To me, the original Cold War started in the 1850s with the Great Game. It just had a couple breaks during the World Wars and then another after the transition from USSR to Russian Federation.
I agree, it feels more like an ongoing cold war then start of a new one.
Urgh. These hostilities feel so pointless. I wish Putin didn't act like this and would agree on friendlier relations. At least North Korea (it's government, specifically) seem to prefer keeping to themselves..
The history of the Russian nation is that it's either been controlled by a strongman of some description or it slides back and forth out of anarchy - mainly because the government is pretty weak and impotent unless somebody strong sits at the helm. Russia will be persistently lurch in and out of crisis and have these problems until it grants independence to some of the outer regions or decentralises power extensively. Killing Putin won't achieve anything.
I disagree. Russia's foreign interests would evaporate overnight. Gazprom is nothing without Putin
I disagree. Russia's foreign interests would evaporate overnight. Gazprom is nothing without Putin
The point is that it would slide into an anarchy only for it to be replaced by another strongman who will assume the role of putin. This will remain true as long as russia continues trying to retain vast territories it can barely control and shouldn't be in charge of anyways.
