I miss video game magazines. Nintendo Power never had to deal with any of this shit.
I have most issues from like 2007 to their end, I was flipping through a bunch of them recently. I really miss NP :/
I have most issues from like 2007 to their end, I was flipping through a bunch of them recently. I really miss NP :/
My oldest issue dates back to April 2003. I was young enough to believe that the fake contest prizes given out were real.
what disgusts me about all this is that the #gamergate movement on 4chan and here and many other major places have been going to a lot of lengths to try to drop all association with zoe and focus on different issues, actively calling out and reporting people who want to harass her or make the issue about her and telling them to shut up and fuck off, and she responds by personally writing an article about how the entire issue revolves around her and posting it to a popular website. for someone who claims to be sick of the harassment and attention, she sure is going out of her fucking way to draw a lot of attention to herself instead of letting things blow over.
Maybe she's a deliberate red herring? Gamersgate has to have some cunning, major players involved.
I want an archive of this whole mailing list. The whole history, as far back as any of it goes. I want to see if certain other events in the past have been as colluded on as I thought. Crack this bitch open, I want a read.
what are your theories
Well, I would say the Sarkesseian blow up for one (when she first launched her Kickstarter).
I miss video game magazines. Nintendo Power never had to deal with any of this shit.
To be fair, if we're talking about ethics Nintendo Power was literally the mouthpiece of Nintendo of America in magazine form. Though I suppose disclosure is key and it's not like it wasn't obvious. [sp]I loved the fuck out of Nintendo Power as well though.[/sp]
Thing about magazines is it was always a conscious effort to buy one, magazine writers have to appeal to the people who buy them fairly significantly. But now we have websites where even the most inflammatory clickbait will get people to view it and increase ad revenue.
Maybe it's time to bring back subscription models? Get rid of the ads and put websites behind a monthly subscription so the writers have to put in the effort to keep people wanting to subscribe.
When does this go away? I mean, when does all the bitching end?
Hopefully never. If these people are going to continue being employed, I want them to be publicly shamed regularly. This is despicable behavior and then the prick involved actually brushes off the whole journalistic issue because "it's involving his personal life". [editline]18th September 2014[/editline]
Maybe it's time to bring back subscription models? Get rid of the ads and put websites behind a monthly subscription so the writers have to put in the effort to keep people wanting to subscribe.
The ads aren't the problem. There's enough third parties wanting in on video game site advertising to avoid having World of Warcraft advertisements on Kotaku ever again.
But with no ads, the site doesn't get revenue per article view.
Obviously he's not very fucking ethical if he's intentionally avoiding an issue that has been discussed on end for the past month and trended on twitter for several days on end because it would be "rewarding" the people involved in the discussion. Fuck you Kyle Orland.

Ok I guess I'm a little confused. How is a private mailing list unethical? I'm certain that other professionals in different fields have private correspondence, possibly even including google groups and mailing lists! Is the big thing that somebody leaked their private conversations? That it's proof that journalists were conspiring to say things? I'm not trying to be facetious, this whole fucking thing is just a bit hard for me to figure out is all.

Basically, this group allowed the biggest players in games journalism to decide what people were allowed to see and direct them to think in whatever way they saw fit. And these are all ostensibly competing entities.

Outside of facepunch, 4chan and a few other sites, it seems like this whole thing is a non-issue. Or is that part of the conspiracy too? To downplay everything to make it go away? [editline]17th September 2014[/editline] Actually, no this exactly answers one question I had in a different thread:
Mainly, all at once a bunch of websites and blogs posted about the "death of gamers." I'm confused because it seems like an orchestrated campaign, but who has the influence to make these independent sites all post the same editorial? Also what does it accomplish for this party to proclaim gamers as dead?
So All these people posted about the death of gamers and they decided together to do it through this group! But for what purpose??? Every answer just begets more questions, it seems.

