But what does this have to do with Zoe Quinn or whatever? I just don't get it.
all of these games journo sites are trying to bring it back to talking about and making articles about zoe quinn to get the heat off of themselves. its easier to paint the narrative of evil mysoginist nerds.
But what does this have to do with Zoe Quinn or whatever? I just don't get it.
What you need to realise is that after the first few days, Zoe Quinn was entirely irrelevant. She fucked a bunch of guys who then gave her shitty game 10/10 wow so amazing reviews. It was the catalyst that started people looking into game 'journalists', and now all this shit has come out. All the sites involved are trying to bring her back into this so they can scream muhsojiny and try to discredit it.
But what does this have to do with Zoe Quinn or whatever? I just don't get it.
Zoe was the spark that set the forest on fire, she's of little importance now.
it turns out all those bloggers who posted articles proclaiming GAMERS ARE DEAD were actually conspiring together, what a shock! and now people have proof
There's nothing that connects this group with the bloggers who posted "gamers are dead" articles.
This is the dumbest load of shit I've heard of in weeks. Who the fuck are these people? why are they important?
This is the dumbest load of shit I've heard of in weeks. Who the fuck are these people? why are they important?
Maybe try reading because this whole thread is filled with the information you are looking for. Also this question gets asked on every few pages in these threads.
I don't read about games anymore because of this shit. If I don't read about a game anywhere on facepunch or hear about it by word of mouth, then I probably don't know about it. It kind of sucks, but every page view they get they generate revenue and further legitimize their business of churning out drivel that they have the gall to call journalism.
they're taking over 4chan now, too, with both fake posers (seriously, there's a ton of new posters in every sjw themed thread who speak in very bizzare ways for 4chan), moderation out the ass on threads that aren't breaking any rules whatsoever, as well as one of Zoe's friends becoming a mod.
I am thoroughly confused with this entire situation, can someone give me a brief on what's happening?
I'm in the same boat, this whole thing had me thinking 'wtf' since I didn't follow it from day one. Here's what I've pieced together: A relatively unknown game developer, Zoe Quinn, was personally involved with a gaming 'journalist'. How much of a journalist is up for debate. Some perceived this as evidence of game developers colluding with game journalists to control what is reported to gamers, an obvious conflict of interest. No evidence of Zoe Quinn benefiting in any way has been presented though, as far as I've seen. There's been an enormous amount of hate directed at her, enough that even someone like me eventually read about it. Why? Well, she is female and we know male gamers have problems with women. Is that why? Maybe not but when people toss around derogatory terms that don't apply to men it seems obvious. Meanwhile, it turns out some gaming journalists had a secret online forum. Is this proof of some kind of conspiracy to control game reporting? Maybe not but the guy who created the forum posted this explanation on Ars Technica that includes bits like
Members are encouraged not to share internal material outside the group in order to create the safe environment needed for professional discussions among peers.
and
Far from colluding on some kind of coverage agenda, the 2,000+ threads and many thousands of posts in the group are more often heated arguments about issues like the correct way to handle the very kinds of ethical and coverage dilemmas that have been so in focus in recent weeks
Maybe it's just me but why do you need a 'safe' place? Safe from what? If you're an honest journalist isn't transparency a key element in what you do? Also talking about "the correct way to handle things" amongst yourselves IS collusion! So he's not helping his case. That's the tip of the iceberg I'm sure. But it's a start.

And then when numerous others in games journalism jumped to her defense and acted like psychotic bastards about it, people began asking questions. Which led to revelations about a lot of journalists having financial and personal ties to her and other indie devs, indie devs and journalists throwing around bigoted remarks and threats like halloween candy on a much worse level that their detractors, and a continuing unraveling as more came out about the problems like the IGF and Indiecade corruption, this mailing list, the "Gamers are dead" shit. Also, the association with Maya Felix Kramer, who is literally one of the single worst people around. After the first week Zoe Quinn became entirely irrelevant, and now she actively tries to force herself back in to the spotlight with things like writing a stupid cracked article, the constant irreverent actions she suddenly makes on Twitter,

Here is just a list of some American journalism organizations on wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_journalism_organizations
People had questions about Zoe Quinn and the journalists she was sleeping around with, but it was a lot about how terrible of a person she was to her ex-boyfriend and those around her in general that irritated people.
This is where my knowledge of what happened is limited. You say sleeping around with journalists, how many? I thought it was just the one guy. And how was she terrible to an ex-bf and those around her in general? That's the kind of thing that sounds so vague it's hard to take seriously. Details man, I need details!

