It depends because the US goes through phases. Sometimes we just ignore airliners being shot down, but other times we've shelled the fuck out of countries because of it. In this case I'm guessing we'll ignore it. At most more sanctions.
We've got a democrat in office; we're not attacking the Ukraine.
Damn.... all those people.... :( This was on purpose, I am almost sure of it. You have to be a complete idiot to mistake a fighter aircraft for a huge 777. They don't fly the same speed, nor altitude and the bleep on the radar is much bigger for the 777 than if it was a fighter jet.
Even if it is a case of mistaken identity, it's still not an accident. Who ever was in charge of the SAM didn't give 2 shits about positive identification; all he cared about was that there was an aircraft coming from Ukraine airspace and he didn't want it there, military aircraft or not.
The point I'm making is that this isn't some crazy event that was unpredictable and horribly unlucky. It could easily have been prevented by using common sense and saying "Hey, planes have been accidentally shot down in warzones before, maybe we shouldn't chart flights through active warzones." Yet nobody did that.
If indeed the rebels shot it down, I think they just successfully murdered any chance of the international community letting their rebellion succeed.
It was flying above there because Ukraine isn't a "warzone" officially, it's an area with high terrorist activity, officially, because Russia haven't admitted their involvement.
Both sides will deny anything and blame each other, nothing will happen. There have been so many horrible things happening in that part of the world recently and nothing has been resolved and nobody has been officially blamed. Officially Russia isn't even part of this any more.
They'll be able to identify the missile from the debris, then they'll get a serial number and before long they'll find out who the Russian's originally sold it too; Ukraine or the Separatists?
How many of those have been shot down by state sponsored rebel fighters?
quite a few believe it or not.

When was the last time you shelled a country for shooting down an aircraft?

It won't necessarily be that simple since much of the Seperatist's kit was stolen from Ukraine.

The rebels have shot down AN-26's before, which are cargo planes. Not hard to believe they'd mistake a 777 for an AN-26 on radar.

Not sure about reliability, because, well...
Its twitter.

Unconfirmed reports say that the rebels have said they fired at an Antonov at around the same time as this incident, which even though it's size can be easily mistaken for a 777 than a simple fighter jet.
One Dutch traveling agency said to have 25 people booked on that flight. Several other agencies still have to confirm.
Holy fuck Strelkov you moron.
"I thought it was Ukrainian."

It doesn't have to be a small fighter to be an enemy aircraft, large aircraft are used in war too, like large bombers, reconnaissance, etc, type aircraft.

Maybe they THOUGHT they were firing at an Antonov. They are rebels after all, and I doubt many of them have any real military experience with SAMs. Still, this will fuck them up, shooting down a plane full of civilians is unacceptable.

I hope the plane was shot down. It's the lesser evil out of all the other options.

True, but that is why Positive Identification is used. You do not fire a missile unless you are 100% certain what the target is. It has to be double even triple checked.

They carefully chose the one spot where no bodies can be seen. Makes sense, really.
Jesus fuck, just had a tincy panic attack.
My mum is in the UK at the moment and I'm not exactly sure when she was flying home. I'm sure it's not for another week but last time she flew Malaysian Airlines from Glasgow to Amsterdam and them on to Kula Lumpar.
I'm going to assume she wasn't on the flight from the fact her phone is ringing meaning it hasn't fallen thirty thousand feet.
Just took a me a little while to realise it's unlikely as hell.
Part of me wishes that the EU would just roll in and crush the separatists but I know what will never happen

If you're at a plane crash you are suppose to expect giblets, or burnt giblets maybe.
