There's also this: https://www.pokecheck.org/
Says they're planning to add Gen 6 support by the end of the month, it's basically an emulated GTS.

Oh oops :/
I must have used LAN on my 3DS, not online. Sorry about that
Welp, there goes the Wild World players that haven't moved to New Leaf yet
You couldn't send City Folk data to NL.
Hence New Leaf, I guess.
How can they do this? No more brawl with friends?
It's an old shitty way they did it which was dumb in the first place but I'm glad they dropped that with 3DS and WiiU.
Many fun memories playing AC:Wild world....
rip

They can't support last gen forever, and with current gen already a few years old for, I don't think it's inappropriate.
Not just that but the peer connection sucked ass. Everyone would be jittering all over the place, and there was no good system to play with friends.
And it took for freaking ever to actually connect to a single game; if you were lucky enough to even connect that is.

I agree, too, that they've had to host them for too long and it's been enough years to flip the switch.
But why can't you make the serverside software available on the internet, so that people can mount their own servers? You stop paying them, whoever wants it enough can mount their own one, no games' online parts die, everybody happy.

I can't say I've heard of that being too mainstream an option. If fact, I can't even cite an example of a developer doing that, specifically where when the developers close their servers down.
This includes the Wii shop and such right?
What happens to games I've bought off of it and don't have installed on my Wii?
Wii shop and dlc purchases are fine

According to this, you're fine.
DS online sucked anyway, no body wants to use WEP on their router just so they can play games.

You bastard I spent hours configuring my router just so I could get my DS online
Note that this was eons ago I didn't really know how routers worked so there was a lot of fiddling around and the router randomly doing weird shit
Honestly I just said "fuck this" and made my Wi-Fi unsecured and hoped none of my neighbors would use my internet that only had 2GB of bandwidth.
Also, I found out the real reason for this is that Nintendo's WFC is based on GameSpy's servers. As most of you've heard, those are going down, so Nintendo's WFC goes down with it.

If my internet only had 2gb I'd never leave it unsecured
RIP MarioKart DS and all you snaking bastards.
I actually managed to find an opponent online like 2 weeks ago.
The opponent didn't even know how to do regular drifting, I almost caught up on the final lap on one map.
I'm hearing things by the folks who are trying to save MK Wii that they've tested a server for purely online play and it works on that side of things.

I did. I actually went out and bought a wi-fi router so I could use the wii's internet browser when I got mine, before that our house didn't have wifi at all.

Kinda shows how old the DS is. Wireless B WEP only. WPA was still pretty new yet and quite a few AP's didn't even support it. But the DS online is pretty outdated and limited compared to modern implementations though. I played Mario Kart DS online a few times, but other than that, it was underwhelming.
The best was dropping museum seeds in front of people' town gate
hahaha fucking up random peoples towns that they've spent an untold amount of time putting together! so awesome
The best was dropping museum seeds in front of people' town gate
You're a terrible cunt if you do that.
Obligatory RIP to a service that I don't and never will use.
honestly no one is really gonna miss this except for maybe the pokemon exclusive stuff.
All the games like Mario Kart and such have 3DS sequels, but judging from the comments here it seems most people don't have a 3DS.

No 3DS sequel of Metroid Prime: Hunters, I'll be sad to see that go, even if the online was filled with hackers.
For all those who will miss mario kart wii, hackers have already made a working backup server so you can still play
albeit only if you get CTGP Revolution.

That message has been there for months.

I've seen a demo of normal Mario Kart Wii working with it, seems to be working quite well. I'm just hoping it will be up and running before the 20th.
-snip-
Gonna miss all the Wii games and DS. I loved playing Conduit 1 and 2 online.
As well as losing Pokecheck, and all the other Pokémon related things.
RIP MarioKart DS and all you snaking bastards.
I'm going to miss MKDS snaking wifi matches. I've had 4-way snaking matches so close that red shells were rendered useless (they'd fire forward and not lock on due to promixty with the other racers if close enough), and since item-dragging is disabled online, the races ended up neck-and-neck and fast-paced. Almost felt like an online F-Zero at times.
I got half a billion Bells through WFC. Memories.
