree with that. Yes, some thread are all about just posting funny pictures, but most of the times pictures are just used in the same way emotes are used on other forums. I personally like /co/ and /v/. Now if you get past the whole "/v/ is stupid because they hate everything", you realize that they're still a very good source of information and discussion of games. /v/ almost always have interesting discussions of the latest games released/about to be released, they have nostalgic threads about things in games they miss, threads detailing things you had not noticed before in games, or talk about strategies in games. If you start treating offensive language like "fuck you", "faggot", "nigger", "cunt", "asshole" etc as nothing more than lingo that doesn't mean anything, you realize that there's plenty of interesting discussions going on in /v/. /co/'s community is like a less competitive version of /v/, they aren't as concerned about telling other users why the thing they like sucks. There's plenty of interesting discussions about super hero movies, discussions about 90's cartoons, discussions about modern day adult cartoons, discussions about improving on your drawing, discussions about famous comic writers, and of course discussions about comic books. They often have pretty common interests with the kind of people that visits /v/, since like most of the population of /v/ they're nerds who grew up in the 90's. I personally never get why people live /tg/ so much, then again I've never been a big fan of dungeons and dragons/warhammer 40k and other such roleplaying and board games. That section is extremely hard to get into if you don't have a solid interest for it before you visit.
@Simski Of course, you're right. I have seen him ask people in London to have lunch with him and discuss whatever. Most /b/tards are alright, some just insane.
this isn't why redditt is bad at all it's the upvote system that creates a giant circlejerk. (like ratings on facepunch)
Just like how people were ratings whoring back in the days here. And then Garry removed the ratings stats for each user. Gotta say, It's one of the changes I greatly appreciated.
literally every single message board and forum on the internet is awful quit trying to act superior to other people
Yeah, every forum is awful, only because you get bad mo- BANNED.
I personally like /co/ and /v/.
almost everyone here judges 4chan because of /b/ the other boards are all fine
/d/ [sp]and /mlp/[/sp] I honestly doubt we'd ever see anyone buy 4chan unless they made moot the richest man on earth.
Google must like dickgirls then.
Why would they even think of having the notion of having a thought of Google buying 4chan? Even if they made this purely for views? Honestly you'd have to have a mental deficiency to even write up something like this. Kinda surprised at the defending of 4chan in here, last I checked most of Facepunch hated the whole site like it was a virus slowly killing humanity, and acted like the only board on there was /b/.
yeah this would be totally brilliant just imagine it: all the videos you watch on youtube (which is probably the majority of the videos you watch on the internet), social networking stuff that has all your details, your personal email and your 4chan posts conveniently and forever linked in one google account wouldn't that be just amazing [editline]18th May 2012[/editline] 4chan+
Moot would never allow it.
Money is a powerful thing.
Google buying 4chan? That's like the worst thing that could happen. 4chan is like one of the only places of freedom left on the net? Reddit, 9gag, FunnkyJunk, Memebase? Yeah Google go ahead
I don't know, google did pretty good with youtube. They would probably just ban porn threads.
Buy it then delete it. Do it for the Internet, google
I hope they do, and shut it down.
Yeah, it's not like 95% of the content on the internet comes from 4chan or anything silly like that.
