Origin really isn't that bad. It's still in infancy compared to Steam (it's basically EADM, but most of it is from scratch as EADM was literally a downloader). It's going to be buggy, it's going to have faults, Steam still has crashes and faults to this day. If you don't report them they won't get looked at. The only real problem with Origin is the lack of variety in games. Thankfully, this could fix it, and release the stranglehold Valve have over Digital Distribution (as nice as Steam and Steamworks is, I would prefer a less restrictive DRM on certain games, having to start Steam just to check something in a game before I go is a pain, Steam takes fucking ages to start still).
There is no reason to blindly bash Origin any more, it's actually a viable service. And contrary to popular belief, Valve don't care about us as much as you think, we are still consumers, they just have more flexibility to cater to us compared to EA, so we can see things we want happen, happen faster.
Steamworks actually offers features that benefit both the consumer, EA forces Origin solely because they can.

This article is fair and balanced :v:

I am well aware of the benefits to Steamworks, but not all games actually use Steamworks past syncing savedata and DRM. While it is a nice system, it's still a pain in the ass, because sometimes, I just don't want to start Steam to test one little thing in a game. Maybe if Steam started faster I wouldn't mind it as much, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

Personally I always have Steam running so that isn't an issue I've ever had. I honestly don't see why you wouldn't unless you're in dire need of more ram.
I ended up uninstalling origin since I didn't have BF3 and was never going to use that shit ever again. Quite frankly I'd be happier of steam had a monopoly so I don't have to install and new fucking digital distributor every time I buy a new game.

I don't always run Steam on my laptop here because I tend to forget, plus it adds a bit to the startup time. At home I don't have it autostarting either, but the fact I don't have it running doesn't really apply here. Once I do start it, I leave it running. It's just a pain in the ass to have to start it to test one little thing.
Thank god you're here EA, those sadistic fucks at Valve were torturing us with weekly 50%+ off sales, seamless game integrated networking, and a colossal selection of AAA and indie titles. Now that we have Origin we can pay full price for two dozen EA games and also Dead Rising 2, be forced into using anti-cheat software that was bad when it was new and ostensibly hasn't updated its website since 1996, and be thrown out of game servers because, and I quote, "1".
The problem with Origin isn't that EA are evil cocksucking goblin motherfuckers, or that their server network is broken as fuck, or that they release games months before they're done that have controls fucking hard coded to a keyboard button as though the player were using a goddamned Xbox controller, though all that's true, but that it is completely unnecessary, and inferior in every conceivable way to alternative services that we already have.
Er..The same reasoning can be applied to Steam. Any game that uses steamworks forces you to sign up for Steam. Just sayin'.
But there's a difference
Steam is an established leader and not having your games on it just inconveniences people
It's like iTunes, if you're a major musician everyone expects you to have your songs on iTunes, it'd annoy the hell out of everybody if you told them they had to download a new program to get your songs
My games download faster on Origin than Steam, so I use Origin when I can. Also, I usually just buy games from Cd-key sites, and just redeem them on either service...

Holy shit, you take this shit so seriously calm down
I may not like EA's buisness practices, but it's good to see that steam's dangerous monopoly on digitally downloaded games is getting some competition.
You're talking like Steam was a bad service, and they also weren't a monopoly.
1. Steam is a great service with huge discounts and a lot of awesome developers.
2. There was also D2D, Sony's Digital Distribution site, and several others.
Steam has some competition now, time for them to step up their game one more time.
Steam has some competition now, time for them to step up their game one more time.
Why? Steam is still better in so many ways. So are the games Valve release, and all the games supported by Steam.
So far for me, Origin has proven to be un-comparable to Steam. Why can't I remove the BF3 beta from my account? Why is it still there after being stopped almost 3 or 4 months ago? Why aren't games made before 2008 supported by Origin, and require the CD-Key to be entered through a special website, BF2 for example, I had to go through a lot of shit to actually get it to work, even after I got it to show up after being told it should take no longer than 24 hours to show, 4 days before it actually showed. Then when I proceeded to launch it, I was subdued again by another error; "CD Key is Invalid".
Why didn't they just keep it simple, and organised by keeping to Steam?
It's like saying Floppy Disks offer competition to Blu-Ray & DVDs
Everyone forgot about the controversy around the fact Origin takes a free look at all your files 24/7 and gives it away to 3rd parties.
This is a fake competition as long as Origin relies on exclusive titles. If Battlefield 3 never goes on Steam, but is only available on Origin, there is no competition or choice for the customer, they have to get it on Origin.

Oh no, my college work and random unity scripts/models whatever shall I do.
But seriously, it's stupid that this actually happens. Does Origin still do it now?

Seemingly Origin's only unnecessary foray into your files happens when it scans the ProgramData folder in its entirety, including completely pointless files like icons. I read a report where someone had monitored its activities, and later checked myself and got the same results. I don't know why it does that, possibly to find its own files but it's bizarre it would access the whole folder and its contents, and considering what a hit-or-miss way of scanning for copyright-infringing content that would be, I can't see that being the motivation.

As far as I've looked upon this theme it was actually quietly changed. It now stays inside of the Origin folder, even though it curiously checks Steam when you get a game like Kingdoms of Amalur.

Well, Origin just starts to download some additional language files then. You can even start KoA without Steam once Origin added it to it's own list. So it's somewhat cooperating, even though I have to question why it has permission to add files to the steam directory.
Why does everyone have a bitchfest when they hear Origin? Just don't use it if you don't like it!
Everyone forgot about the controversy around the fact Origin takes a free look at all your files 24/7 and gives it away to 3rd parties.
That was disproved
VAC, however, we still don't know what exactly it does because Valve refuses to say

Programs usually aren't blocked from adding data to the directories of other programs. It takes creating a new user, or adjusting the current users security to affect what folders can and cannot be written to. And I wouldn't expect to see developers creating a unique user for every application just to block some other developer looking in the folder, and changing the current users clearance would be counter-productive.
Origin is quite co-operative. It picks up any games it supports, even if you don't register them in origin itself, as long as your Origin account registered it, a standalone game can show up in Origin, my BC2 did for instance. It doesn't go out of it's way to remind you it's there, it doesn't conflict with other applications. It's actually quite a nice minimal distribution service. It doesn't seem to be trying to be Steam, EA know it can't be. But it's at least trying to be a decent platform.
Nice to see some competition for steam, but their programs annoy the shit out of me.

Makes sense, indeed. Yet I see that Origin is pretty okay, has improved at least. I am still somewhat negative towards it and will wait until I install something.
EA should stop thinking the wrong way, turning the customers to their side can be their future just like Valve.
Right now they're fucking assholes
All Valve is gonna do is chortle in Origin's face, then do another 75% off deal on all their games.
Why does everyone have a bitchfest when they hear Origin? Just don't use it if you don't like it!
Because people like and want to use the games that are exclusive to it, but don't want to be forced to use it.

Sorry but an SP only game that has steam even in it's retail mutation is merely an inconvenience to the user.
