most people buying these aren't going to be crawling through the jungle so it won't be much of an issue, i suspect

It's a bit of an undeserved reputation, the A1 hammered out of most of its problems
They're definitely the cooler looking M16s but aren't the ones from Vietnam famous for being really shitty? Very unreliable?
Depends. As mentioned earlier in the thread, a lot of the weapon's reputation stems from early models being delivered without the chrome-lined components they were supposed to have on the specs, no cleaning kits, and shitty, out-of-spec ammo.
Later iterations came with those problems fixed, as well as the addition of a button that would let you advance a stuck bolt, known as a forward assist. The only issue with it that persists to this day is that it functions off of direct impingement, meaning gas is vented directly into the receiver to cycle the bolt, rather than using a piston. This means the weapon gets much dirtier much more quickly than its piston-driven contemporaries.
Cleaning it well and cleaning it often is the solution. If you have a properly made rifle, you can keep it functioning under most conditions. Just don't get sand into it. Sand is the bane of pretty much every firearm.
I'd be ordering a CAR15 right about now if I could own one. Maybe I should go to New Zealand.
It's still cheaper to build a retro AR-15 with original parts and a Nodak Spud Retro lower. I built my Colt 604 Airforce rifle for about $750 total and everything but the bolt, lower receiver and trigger group are original Colt 604 parts. It just took a long time to source all the parts.
Those CAR used by the LRRPs look so badass as fuck.
The taped-together magazines, the green duct tape on the hand guard and that red dot prototype.
How incredible. 40 years have passed (more or less) from the introduction of the AR 15 platform. And the US army still uses to this day. Guess the switch to 6.8spc or another platform is either too damn expensive logistically or is not worth it.
At risk of participating in a circlejerk, I'm going to say that .300 Blackout would be a better alternative, since it's already fully compatible with the AR15 platform.

how long is it? I've never held a gun apart from gas operated pistols, but that bad boy is one that I'd love to hold more than my own baby if I had one

Just a hair over a meter, if it's in-spec.

okay that's just about touching the... edge... nevermind
what a wonderful rifle
I love the way the handguards look on the older models.
Stuff like this makes me wish I was American.

Or well, just that our gun laws didn't suck.

I also love the Heat shield + M203 combo

I feel you, mate
Our guns laws are petty strict in some areas of America.
Democratic states have the most strict laws, like here in NJ where you need a 'justifiable need' to own one like your life being in immediate danger, but then you still need to wait a few days for a background check before you can get one.
Republican states are a lot more relaxed.

Basically the only AR15/M16 variant I ever liked, dat heat shield.
also is this colt's last dying grasp to pull money in after losing the US/CAN military contracts? (honest question.)
The difference is one has full auto/burst fire and the other can only use semi auto.
M16 for full auto/burst, AR15 for Civilians.
that's not necessarily correct. M16 is a military designation, while AR15 is the name of the whole platform. ie. all M16s (and M4s) are AR15s, but not all AR15s are M16s (or M4s)
it's also completely possible to have a select fire AR15 (colt 601 and colt 602, or any AR15 lower receiver with a select fire trigger group and a drop in auto sear) or a semi-auto military designated version (Colt 634) or something different all together but still based (if loosely) on the AR15 platform (Diemaco C7, M231 FPW, Norinco CQ, HK416, SOCIMI AR-831, LR-300, LWRC M6, KH-2002, PVAR, REC7, SG516, T91, the list goes on)
Sexy, but are they California legal? I'm doubtful sadly.

Too bad I can't buy one here...
Don't worry, you can get an M9 and go to the gun club nearly every weekend for a reason to have one at all, but don't worry before that, you need to know a person who already owns a firearm and is a responsible user who's willing to vouch for your credibility, and on top of that have that little gun inspected whenever it's asked also paying a nice tax and firearms license each year, Because owning a gun in Australia is totally worth it ;)
