My troop was actually pretty chill and it was a wonderful experience especially when I attained Eagle, in general my Scouting experience was phenomenal besides a couple of arrogant guys here and there.
A couple friends of mine came out of the closet after they attained their Eagle, and I was worried that they would loose their rank. Thankfully they didn't, however its a rather sad day when someone looses their Eagle rank by just being gay.
One of the reasons I didn't go for eagle despite being the rank right under it TBH was because I didn't feel like explaining in a 1-2 hour board of review where they basically interview your life that I'm gay and not religious. And lying about it would make me feel pretty un-eagle scout of me.

I feel you about the non-religious part, I glanced over that and just explained what my personal values/morals are instead of my religious views. I respect you as a scout, not just as an Eagle (Taking the time and effort are still respect enough)
Scout Troops in the UK let you slide with the Jedi/Pastafarian/Praise the Omnissiah religion statement without any problems, so a large chunk of the scouts aren't even that religious.
Boy scouts are full of shit.
Went for like a month, everyone was a total douchebag.
I went for a few years, eventually got to the highest "rank" in our age group because I was the only one in our group who didn't have some kind of mental disorder, it was like a special-needs camping school

In my troop, outside of the promise there was very little mention of religion.

Its entirely dependent on the people in the troop. I just got my Eagle award this Saturday and the people in it are the one of the few people I'll stay in regular contact. It also helps when you have a Scoutmaster that is pretty leniant.
I was a Seascout for a few years. The group was pretty chill on religion, it actually came up and the Skipper said he doesn't really care who's what. There were some hard core Catholics in there, but we got along because we never did talk about religion.
I stopped going because the shit I was being taught wasn't really that useful anymore. I also couldn't swim, and there was a good bit of swimming involved that I couldn't deal with.
Then there was this sexuality bullshit. Any time I heard about it, I was embarrassed to be apart of the BSA, so I wanted out before I aged out at 21. It's funny how my Catholic friend wanted out for the same occurrence, but with the total opposite opinion. When talking about getting out he mentioned gay scouts being admitted, silently, I resented him for that. I wanted to get out because they decided to draw the line at just gay scouts. That to me is an arbitrary compromise that didn't need to be made. It's almost as if they don't care, it's a game to them. Banning gay leaders, has nothing to do with morality when you're accepting gay scouts, and if you've been in you know how much they love to talk about morality and doing the right thing.
Sure I could have ignored it all, but I really did not want to associate with such a hypocritical organisation.

Then there is the fact that it felt like the wannabe navy. And I hate that sort of thing. I hate the millitary (not that the people in it are wrong or anything). But that's a different topic, and I don't want to start a shit storm.
I never made lasting friends from my troop and got left behind to rot in Life rank when everyone from my patrol just left to go do Venture scouting. Thanks for helping everyone get Eagle besides me because I didn't want to do any more shitty campouts than was required, assholes.
If I could've been in girlscouts, I would have, I've heard nothing but good from their side. :<
...I had fun in scouts...
Tell me about it, all I ever really did in it was play games and stuff. One time we were playing capture the flag with actual flags, and my team put our flag on top of a huge pile of horse shit.
Good times.
You can have scouting without religious bigotry. Canada does it just fine.
Hell, we also have the cadet program here, much better then scouts.
I was in the scouts for a few years and I guess it was fun but ultimately fucking worthless.
One time some kid almost drowned me in a swimming pool when we were learning to swim for some badge. No one did shit while the scared kid attempted to use me as a floatation device and I screamed for help. I had to elbow him in the face a few times to stop from being drowned, still scares me to this day.
Can we just abolish the BSA and let the Girl Scouts take over for all the kids?
We could just call them the Scouts.

That's basically what we have in Australia except Girl Guides are still a thing but otherwise Scouts are mixed genders.
Really? Everyone I knew was pretty much a weirdo
What state was that in? I was in one for a while in Pennsylvania and everyone was chill as fuck, even other troops when we went to whatever that bigass gathering jamboree thing is called
You can have scouting without religious bigotry. Canada does it just fine.
The issue isn't with scouting, it is with the Boy Scouts of America the organization. It is a front for the Mormon church. It isn't some big secret, people are just fucking stupid and continue to support those assholes.
EDIT: I mean the organization itself is comprised of assholes. Most scout troops and masters are perfectly nice people.

I had no idea it was a separate organisation until I looked up this (what seemed to be) strange comment.
Meanwhile the girl scouts welcome both gay and trans scout masters and members.

Oh and their cookies are the fucking bomb. What do boy scouts even do?

Shame they don't let in boys.

Popcorn. It sucks.
I never really had much problems in my troop. Yeah, there were some jerks and weirdos, but they usually didn't last long, either switching troops or quitting altogether.
