I too can insult people with mental illnesses. That doesn't help the discussion move forwards or provide any positive evidence for your claims. He was making a reasonable accusation that the US government will/has/is now issuing a subpoena to Facebook that they would adhere to without much/with no resistance.
How is this resolvable to something akin to paranoid delusions?
i'm not insulting anyone. my grandmother was schizophrenic, and I am telling you with personal experience in the matter that Assange is speaking in a matter very similar to the extremely paranoid matter that schizophrenics speak in.
What he says isn't the issue - sure, the feds can quite easily subpoena the "information" on facebook; but the implications of that data is completely overblown by Assange, and his calling it a "spy machine" is fucking ridiculous.
he's beginning to sound like a bloody conspiracy theorist
Well, tbf, there is a conspiracy against him.
the only information present on facebook that the feds don't already have on citizens is the very general associations we have with individuals, and to claim that this information is sensitive is silly.

also nice try on the personal attack there bud lmfao

he's effectively fearmongering now. His persecution by the world's governments is leading to him trying to gain sympathy from the populace by saying shit like this.

He's not gaining sympathy, he's making himself look bad. You don't insult the world's most important and popular website, and then hope people support you.
Well fuck, doesn't take a high school student to figure that one out Assange...
I think he's just mad because he fell for that Osama video thing.

Oh no, someone used rhetoric that a news outlet played up, they're obviously talking like a schizophrenic. Again you demonstrate your inability to read beyond the title of the article and some minor rhetoric that was nowhere near his main point and was played up by the media who reported it.
And yes, your anecdotal fucking experience lets you categorize all people with schizoid manifestations in one brush.
he does have a point
many people put a lot of information on FB and are really open about their life on it. it would be a good place to gather information about a person.
I honestly don't get why this is an issue. Do you honestly think you are important enough for the government to investigate?
How egocentric and paranoid would you have to be to consider this an actual issue?
Some people just can't grasp the fact that their lives aren't as interesting as they'd want them.
I like to think I'm a super agent sometimes. :(
Oh Julian you so crazy.
I still don't use FB.
It's true that it can be used for spying, but I've also found it to be a great way to talk to my friends and share shit. I'm not guilty of anything so I have nothing to worry about.
Actually, the majority of my Facebook information is false. I changed my last name a bit but my friends who actually know me can identify me, I haven't put where I live (besides for saying that I'm in the U.S.), and my interests and 'Likes' wouldn't even prove useful to anyone.

you think associations aren't something the government uses to go after people?
Terrible, terrible, terrible mentality stop that now
I really don't understand the people criticising him. "He sounds like a conspiracy terrorist", what kind of fucking argument is that. The thing he criticises about facebook is just that it's a giant database of millions of people, which the US of course could have access too.
Assange says it and he's a hero amongst men.
Anyone else says it they're an inbred conspiracy theorist.

The fact that he's only mentioning the US specifically makes it sound like he thinks the whole thing was developed by the US government for this specific purpose.
As far as i'm aware it's awfully popular in other countries, too.
I guess that I'm not paranoid for using an alias.
Facepunch is better than Facebook.
Also, the whole spying thing only matters if you have something to hide.
Meh cant get privacy for shit anymore. Sitting in my room or bathroom at night is private enough. :smug:
What he's saying is not that Facebook is some kind of (direct) supplier of data to the US govt. It's more that in any moment, the feds could come roaming into the Facebook offices and demand a copy of the database. And Facebook would hand it over.
I'm pretty sure any company would do that to avoid any problems.

Explain? I genuinely want to know. I really don't care if anyone knows the general stuff I like, my address, my friends, and other basic information about me. Doesn't feel like a big deal to me.

Why? I mean I know why but seriously, why must everyone be a paranoid nut? That gets us nowhere, hell if you get enough paranoid nuts they can band together and guess what we get out of it, *cough*Tea party*cough*
Knowledge is power and its better that everyone knows everything but realistically, it isn't possible. Some people REALLY just don't give a shit about what they're government is doing. Just like some people really don't care about math, history, working out, music. It comes down to what you're interests are and you saying that its a terrible ideology is retarded.
Part of the reason I don't use it is because I have lots of dissident views.
Sounds ridiculous until a Special Branch Community Contact Unit officer tries to add you and your friends on facebook for being part of an allegedly extremist, activist group.
The CIA is going to be requesting your information if you're having 50-gallon drums of fertilizer sent to your studio apartment, not because you have an animated .gif of a pot leaf as the background for your Myspace page.

"I have nothing to hide what should I worry about" opens you up to all sorts of bullshit.
If you have nothing to hide, why would you mind your internet data being constantly monitored, or someone breaking into your house without a warrant to snoop around for illegal activities, or putting a camera in every room of your house to make certain that you have nothing to hide?
I think its really stupid that people don't use Facebook because of a few privacy concerns.

Besides the fact its illegal and if you're not doing anything illegal just gives you fodder to go after them :v:
Saying "I have nothing to hide" doesn't open you up to have illegal activity against you, is a statement saying that if and when these illegal activities occur. You are confident in the fact you've done nothing wrong and then can therefor go after whoever did that.

Illegal things don't have to stay illegal.
Besides, having a "I don't have anything to hide" mentality can be easily exploited. If you're stopped by the police, they might ask you to search the vehicle when you are entirely within your rights to say no. Same goes for a house search. Most people don't realize this.

That's a lot different and not related, is this a slippery slope argument? If the government wants to look at my semi-private information that I make available on my Facebook, I do not care.
It's aggregate information, unless you are wanted by the FBI or something, but then if you are, they probably already know enough about you

That's a slippery slope argument and those don't work.