But more its just been sweeping generalizations designed to make everyone protesting against the corrupt in games journalists as being white, misogynist, neckbeard men. A submovement even popped up specifically to disprove these claims, though they just get called internalized misogynists/racists and told that they aren't smart for not agreeing with the indie devs and journalists. Probably one of the funniest I recall is someone getting told to prove they're really a black guy, so he posts a picture of himself. Then whoever it was that asked him photoshops his picture and tries to make it look like he faked it, so he posts a new one just to double down on it. If they tell people that "gamers" are a dead identity, then it allows anyone them to easily attack anyone still identifying with it while also letting them create a new one in the image that they want. Then they can easily include or exclude people from it as they see fit to help keep a solid base.
Ok but who is saying these things? Are they twitter posts or gawker and buzzfeed editorials or what?
All of the above. [editline]18th September 2014[/editline] You should give the GD thread a glance over, and there are plenty of others there who will answer questions. Just tell them you're looking to better understand the situation, they'll be more than happy to fill you in as best they can. http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1421478

Outside of facepunch, 4chan and a few other sites, it seems like this whole thing is a non-issue.
Journalists are supposed to have this strange and mythic quality known as integrity. The issue is that the people involved have none. They make a lot of money and have influence over hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, and they conspire while acting regarding others they're close to in what is a clear conflict of interests.
Ok thanks for replying. This whole thing is bonkers! One last thing: It seems like almost all of this has been happening on platforms like youtube, imageboards and forums. I think that if individuals want to fight the status quo, they should embrace more established means in order to reach a real audience. I realize that, against an established cartel (because by all appearances, that is exactly what this is), this may be an uphill battle. It seems though that there are some sympathetic individuals and organizations (the escapist, maybe?) that you can use to help further the cause. As it stands, this thing seems very amorphous and ambiguous from an outside perspective. I think a voice with authority could help. [editline]17th September 2014[/editline]
They make a lot of money and have influence over hundreds of thousands if not millions of people
OK I don't actually think the first thing is true at all and your second claim sounds pretty incredible.
I got banned on /v/ for posting about this. "Ban Evasion" Funny, this is my very first ban. Could it have anything to do with not being able to appeal this specific kind of ban for three fucking days?
4chan's pretty fucked up. Mods delete ANYTHING that has to do with #GG. Hell, I've seen Vivian James threads pruned. Problem is, moot is nowhere to be found. IRC is set to +m. Every way to contact someone is denied some way or another. This whole thing is bullshit. It's been WAY overblown for what it actually was since the very beginning but it seems to get bigger and bigger and censored harder and harder. I'm really starting to believe the "HOW DEEP DOES THE RABBIT HOLE GO" people keep spouting around and about.
These people, they're like ghosts. Always in the shadows, always hiding behind lies and proxy journalists.
"The finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist."
As for 4chan it's funny that GG threads get locked, but the janitors and mods will turn a blind eye to waifu threads (which is against the rules), console war bullshit (also against the rules), east vs west threads, bait/contrarian threads ("convince me why X isn't shit"), etc. /v/ has been shit for years but if you looked hard enough you could find a few good threads at least once a day. In protest or fear I think the ones that support #GG will move to one of the other chans.
I wish people would stop giving enough of a shit about gaming journalism to actually ignore it
If that's your philosophy, why are you commenting on gaming journalism?
This is like a pile of shit that just can't stop growing.
snip, misinformation
Could someone please explain just what this Gamersgate thing is and what Zoe Quinn did?
Could someone please explain just what this Gamersgate thing is and what Zoe Quinn did?
Zoe didn't really do much other than bring to light the fact that a lot of journos and indie devs were in bed with each other, literally and figuratively. This late in it though a lot of people are trying to move the focus away from her since she's relatively unimportant albeit the butt of many jokes. The basic idea is that after the Zoe thing came to light, these journos turned on their readers and everyone was sick of it. It's everything snowballing from the horrible clickbait, agenda driven bullshit, and general QUALITY JOURNALISM that they have pushed out for years combined and everyone's trying to discredit bad sites while spreading word about good ones. Not to mention the corruption of many of these journos literally paying each other and having connections that are both too personal and among supposed competitors.
