Level 2 health warnings issues as Britain is set for a heatwave (32c)

I heard you can make a pretty neat air conditioner with some dry ice.
Every British heatwave thread "omg scrubs cant handle heat" pls go.
Remember last time where people were getting banned for that? good times.
I'm American, so these kinda things are alien to me.
Is it uncommon to have air conditioning in your house in the UK? From what I've gathered from this thread, that seems to be the case.
British people always justify their overreaction by saying that their bodies are designed for low temperatures. But why do Chicagoans have no problem going from 0F in the winter to 95F in the summer?

Now for me it just sounds unusual that you can find a central airconditioner in modern US residential homes.
I wish the houses here would have standard AC because the temperatures tend to go past 30c here quite a lot in the summers.

At the very least, even the poorest of households have window AC units here.
Heh, my buddy has one. It basically just comes with a giant hose that you throw out of your window. Obviously it's not as efficient as it could be, but it does cool the room.
like this:

Yeah, that would work fine. As long as you're putting the heat outside it's fine, but those ones that just run in the middle of the room are only going to heat up your house.

Always?
Besides, they're used to going from 0 to 95; we're not used to getting these temperatures at all. Maybe we should be, given that they're becoming more frequent, but we aren't.
The way our houses are built is a far bigger issue than acclimation, anyway. That's something which has come up a lot in this thread.

We have them in offices and shops etc because we're obsessed with health and safety, but not houses
I just wish my car had air con, driving in the heat is awful. The windows fully down don't help as much as I'd like.

I don't know a single person who has AC in their house. It's just not worth the cost when you'd only use it for one week per year.
it's cheaper to just duct tape ice packs to your body
and it works surprisingly well

I never thought of it like that. I guess if your country is naturally cold, you wouldn't want AC.
There are places where it's cold as fuck in winter and hot as fuck in the summer.
I really like it.

Does it really matter? the fact is it's hot to them, it's not some measure of strength
It's that time of year again where we need to point out that not only is the majority of the UK not prepared for hot weather, but our homes are super insulated, we generally don't have AC, and our country averages over 80% humidity. I don't care how acclimatised to hot temperatures you think you are, when the air won't allow you to sweat effectively it's fucking HOT.
get on my level. I have two huge deskfans on each side of my bed blowing wind like 2 inches from my face. Pretty ok african homemade A/C if I do say so myself
A thing I always see is old people walking about in like full coats and jackets and shit. Seems like the ones that are really past it decide it's a good idea to go out in 30+ degree heat with winter clothing on.
Year after year you guys get heatwaves. You think by now you would've learned to put A/C in your houses.
Year after year you guys get heatwaves. You think by now you would've learned to put A/C in your houses.
Year after year you guys get your houses blown apart by tornadoes and hurricanes. You think by now you would've learned to not make fragile wooden houses that break apart easily.
I'm sorry but this "our bodies aren't designed for these temperatures" stuff is bullcrap.
Sure, you're not adjusted to the heat, but that doesn't mean your body's not designed for it. The genetic makeup isn't any different from other people just because it's usually cold in your region.
Actually your body does physically change depending on what temperatures you've been exposed to. People in colder climates have more capilaries for instance.

As someone who was in Kraków in May, your summers can suck a massive dick.
I have never sweat so much.
But why do Chicagoans have no problem going from 0F in the winter to 95F in the summer?
Summer in Chicago is mild at best. There's no humidity up here. Go spend a summer in southern Indiana/Kentucky. Their 80F 80%+ humidity will murder you.
You'll be laughing on the other side of your face if you have to experience a heat wave of your own. Or better, a cold snap. Everybody has differing levels of tolerance to extreme weather conditions, and what applies to one extreme sure as hell won't apply to another.
Heat is worse than cold. You can put more layers on, you can only take so many off
It's 88F and above for the rest of the week for me. The only reason it bugs me is because my PC runs a bit warmer than normal. After living in Florida for 10 years, I went back to Tennessee and it got down to about 50F I was like holy shit I'm fucking freezing. And when I lived in Tennessee I walked 3 miles home from school in knee deep snow with a short sleeved shirt on, soaked and wet, and it didn't even bother me. Though heat never really bugged me. I barely broke a sweat wearing BDUs at a Kentucky army base when it was hitting 100F outside
So I can see how people get accustomed
And apparently you've also never heard of the fact that air conditioners these days are pretty expensive even on instalments, not to mention that they can sometimes be troublesome to install in older homes. Also most of these older homes may not have the right insulation/build for summer or winter or both. This was pointless and insensitive in the extreme.
I install air conditioners for a living, and there's a hell of a lot of truth in this. Hell, sometimes it's hard as fuck to install them in NEW homes.

That's how it is in New Mexico, plus 30-70MPH winds in the spring. It's the worst in the winter though, 40MPH winds while it's 15F outside is no fun at all.

I've sometimes wondered if a heat-pump would be a better option, though I assume Britain has more efficient heating than all-electric in most homes.
With a heat-pump, you get one device that provides you with decent heat in the winter for cheaper than pure electric resistance heat, and then for those times that you need it, it becomes an air conditioner.
In terms of installation, you can also buy what are called "mini-splits", which are like a weird bastard mix between a window unit and a full-fledged split system. Installation is easy (drill hole through wall, mount evaporator/blower assembly to wall, pull copper/drain hose through), connect out-door unit, and bam, you're done. They're fairly cheap, too, or at least they are here. Only disadvantage is you lose a fair bit of wall space and they're typically only meant for a single room.

Though when I say "cheap", I mean the units themselves tend to be cheap, paying someone to install them is another thing. Unless you know a guy with a refrigeration license and who has the proper tools, then prepare to be ass-raped by labor costs.
Meanwhile in Oklahoma, which is usually having a heat stroke crisis due to failing ACs around this time of year, is 63F (17C) and raining nonstop. I absolutely love it.

Accurate chart
I'm from Ipswich where it can get up to like borderline 50 degrees and this is too fucking accurate
-useless post-
North Dakota. -60F to 120F.
Winter jacket is thin enough to wear comfortably in summer.
But now I live in Oklahoma, so it's funny watching the locals here adjust to "cold" weather.
To add on to my post, right now it is

tbh I don't mind winter but it can get so fucking cold, like I struggle at 0 degrees to do anything but be in bed, putting your hands out of the blanket is like dipping your hands in fucking ice cold water, unpleasant
