The main problem with the governments in europe and america is that their peoples haven't put fear into them by arming themselves and getting rid of them, by bloody means or otherwise. They, the governments, are unafraid. In fact, we're conditioned to think that revolution is a crazy idea.
The truth is, money can only purchase so much. Some things, like the rule of democracy, can only be purchased with blood.
Then again, quite a few european peoples have lain down and let their governments either restrict access to, or even outright take their rifles, pistols, and even some primitive weapons like muzzleloaders or long knives. They aren't afraid of you anymore, and rightly so. You gonna depose them with sticks and stones?
Meanwhile, here in America, people have forgotten why we have our second amendment. It's not just a nice thing, "Oh hey cool you let me have guns, thanks." No. It doesn't say that we have the right to own arms (though it goes without saying,) we have the right to bear arms. As in, bear them against our government when they resort to despotism and totalitarianism, and give in to greed and corruption.
"When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -Unknown, though usually attributed to either Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, or Thomas Paine.
[SUB]Now, I know this may seem a little of a brash statement regarding the topic of this discussion, but I speak in regards to corruption of governments in general. Broadened the discussion, if you will.[/SUB]
You forget though that any attempt at a sizable armed revolution here in America would be squashed before it even happened. The cops are kitted out like the army nowadays thanks to the 'threat' of 'terrorism' (which is what an armed revolt would likely be classified as these days). The average 'big-city' precinct could easily outgun the majority of citizens (except maybe in Texas) by themselves.
The above assumes that the revolt even gets that far. Everything you do nowadays is scrutinized by all sorts of cameras and wiretapping and email snooping. If you made an attempt to convince like minded people to join your cause through email or something, an entity like the NSA who already snoops on pretty much every facet of communication in the world will pick this chatter up and put you on a list of threats to national security, which means you and all of your followers will be watched everywhere and the second you make a move, your door gets kicked in at 3 in the morning and you get thrown in Gitmo and made an example of.
In this country, we have the right to bear arms, but actually try and bear them and you get thrown in prison.
is this satire
It's hard to call it satire when it is entirely true. Here we have a blatant example of a governmental organization saying FUCK YOU to not only the Due Process of law but Democracy as a whole. "Don't like ACTA? Too fucking bad, I can't hear your legitimate complaints through the enormous mountains of money I've been paid by the MPAA, RIAA and the Kochs to stomp out free will in Europe."
Oh look, public corruption. We're turning into the United States :/
My feelings are hurt

It's a blatant example of one guy being stubborn and trying to force a law through, not like that's never happened before. This is why we have a parliament, so one overzealous moron can't fuck everyone over.

What the fuck are you talking about. Seriously. Why do so many witless Americans have this romanticized idea of a magic revolution that will correct everything? There is no government conspiracy to remove the people from their power. The government is the people. People that have become politically active. You can do it too. Do you know what the real problem is? It's not the government, it's the people. People are too lazy. You don't need a revolution, you just need people to become politically active. It isn't going to happen though, not because of some evil government indoctrination program, but because it's easier to sit on your ass at home complaining on the internet.