And she manipulated her ex, raped him according to her very own definition of the word, treated him like shit in various forms from belittling and emotional abuse and vague threats to things like threatening to kill herself if any of it got out to keep him quiet. Again though, at this point she is irrelevant. She was the spark that set the fire, but now that its burning the town down, that spark doesn't even matter any more really.

Details man, I need details!
If you haven't even LOOKED at the original Zoe post, can you not try and inform people? You'll just be wasting their time and misinforming people. She slept with 5 guys. She defined rape I her own words including "sex with someone after they've had sex with someone else" when one party is unaware of those actions, she calls that rape. She has in her own words, raped her ex boyfriend. And she barely has any relevance now.
That's why I made sure I pointed out I have limited info, and was sharing what I had with another person who had limited info. What I posted is therefore not intended to be definitive but a place to start. For instance, how am I supposed to know what the 'original Zoe post' is? There are so many posts on this topic everywhere that unless people in the know give a link then it's impossible for latecomers to figure out which one it is.
The wordpress blog called "the Zoe post"? You mean the document that kicked off the whole gamergate event? Just google "Wordpress Zoe post"

Edit: People of Facepunch, don't get dragged into this, stay away from this 'war', shits gotten too deep, it's brought nothing but harm to me and my people. Edit 2: There's been reports that two of those slides are fake, my guess is the one with the blue face on it and Listen and Believe. Edit 3: It's confirmed that Anita's 'Listen and Believe' slide is real.
Blue face is from the 1984 Apple ad.
Fitting isn't it.
I'm unsure of what to think of all this, considering that my level of control or effect on these events is slim to none.
Also, watch out. People are getting doxxed on the GG Side and losing their jobs and getting harassed just like at the start of the movement.
This is so fucked up, it's literal indoctrination, and unless something's done, it's gonna be how the future of the internet is. Forcing "feminist" ideals is just the beginning, I'm seeing a real powergrab from people who're standing behind minorities and, using that as a shield to defend against any counterargument to their ideals. They're also manufacturing an enemy from people they don't like (fake rape/death threats, fake twitters, fake hacks, etc), and basically getting the uninformed public to get everyone else to do their dirty work for them.

This charade has gotten quite deep quite fast. It's sickening to behold, this appealing to emotion and circlejerking twisted agendas to shift focus from the real issues. It stands to reason that everything surrounding the GamerGate movement, all the hollow periphery manipulating, has degenerated into one of the biggest, most rancid scandalous cesspits the internet will witness this year, if not decade. Absolute ethical bankruptcy. Also, make no mistake, the pressure is real, as is the aftermath. 4chan is legitimately dying as we speak. Perhaps "dying" is not the right word, but it sure as shit isn't the 4chan everyone used to know just a few months ago. That and the mass exodus to a certain couple of imageboards, whose user counts and traffic has skyrocketed by tens of thousands and counting whilst the global mods rush to upgrade the servers multiple times a week, paints a bizarre picture. 4chan itself likely won't go anywhere, and business will go on as usual in most cases, but it doesn't take a long-time lurker to realize the whole thing is off in a very strange way.
This is fucking hilarious. Freaking out about journalists sharing and discussing topics and ideas in private. Artists, musicians, filmmakers and developers all do the same thing, in their own ways. People working in an industry have a tendency to talk and share with other people within the same industry. Is this suddenly a huge taboo because this is all about writing and journalism? You can't expect to grow by doing something ENTIRELY on your own from start to finish, with zero external input. It's a continual collaboration with like-minded peers. This was a private mailing list, where people felt less pressured to censor and filter themselves, and could simply talk like people with common working interests. It could've been a private forum, a Skype group, or an IRC channel; Its purpose would be exactly the same.
