Everyone in Norway is now a theoretical millionaire

Norway doesn't have a minimum wage, because we don't need one.
In Sweden there's no minimum wage because labour unions make sure that everyone is paid a fair amount, I imagine it's similar in Norway.

Huh? We just throw money at people and they do stuff.
Man Norway is doing it right.
They aren't only drilling there, I see the Norway owned Statoil out here in North Dakota, I kind of want to work for them.
What happens when the oil runs out though
Norway begins a very slow slide into obscurity and economic marginalization that ends up with them becoming a part of the European state.
You can do just about whatever the hell you want when you're sitting on massive deposits of oil.
You can have tons of oil and tons of poverty and debt too.
You better hurry up and sell all those oil drilling rights to China like we did
It's why we're so prosperous and Norway is suffering

can someone just put canada out of its misery please
But... but... they're the conservatives! Aren't they fiscally responsible? I mean, that's what they've been telling us for years, right? Nothing could possibly go wrong with them in charge! I mean, can you IMAGINE the Liberals or NDP handling money? -I- shudder to think about it!
[sp]Seriously, someone please end it all.[/sp]

Only if you have massive amounts of corruption and/or a dictatorial governmental system that has no dependance on it's people (aka. the middle east).

To be honest when the oil does run out I doubt Norway joining the EU is what we have to worry about.
I think we'll be more worried about all the big countries desperately clinging to their diminishing supplies and the financial implications that losing the major fuel and base-material of pretty much everything will have.
Then again Thorium power might become big and then Norway is back in business baby!
I've visited Norway 5 times before since my S/O is Norwegian, and in my experience everything works stupidly well over there.
Like every single service we've had to use, and in my bf's case he's receiving financial support from the state to be able to finish his studies/pay rent at the same time and they're super cool about it.
Norwegians are awesome man.

Do you have a specific example?

To be totally fair to the federal conservatives they have very little say in what happens to the oil. It's up to the provinces. The ones that fucked up with their oil were Alberta and Saskatchewan, two provinces which just so happen to be run by conservative parties. (Saskatchewan Party is conservative)

Yeah... because the right wing is the side disallowing the actual drilling for the oil...
Look at North Dakota. They're taking advantage of their oil and basically didn't have any downturn from the recession.

Yeah but North Dakota is doing well for a lot more reasons than just an oil boom. They have a growing tech industry, low unemployment, and lots of job opportunities growing due to the tech industry as well as the burgenoing service industry.
it's not really right to chalk it all up to one thing

Do you have any evidence of that? Literally everything I've read claims that the oil boom is responsible for, at minimum, the VAST majority of gains in GDP, average income, unemployment (3.5% at the end of 2011), etc.
As a side note: A large amount of the other things you mentioned are in response to the new oil industry and population gains from it.
What happens when the oil runs out though
thats kinda the point of us saving it though.
Does Norway have any economic model other than waiting for its oil to dry up or become obsolete?
You can have tons of oil and tons of poverty and debt too.
Oh yes you can, Russia's a pretty good example.

We're using the oil money to buy stock and properties, that's what the oil fund is for. We'll live off the rents it accumulates, unless a political decision is made to spend more in which case some time in the distant future the fund will run out and we'll find some other industry, so we'll become more like another Scandinavian country without oil.

Calling the Conservatives right-wing on a global scale is not very accurate.
If I had a time machine I'd go back in time and prevent Norway from being granted independence from us..
..och sen använt oljepengarna för att för att hämnas på allt danmark gjort mot oss~

They're pretty Right wing. Even going Republican at times.
