I'm not on the International Stigma Committee, sorry, I don't get to decide what should be stigmatized or not, I'm just telling you that it's a common stigma and ignoring the fact isn't healthy for you.
You are, however, using his post as an excuse to shoehorn just how unforgivably tolerating and open you are about hobbies, and it really bothers me when people do that because you're probably not even aware just how obliquely self-righteous, and dishonest, you sound.
This is the first time I've heard of your stigma and I've been detecting for 2 years. I've made more new contacts and friends through this hobby than from anything else I've done before, it's an extremely social hobby. I've even had a 80 year old grandpa come talk and ask where he can buy a detector, which he then ordered in front of me via his laptop. Two of my friends also bought detectors because of my finds and nowadays go outside regularly finding cool shit from the 1600s. Not to mention the local museum which has a couple of my finds on display.
But let's laugh at "them" for wearing socks and sandals and because "they" look "hilarious", ha ha.

The types on FP who seem to hate people for engaging in activity they find "autistic" like watching anime, playing pokemon: go etc. are taking it out on people because they are very insecure and try too hard to reach some artificial standard that doesn't exist an call anyone who doesn't have at least 10 non-online friends or who has 1 pair of cargo shorts a pathetic virgin who will die alone.

It's making me wonder if dropping several grand on a decent metal detector is a good idea.
tbh metal detectors seem more like a thing to buy out of passion than to gamble
You can still find lots of other stuff.
My grandfather goes metal detecting almost religiously, just about every other week if not every other day. He often finds a lot of coins and jewelry. At least once or twice a year he'll find a ring or two worth up to a grand or more.
People bring the most expensive shit to beaches and parks and lose them without notice.
[editline]25th August 2016[/editline]
It's not enough to make a living off of but it's certainly a worth-while hobby if you have a lot of free time.
I'm sorry, Scorpious, but according to Doctor Marbalo and Nurse thejjokerr's research, your grandfather may be autistic.
I want to go metal detecting in Europe some day. I have bought a few metal detecting finds from eBay, there's so much interesting stuff buried just under the surface.
tbh metal detectors seem more like a thing to buy out of passion than to gamble
An interest in history, treasure, adventure, and discovery is important. There's an element of gambling to it though, you never know what's under the detector. You can dig a thousand bottlecaps but then the 1001st beepityboop happens to be a silver coin from the middle ages and that moment is quite a rush.

Even if he is autistic simply because of this hobby, it's still netted him a good $15,000 over the past decade.
I'd go in for metal detection myself, if I didn't know already I'd really only find bottlecaps and rusty metal tools and the like.
I'm amazed at the shit people will say about other peoples hobbies
it makes me wonder what kind of freakish hobbies you people have lmao
I'm not saying you should not pursue your hobby, I never said that. I'm merely stating what is in my experience the common consensus on metal detectors at the beach. These people 9/10 times wear socks in their sandals and just look plain hilarious.
If you disagree or have other experiences that's great but I am just gonna post what I've seen and heard.
Also if there's a potential thousand dollar reward in it you shouldn't be too upset about my posts or people looking at you and can just ignore them freely.
If you communicated to 'those people' instead of socially isolating yourself maybe you would realize that they're actually fairly normal people

That's one fat nuggie.

We are the only one with a metal detector in my town, and people now and then come to borrow it cause they lost their phone / keys / rings in the snow :v: (somehow with 100% success rate)
Hadn't had much luck with it otherwise. We have it because my mom is a former archeologist who's helped uncover some stuff that defines the way we look at vikings today, and she wants us to share her enthusiasm in finding things.

No one was denying any stigmas, what point are you even trying to make?

Hey man, my hobby is basically growing and pruning underwater plants. Call me autistic, it may be tedious, but the end product is beautiful and rewarding.

Anyone that has a hobby that they don't like will call you autistic, if anything, it makes you people more interesting.
Being that guy who goes to public areas going for gold is gonna get shit flown in your face. I mean you're gonna go to the beach to catch waves or get a tan, and this dude is just walking around with a mine sweeper. Then you realize you got a chance to go for 4kg gold and suddenly being the metal detector guy finally pays off.
Thanks for clearing it up, sorry for my creative/brute use of language, I'm kinda used to having people around me who don't care about such minor things. Then again though I come from a country where we amplify our sentences with diseases so I guess it's just cultural differences.
Sorry guys didn't mean to offend anyone.
I would definitely be a bit more careful of your use of the word autism in the future on this forum, as quite a few people here genuinely exist somewhere on the spectrum.

i will never understand why people give a shit about other people doing their own thing.

You're welcome <3
i will never understand why people give a shit about other people doing their own thing.
If my time in OC is anything, people on the beach will rag you on anything. "Look at that guy eating ice cream while holding his quarters making an ass of himself." (A chick passing by calling me an ass for holding ice cream and my fucking quarters for the arcade.) At this point, its best to just say "fuck it" and do whatever it is you want because people will make snide remarks at anything for attention.
I would definitely be a bit more careful of your use of the word autism in the future on this forum, as quite a few people here genuinely exist somewhere on the spectrum.
I just find it silly to use as an insult, and grammatically is really bad. I mean it doesn't make sense, as its not like calling anyone retarded where that will get you fights and shit. I'm not even sure if I am autistic. 2 doctors said I am autistic, but then more doctors said I am not, so why really give a damn about it?
just ignore them, they're the ones with impaired social skills lmao
Imagine hating the world so much and being so insecure with yourself that you refuse to participate in fun, harmless, interesting (and in this guy's case, profitable) hobbies lol.
Man, I've found so much stuff with my detector. An old hotwheel, some really old bullets and coins (which I returned to the park service for historic archival) and all kinds of garbage that was just fun to find in general. I even lost a lot of weight to these walks.
Too bad it's made me autistic.
